Magnetic Field Around a Straight Wire: Right-Hand Rule and Compasses

中2 · 物理単元: 電流と磁界(フレミング左手の法則、モーター)Magnetic Field Around a Straight Wire: Right-Hand Rule and Compasses 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that a straight current-carrying wire produces a circular magnetic field centered on the wire, that its direction follows the right-hand grip rule, that it is stronger for larger currents and weaker farther from the wire, and that a compass points along the combination of this field and Earth's magnetic field.

Predict (before you touch anything)

When the current flows toward you, out of the screen (◉), do you think the magnetic field goes clockwise or counterclockwise when seen from above?💡 右手の親指を電流の向きに向けて導線をにぎるまねをしてみましょう。Pretend to grip the wire with your right hand, with your thumb pointing in the direction of the current.
If the current is set to 0 A, which way do you think the compasses around the wire will point?💡 電流がないとき、方位磁針にはたらいている磁界は何でしょうか。When there is no current, what magnetic field is still acting on a compass?

Try it

In the starting state (Current I +3.0 A, Distance r 6.0 cm), look at the wire symbol (◉), the direction of the arrows moving along the field lines, and the four compasses, and read "Field direction at r" and "Compass (north point)" on the right.
Move the "Current I" slider to −3.0 A and see how the wire symbol, the direction the arrows circle, and the compasses change.
Set Current I to 0.0 A and check which way the compasses point.
  4. 電流 I を +5.0 A にし、「磁針の距離 r」を 3.0 cm → 6.0 cm → 12.0 cm と変えて、「磁界の強さ B = μ₀I/(2πr)」の値と、北側の方位磁針の傾きを記録する。 Set Current I to +5.0 A and change "Distance r" from 3.0 cm to 6.0 cm to 12.0 cm, recording the "Field strength B = μ₀I/(2πr)" value and the tilt of the north compass. At r = 3.0 cm, also look closely at the west (left) and east (right) compasses.

Check

With the current toward you (+3.0 A, ◉), which way did the field go seen from above? What about at −3.0 A?→ +3.0 A At +3.0 A it was counterclockwise, and the north compass tilted about 18° west of north. At −3.0 A the symbol became ⊗ (away from you), the field was clockwise, and the north compass tilted about 18° east of north: every direction reversed.
What did the compasses do when the current was 0 A?→ 4つとも北を向きました(地磁気だけの向き)。 All four pointed north (the direction of Earth's field alone). The field strength display read 0.0 μT.
With +5.0 A, how did the field strength change as r went from 3.0 cm to 6.0 cm to 12.0 cm?→ 約 33.3 μT → 16.7 μT → 8.3 μT と、距離が2倍になるごとに半分になりました(B は r に反比例)。 It went from about 33.3 μT to 16.7 μT to 8.3 μT, halving each time the distance doubled (B is inversely proportional to r). The north compass's tilt also shrank, from about 48° to 29° to 16°.
At +5.0 A and r = 3.0 cm, which way did the east and west compasses point?→ 東側は北を向いたままでしたが、西側は N 極が南を向きました。 The east compass still pointed north, but the west compass's N pole turned to point south. On the west side the wire's field (about 33 μT, pointing south) is stronger than Earth's field (about 30 μT, pointing north), so the combined field points south.

Think further

Why does a compass move only a little when the current is small or the compass is far from the wire? How could you make it swing more in an experiment?→ 方位磁針は電流の磁界と地磁気を合わせた向きを指すので、電流の磁界が地磁気より弱いと北からあまりずれません。 A compass points along the sum of the wire's field and Earth's field, so if the wire's field is weaker than Earth's, the needle stays close to north. You can make it swing more by increasing the current, moving the compass closer to the wire, or laying the wire north–south and placing the compass directly above or below it.

At junior high level it is enough to say the field is stronger for larger currents and closer to the wire; treat B = μ₀I/(2πr) and the μT values as enrichment. The model assumes a constant horizontal Earth's field of about 30 μT pointing north and a vertical wire seen from above, and it ignores the wire's finite length and any other wires.
