Steady Train and Frictionless Puck: Uniform Motion Seen by Two Observers
Predict (before you touch anything)
Inside a train moving steadily to the right at 3 m/s, a puck slides across the floor to the left at 1 m/s relative to the train. To a person standing on the platform, which way and how fast do you think the puck appears to move?💡 パックは電車と一緒に運ばれながら、電車の中でも動いています。 The puck is carried along by the train while also moving inside it. Try treating rightward as + and leftward as −.
Do you think a force is acting on the puck in its direction of motion while it keeps sliding on the frictionless floor?💡 力がはたらくと物体の速さや向きは変わります。 When a force acts, an object's speed or direction changes. Watch whether the puck's velocity changes along the way.
Try it
With the default settings ("Train speed vT" +3.0 m/s, "Puck speed vp" −1.0 m/s) and the "View from train" view, watch the puck's velocity arrow, the blue strobe dots on the floor (every 0.5 s), and the scenery flowing backward.
Press "View from platform", answer the "Prediction quiz" that appears, then press "Check with the animation". Press "Reset" and observe the puck's arrow, numbers and orange strobe dots in the platform view.
Compare the strobe record strip in the middle (the "Train" and "Platform" rows and their "gap" values) and the slopes of the two straight lines on the x-t graph at the bottom.
Set "Train speed vT" to +2.0 m/s and "Puck speed vp" to −2.0 m/s, and see how the puck and the train windows look in the platform view.
Switch back to "View from train" (answering the quiz). Change vp to +2.0 m/s and 0.0 m/s, and check the velocity readouts for the two observers and the dot gaps.
Check
With vT = +3.0 m/s and vp = −1.0 m/s, what is the puck's velocity seen from the platform? What were the strobe dot gaps for each observer?→ ホームから見ると vT + vp = 3.0 + (−1.0) = +2.0 m/s(右向き)。 From the platform it is vT + vp = 3.0 + (−1.0) = +2.0 m/s (to the right). The dot gap was 0.50 m inside the train and 1.00 m from the platform, and the dots were evenly spaced in both cases.
Did the puck's velocity change during the run in either view? How was the force on the puck shown?→ どちらの視点でも速度は一定で、ストロボ点は等間隔、x-t グラフは直線だった。 In both views the velocity stayed constant: the strobe dots were evenly spaced and the x-t graph lines were straight. The puck was always labeled "Net force = 0 (no force acts)".
With vT = +2.0 m/s and vp = −2.0 m/s, how did the puck look from the platform?→ ホームから見た速度は 0 m/s で、パックはその場に止まって見え、電車(窓)だけが右へ動いていった。 Its velocity from the platform was 0 m/s: the puck appeared to stay in place while only the train (its windows) moved to the right. The platform dot gap was 0 m and the platform line on the x-t graph was flat (slope 0). Seen inside the train, it moves left at −2.0 m/s.
What does the difference between the slopes of the two lines on the x-t graph represent?→ 電車の速さ vT。 The train speed vT. For example, with vT = +3.0 m/s and vp = −1.0 m/s the slopes are +2.0 and −1.0, and the difference is 3.0 m/s.
Think further
If you toss a ball straight up inside a train moving at constant speed, it comes back to your hand. Explain why, linking it to the vp = 0 case in this simulation.→ ボールは投げる前から電車と同じ速度で右へ動いており、水平方向には力を受けないので、慣性によってその速度を保ち続ける。 Before it is thrown, the ball already moves right with the train, and no horizontal force acts on it, so by inertia it keeps that velocity. Seen from inside the train it does not move horizontally (vp = 0), and seen from the platform it keeps moving with the train velocity vT, so it lands back in the hand.
Seen from the platform, the puck's velocity can be zero or even leftward. Why can we still say the puck moves in uniform linear motion for both observers?→ 速度の値は観測者によって違っても、どちらの観測者から見ても速度が時間とともに変わらない(点の間隔が一定、x-t グラフが直線)から。 Although the value of the velocity differs between observers, for each observer the velocity does not change over time (evenly spaced dots, straight x-t lines). Being at rest counts as uniform motion with zero velocity. The velocity stays constant because the net force on the puck is 0.
Common misconceptions
The idea that a moving object must have a force acting on it in its direction of motion. The puck keeps moving in uniform linear motion by inertia with zero net force.
The idea that an object has only one true speed. Velocity depends on the observer's frame: the same puck can look like it moves left from inside the train but moves right or stays still from the platform.

This is an ideal model: neither the train nor the puck accelerates, and friction and air resistance are exactly zero. When the puck nears the end of the car (or the edge of the screen) it fades out and restarts from the same spot; this is only a display effect, not a bounce or slowing down. Moving a slider restarts the run with the new settings. A prediction quiz appears each time a view button is pressed, so let groups discuss before answering. Relative velocity is covered in detail in high school in Japan, so at junior-high level focus on "speed and direction look different to different observers".
