Sorted by Water Speed! River Grains - Sediment Sorting Cross-Section

River Grains - Sediment Sorting Cross-Section 目安 15分about 15 min
Students understand that faster water can carry bigger grains, so as the river slows toward the sea, gravel, sand and mud settle in that order (sorting), and that changes in water speed stack up layers of different grain size, forming stripes in the strata.

Predict (before you touch anything)

In a river flowing from the mountains to the sea, where do you think gravel, sand and mud each settle most: upstream or downstream?💡 流れが遅くなったとき、重くて大きい粒と軽くて小さい粒のどちらが先に運ばれなくなるでしょうか。When the water slows down, which can the flow no longer carry first: big, heavy grains or small, light ones?
If heavy rain suddenly makes the river flow faster, what do you think happens to grains that have already settled on the riverbed?💡 流れが速いほど、運べる粒の大きさはどう変わるでしょうか。How does the size of grains the water can carry change when the flow is faster?

Try it

In the starting state ("Normal": Upstream speed v0 = 2.40 m/s, Grain supply 60 grains/s), watch for about 10 seconds. Note where gravel (big brown), sand (yellow) and mud (small dark dots) settle on the riverbed, and read the "Sinking starts:" line at the top left.
Read the speed arrows near the water surface (the m/s values upstream, midstream and downstream) and confirm that the water is slower farther downstream.
Press "Flood" (v0 = 3.40 m/s, 150 grains/s). For about 10 seconds, watch what happens to the gravel and sand already lying upstream and which way the places where gravel and sand settle move.
Press "Calm" (v0 = 1.20 m/s, 40 grains/s). Watch where the coarse grains now stop and what kind of grains pile up on top of the existing layers.
Move the "Upstream speed v0" slider freely to build striped layers, and press "Reset" to start over.

Check

In "Normal", where did gravel, sand and mud settle?→ 礫はいちばん上流側(沈み始める位置 約 2〜23%)、砂は中流(約 38〜59%)、泥は下流側(約 78〜90%)に積もった。 Gravel settled farthest upstream (sinking starts at about 2-23%), sand in the middle (about 38-59%), and mud downstream (about 78-90%). There was no reversal such as gravel lying downstream of the mud.
How did the speed values on the arrows change from upstream to downstream?→ 「平常」では上流側 約 2.04 m/s、中流 約 0.66 m/s、下流側 約 0.21 m/s のように、下流ほど遅くなっていた。In "Normal" they went from about 2.04 m/s upstream to about 0.66 m/s midstream and about 0.21 m/s downstream, getting slower farther downstream.
What happened to the settled grains and the settling places when you pressed "Flood"?→ 上流端近くに積もっていた礫が巻き上げられて下流へ運ばれ(侵食)、礫が沈み始める位置は約 13〜34%、砂は約 48〜70% と下流側へ移った。 Gravel lying near the upstream end was picked up and carried downstream (erosion). The gravel settling zone moved downstream to about 13-34% and sand to about 48-70%. More mud was carried out to the sea (the "To sea" count rose).
How did the layers stack up when you pressed "Calm"?→ 礫は上流端のすぐ近くで止まるようになり、それまで礫がたまっていた所の上に砂が、砂がたまっていた所の上に泥が重なった。 Gravel now stopped right at the upstream end, sand began to pile on top of where gravel had been, and mud on top of where sand had been. New layers of different grain size were laid on top of the older ones, forming stripes.

Think further

On a cliff, the layers from bottom to top are mudstone → sandstone → conglomerate. How did the water flow at that spot (or its distance from the river mouth) probably change?→ 上の層ほど粒が大きいので、この場所の流れはだんだん速くなった(河口や上流に近くなった、浅くなった)と考えられる。 The grains get bigger toward the top, so the flow at that spot gradually became faster (the spot became closer to the river mouth or upstream, or shallower). This is like raising the speed in the simulation, which makes sand and gravel settle where mud used to settle.
If a mud layer lies directly on top of a gravel layer, what event could have happened between them?→ 流れが急に遅くなった(洪水が終わって静かになった、海面が上がって河口から遠くなった など)と考えられる。 The flow probably slowed down sharply (for example a flood ended, or the sea level rose so the spot ended up farther from the river mouth). In slow water gravel is no longer carried there, and only fine mud arrives and settles.

The model uses a single rule: a grain settles when the local speed falls below its critical speed vc = 0.8×√d and is picked up again when the speed exceeds it, with the speed decreasing smoothly from upstream to the sea. In real rivers, fine mud that has settled and stuck together is harder to pick up again (the Hjulström diagram), which this model does not include. Grain sizes are exaggerated on screen for visibility.
