Vein Valves and the Calf Muscle Pump

Vein Valves and the Calf Muscle Pump 目安 15分about 15 min
Students understand that blood in the leg veins returns to the heart against gravity because the calf muscles squeeze the veins (the muscle pump) and the valves in the veins prevent backflow.
Open the simulation

Predict (before you touch anything)

When the calf muscle contracts and squeezes the vein, which way do you think the blood inside will move: toward the heart or toward the foot?💡 チューブの真ん中をにぎったとき、中の水は両側に押し出されます。 If you squeeze the middle of a tube, the water inside is pushed out both ways. What does a vein have inside it?
If the muscles do not move at all (standing still), what do you think happens to the blood and the valves in the vein?💡 弁が開くのはどんな向きの圧力がかかったときか考えてみましょう。Think about which direction of pressure makes a valve open.

Try it

In the starting state ("Squeeze" 60, "Rhythm" 1.0 /s, "Leaky valve" 0 %), watch the muscle labels "Contract", "Relax" and "Rest", how Valves 1–3 open and close, and the "forward" arrows and "stop" marks. If it is too fast, lower "Rhythm" to 0.5 /s.
If the motion is hard to follow, press "Pause", read the status at the top left (e.g. "Contract: vein squeezed, blood to heart") and the valve states (V1–V3 open/shut), then press "Play" to continue.
Set "Squeeze" to 0, wait a few seconds, and check whether the valves or blood dots move. Then set it to 100 and watch how the "Blood at foot" value changes.
Set "Squeeze" back to 60, raise "Leaky valve" to 80 %, and watch for about 10 seconds. Look at the red "back" arrows, the width and color of the vein on the foot side, and the "Blood at foot" value.
Open "Explanation: vein valves and the muscle pump" at the bottom, read it, and compare it with what you observed (especially "About the colors").

Check

While the muscle is contracting, which way is the blood pushed, and what is Valve 1 on the foot side doing?→ 血液は心臓側へ押し出され、弁2(と弁3)が開いて「順流」の矢印が出た。 Blood is pushed toward the heart: Valve 2 (and Valve 3) open and "forward" arrows appear. Valve 1 on the foot side stays shut with a "stop" mark, so blood does not escape toward the foot.
While the muscle is relaxing, what happens to blood trying to fall back from the heart side, and to blood on the foot side?→ 心臓側から戻ろうとする血液は弁2で止められ(「止」の印)、足側からは弁1が開いて新しい血液が流れ込んだ。Blood falling back from the heart side is stopped at Valve 2 (the "stop" mark), while Valve 1 opens and new blood flows in from the foot side.
What happened when you set "Squeeze" to 0?→ 「静止:弁は閉じたまま・血流なし」と表示され、弁は閉じたまま開閉せず、血液の粒も止まった。The status showed "Still: valves shut, no blood flow"; the valves stayed shut without flapping and the blood dots stopped moving.
With "Leaky valve" at 80 %, what happened to the vein on the foot side and the "Blood at foot" value?→ 弛緩のたびに赤い「逆流」の矢印が出て血液が足側へ戻り、足側の静脈が太く膨らんで褐色がかった色になった。 Red "back" arrows appeared and blood leaked toward the foot; the foot-side vein swelled and turned a brownish color. "Blood at foot" rose to about ×1.6 with the message "pooling (vein swells)" (about ×0.9 at 0 %).

Think further

Why do legs tend to swell after standing or sitting still for a long time? Explain using this simulation.→ 筋肉が動かないと筋ポンプがはたらかず、弁は閉じたままで血液が心臓側へ押し上げられないため、足の静脈に血液がたまりやすくなる。 When the muscles do not move, the muscle pump does not work: the valves stay shut and blood is not pushed up toward the heart, so blood tends to collect in the leg veins. Walking or standing on tiptoe works the pump and helps blood return.
Arteries have almost no valves like these (apart from those at the heart's exits). Blood in arteries is driven by high pressure from the heart, but pressure in veins is low, and in the legs gravity pulls blood back down. Without valves, blood pushed up by the muscles would just fall back toward the foot, so one-way valves are needed.

This is a simplified model: one tilted vein with three valves and the muscle drawn as ellipses; values such as "Blood at foot" are relative indicators only. You can mention that backflow from leaky valves can lead to varicose veins, but the model should not be used for medical judgments. The explanation panel is collapsed on small screens, so have students open it.
