How Standing Waves Form — Fixed-End Reflection and Superposition
Students understand that when a wave reflected upside down at a fixed end overlaps the incident wave, a standing wave forms whose nodes and antinodes do not move, that nodes are λ/2 apart, and that the string resonates strongly when its length satisfies L = n·λ/2.

Predict (before you touch anything)
If you add a wave moving right (incident) and a wave moving left after reflecting at the fixed end (reflected), do you think the resultant wave will travel right, travel left, or do something else?💡 壁に固定された点は動けません。 The point fixed to the wall cannot move. What must the sum of the two waves' displacements always be at that point?
If you slowly raise the frequency f without changing the string length, how do you think the size of the string's vibration will change?💡 両端で何度も反射した波どうしが、うまく山と山で重なる条件を考えてみましょう。Think about when waves that have bounced back and forth many times line up crest on crest.
Try it
In the starting state (① Driver frequency f = 2.00 Hz, ② String length L = 1.00 m, ③ amplitude A = 0.60 cm), watch the three graphs (① incident, ② reflected, ③ resultant) move together. Press "Pause" and step through time with "Step forward ▶" or the "Time bar t/T".
In graph ③, find the nodes (○) and antinodes (△) and the "λ/2 = 0.500 m" dimension line, and record "Node spacing λ/2" and "Nodes / antinodes" from the readouts.
Press "Play", then change "① Driver frequency f" from 2.00 → 2.50 → 3.00 Hz, and record the "Resonance check" message and the "Antinode amplitude 2A′".
Return f to 2.00 Hz, set "② String length to fixed end L" to 1.50 m, and see how the resonance check and the list of "Resonant f" values change.
Check
At the fixed end x = L, how were the displacements of the incident and reflected waves related?→ いつも大きさが等しく符号が反対(上下が反転、位相が π ずれる)で、和は 0。 They were always equal in size and opposite in sign (flipped, a phase shift of π), so their sum was 0. That is why the fixed end is always a node.
With f = 2.00 Hz and L = 1.00 m, what were the node spacing and the numbers of nodes and antinodes? Did the nodes of the resultant wave move over time?→ 波長 λ = v/f = 2.00/2.00 = 1.000 m で、節の間隔 λ/2 = 0.500 m。 The wavelength is λ = v/f = 2.00/2.00 = 1.000 m, so node spacing λ/2 = 0.500 m. There were 3 nodes and 2 antinodes (n = 2). The nodes and antinodes stayed in place; the string only vibrated up and down.
At f = 2.00, 2.50, and 3.00 Hz, what were the resonance check and the antinode amplitude 2A′?→ 2.00 Hz(n = 2)と 3.00 Hz(n = 3)は「共振 ◎」で 2A′ = 3.00 cm。 2.00 Hz (n = 2) and 3.00 Hz (n = 3) showed "Resonance ◎" with 2A′ = 3.00 cm. At 2.50 Hz, n = 2.50 gave "No resonance ✕" and 2A′ was only 0.75 cm.
When L was set to 1.50 m, how did the resonant frequencies change?→ f = n·v/(2L) より 0.67、1.33、2.00、2.67 Hz … From f = n·v/(2L) they became 0.67, 1.33, 2.00, 2.67 Hz, …, closer together. At f = 2.00 Hz, n = 3, so it still resonated, now with 4 nodes and 3 antinodes.
Think further
Both ends of this string are nodes (the driver end is treated as almost not moving). Nodes are λ/2 apart, so both ends can be nodes only when the length is a whole number of half wavelengths. Then the waves that travel back and forth many times are in phase and reinforce each other, giving a large amplitude.
If the right end were a free end instead of a fixed end, would it be a node or an antinode?→ 自由端では反射波の上下が反転しないので、端で入射波と反射波が同じ向きに重なり、腹になる(解説欄にもこの違いが書かれている。 At a free end the reflected wave is not flipped, so the two waves add in the same direction at the end, making it an antinode (the explanation panel notes this; the simulation itself only has a fixed end).
Common misconceptions
The idea that a standing wave travels left or right like an ordinary wave. In a standing wave the nodes and antinodes stay fixed, and it does not look like a wave moving in one direction.
The idea that a reflected wave comes back with the same shape. At a fixed end the displacement is flipped (phase shift of π) on reflection.

The wave speed is fixed at v = 2.00 m/s, and the animation runs at 1/5 real speed. The growth of amplitude at resonance uses a simple model in which 0.6 of the amplitude survives each round trip (gain G): G = 2.5 at resonance and about 0.63 farthest from it. Uncheck the G option to use the incident amplitude A as is and show plain superposition only.
