Daniell Cell: How Ions Move

中3 · 化学単元: イオンと電池(ダニエル電池)Daniell Cell: How Ions Move 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that in a Daniell cell zinc at the negative electrode dissolves to form Zn²⁺, its electrons travel through the wire and turn Cu²⁺ into copper at the positive copper plate, that electron flow (Zn→Cu) is opposite to the current direction (Cu→Zn), and that ions moving through the porous wall keep both solutions electrically neutral.

Predict (before you touch anything)

If the cell keeps supplying current, how do you think the zinc plate and the copper plate will each change?💡 亜鉛と銅では、どちらがイオンになりやすい金属でしょうか。Which metal forms ions more easily, zinc or copper?
Do you think the direction electrons flow in the wire is the same as the direction of the current shown by the ammeter?💡 電流の向きは、もともと「+の電気が流れる向き」として決められています。 Current direction was defined as the direction positive charge flows. Is the charge of an electron positive or negative?

Try it

In the starting state (Temperature 25 ℃, Zinc plate surface area 60 %), watch which plate the light-blue e⁻ particles on the wire leave and which they reach, and compare with the labels "Electrons e⁻: Zn→Cu" and "Current: Cu→Zn" and the red arrows at the top.
Watch near the porous wall (cellophane): see which side the gray Zn²⁺ (+) and the yellow SO₄²⁻ (−) each move toward. Also read the + and − totals under "Neutrality" in the panel.
Change "Temperature" to 0 ℃ and 60 ℃, and "Zinc plate surface area" to 20 % and 100 %. Compare the "Ammeter" reading (mA), the "Reaction rate" factor, and how fast the electrons move.
Leave it running at 60 ℃ and 100 % for about 40 seconds. Watch the "Zinc plate thickness (in liquid)" and "Copper plate growth" bars, the blue color on the copper side, and the ammeter. Press "Reset" when done.

Check

Which way did the electrons flow, and which way did the current flow?→ 電子は導線を亜鉛板から銅板へ(Zn→Cu)流れ、電流は導線では銅板から亜鉛板へ(Cu→Zn)と逆向きに流れる。 Electrons flowed through the wire from the zinc plate to the copper plate (Zn→Cu); the current in the wire flowed the opposite way, from copper to zinc (Cu→Zn). Inside the cell (in the solutions) the current goes from the zinc side to the copper side.
Through the porous wall, which way did Zn²⁺ and SO₄²⁻ each move? What did the "Neutrality" numbers show?→ Zn²⁺ は銅側(正極側)へ、SO₄²⁻ は亜鉛側(負極側)へ移動した。 Zn²⁺ moved to the copper (positive) side and SO₄²⁻ moved to the zinc (negative) side. On both sides the + and − totals were always equal (for example +14 / −14), so both solutions stayed electrically neutral.
How did the ammeter reading change when you changed the temperature or the zinc surface area?→ どちらも大きくするほど電流が大きくなった。 Raising either one increased the current. For example about 36 mA at 25 ℃ and 60 %, about 15 mA at 0 ℃, about 121 mA at 60 ℃, about 60 mA at 25 ℃ and 100 %, and about 202 mA at 60 ℃ and 100 %. The electrons also moved faster.
After the reaction ran for a long time, how had the zinc plate, the copper plate, and the solution color changed?→ 亜鉛板は溶けて薄くなり(約 52 % まで)、銅板は同じ分だけ銅が析出して太くなった(+48 %)。 The zinc plate dissolved and got thinner (down to about 52 %), and the copper plate grew thicker by the same amount (+48 %) as copper was deposited. The blue on the copper side faded as Cu²⁺ was used up, while the zinc side stayed colorless because Zn²⁺ is colorless. Finally the ammeter dropped to 0 mA and the reaction stopped.

Think further

If the porous wall (cellophane) let no ions through at all, what do you think would happen to the current?→ 亜鉛側には Zn²⁺ が増えて+に、銅側では Cu²⁺ が減って−にかたよるため、亜鉛から電子が出にくく、銅板が電子を受け取りにくくなり、電流はすぐに流れなくなる。 The zinc side would build up extra positive charge (more Zn²⁺) and the copper side extra negative charge (fewer Cu²⁺), so electrons could no longer easily leave the zinc or be accepted at the copper, and the current would quickly stop. Ion movement keeps the solutions neutral so the current can continue.
Why is the amount of zinc lost shown as equal to the amount of copper gained?→ Zn The 2 electrons released by one Zn atom are exactly what one Cu²⁺ needs to become one Cu atom, so the number of zinc atoms dissolved equals the number of copper atoms deposited. (Their masses are not equal, because the atoms have different masses.)

This model is simplified so that the reaction rate and current depend only on temperature (roughly doubling every 20 ℃) and zinc surface area; in a real cell the current also depends on the voltage and the circuit resistance. The particles are a representative sample, and Zn²⁺ is really colorless but is drawn gray so it can be seen. The reaction stopping when the immersed zinc reaches about 52 % is a setting of the model.
