How Clouds Form: Adiabatic Expansion and Dew Point

中2 · 地学単元: 雲のでき方(断熱膨張と露点)How Clouds Form: Adiabatic Expansion and Dew Point 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that when a parcel of air rises, the surrounding air pressure drops so it expands (adiabatic expansion) and cools, and that a cloud forms at the height where its temperature falls to the dew point (the condensation level), as water vapor turns into water droplets.

Predict (before you touch anything)

If air at the ground with a temperature of 20 ℃ and a dew point of 10 ℃ rises up a mountain slope, at about what height do you think a cloud starts to form? Will it form right at the ground?💡 雲ができるのは、空気の温度が露点まで下がったときです。 A cloud forms when the air's temperature has fallen to its dew point. As the air rises, which falls faster, the temperature or the dew point, and by how much?
If you raise the dew point at the ground (make the air more humid), do you think the cloud base will become higher or lower?💡 地上での気温と露点の差が、どう変わるかに注目しましょう。Pay attention to how the difference between the ground temperature and the ground dew point changes.

Try it

Press "Reset", keep "Ground temp." at 20 ℃ and "Ground dew pt." at 10 ℃, set "Rising speed" to 100 m/s, and press "Start rising". Watch the red temperature line and the blue dew point line on the graph, and the air parcel rising up the mountain on the right.
Press "Pause" at about 600 m and record "Altitude", "Temp.", "Dew point" and "Humidity" shown at the top. Press "Start rising" again, stop once more just after passing the cloud base (dashed line), and record the values.
Let the parcel rise to 8000 m and compare on the graph how the slope of the red temperature line changes below and above the condensation level.
Raise "Ground dew pt." to 14 ℃ and 18 ℃ and check how the "Cloud base" readout (m) and the dashed line on the graph and mountain move. Then try to push the dew point above 20 ℃ and confirm it cannot exceed the ground temperature.
Return "Ground dew pt." to 10 ℃, raise "Ground temp." to 30 ℃, and see how the cloud base changes.

Check

With a ground temperature of 20 ℃ and a ground dew point of 10 ℃, what was the cloud base (condensation level) in meters? Up to that height, by how many ℃ per 100 m did the temperature and the dew point each fall?→ 雲の下端は 1250 m。 The cloud base was at 1250 m. The temperature fell by about 1.0 ℃ per 100 m and the dew point by about 0.2 ℃ per 100 m (e.g. at about 600 m, temperature 14.0 ℃ and dew point 8.8 ℃). The gap shrinks by 0.8 ℃ every 100 m, and the two meet at 7.5 ℃ at 1250 m.
Above the condensation level, how did the rate of cooling and the humidity change?→ 気温は約 0.6 ℃/100 m とゆるやかに下がるようになり、気温と露点が等しいまま(湿度 100 %)上昇した。 The temperature started falling more slowly, at about 0.6 ℃ per 100 m, and the temperature and dew point stayed equal (humidity 100 %) as the parcel rose, reaching about −33 ℃ at 8000 m. A cloud formed above the parcel and grew.
When you raised the ground dew point from 10 ℃ to 14 ℃ to 18 ℃, what happened to the cloud base?→ 1250 m → 750 m → 250 m It dropped from 1250 m to 750 m to 250 m. The smaller the gap between ground temperature and dew point (the more humid the air), the less the air must rise to reach its dew point. At a dew point of 20 ℃ (equal to the temperature) it became 0 m, and the slider would not go higher.
Did any cloud appear below the condensation level? What happened to the cloud base when you raised the ground temperature to 30 ℃?→ 雲は凝結高度(破線)より下には一切できなかった。 No cloud appeared below the condensation level (dashed line). With a ground temperature of 30 ℃ and a dew point of 10 ℃, the gap became 20 ℃ and the cloud base rose to 2500 m.

Think further

Why does the temperature of a rising air parcel drop even though it does not lose heat to its surroundings?→ 上空ほど気圧が低いので、上昇した空気のかたまりは膨張する。 Air pressure is lower higher up, so the rising parcel expands. In expanding, the air does work pushing the surrounding air away and uses up energy, so its temperature falls even with no heat exchange (adiabatic expansion).
Why does the air cool more slowly once a cloud has formed? And why might cloud bases be low during the rainy season?→ 水蒸気が水滴に変わるときに熱(潜熱)を放出し、その熱が膨張による冷え方を一部打ち消すから。 When water vapor turns into droplets it releases heat (latent heat), which partly offsets the cooling from expansion. In the rainy season the air is humid, so the gap between ground temperature and dew point is small; the air reaches its dew point after rising only a little, so the cloud base is low.

The lapse rates are simplified to constant values of 1.0, 0.2 and 0.6 ℃ per 100 m (the real moist adiabatic lapse rate varies with temperature, roughly 0.4 to 0.9 ℃ per 100 m). "Rising speed" is just the animation speed for easy viewing; real updrafts are much slower. Dry and moist lapse rates are advanced for junior high in Japan, so keep it at "about 1 ℃ per 100 m until a cloud forms", and note that the humidity value is an approximation.
