Steer Before You Fall! Learn Bike Balance with the Handlebars
Students understand that a moving bike stays up because steering toward the side it is falling makes it turn, and the resulting centrifugal effect (v²/R) pushes the lean back; this restoring effect grows with the square of the speed and disappears when the bike is stopped.

Predict (before you touch anything)
When a bike starts to fall to the right, which way do you think you should turn the handlebars to bring it back up: right or left?💡 カーブを曲がるとき、体はカーブの外側と内側のどちらに押されるように感じるでしょうか。When you go around a curve, do you feel pushed toward the outside or the inside of the curve?
Do you think a stopped bike (speed 0) can stay up just by turning the handlebars?💡 画面の「v²/R」の式に v = 0 を入れるとどうなるか考えてみましょう。Think about what happens to the "v²/R" expression on the screen when v = 0.
Try it
In the starting state (Speed v = 5.0 m/s, Starting lean θ₀ = +5.0°, "Auto-steer" checked), watch the steering angle δ move by itself and θ return to about 0°.
Uncheck "Auto-steer", set "Steering angle δ (right +)" to +0.0°, and press "Reset". Watch θ grow until "Fell over!" appears, and watch the "Toppling g·sinθ" value in the HUD.
Keep v = 5.0 m/s, set δ to +10.0° (the same side as the lean, right) and press "Reset"; then set δ to −10.0° (the opposite side, left) and press "Reset". Compare how θ changes.
Set "Speed v" to 0.0 m/s, set δ to +20.0° or −20.0°, press "Reset", and check "v²/R" and "Restoring (v²/R)·cosθ" in the HUD.
With δ = +10.0°, compare the "v²/R" value at v = 5.0 m/s and 10.0 m/s. Finally check "Auto-steer" and press "Reset" at v = 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 3.0 m/s to see whether the bike stays up.
Check
With no steering (δ = 0°), what happened to the bike starting at θ₀ = +5°?→ 約0.5秒で θ が約12°になり、2秒以内に30°をこえて「転倒!」 θ reached about 12° in about 0.5 s and passed 30° within 2 s, showing "Fell over!". The more it leans, the larger g·sinθ becomes, so it falls faster and faster.
At v = 5.0 m/s, how did θ change with δ = +10° and with δ = −10°?→ +10°(倒れる向きに切る)では θ がすぐに減って起き上がった(0.3秒後に約−5°)。 At +10° (steering toward the lean), θ decreased right away and the bike rose up (about −5° after 0.3 s), but if the steering was held, it then fell over to the left. At −10° (the opposite way), θ grew quickly and the bike fell to the right within about 1 s.
At v = 0, what happened to "v²/R" and the lean when you steered?→ δ = ±20° で R = 2.75 m と表示されても v²/R は 0.00 m/s² のままで、復元側も 0 なので、どちらに切っても倒れ続けて転倒した。Even with δ = ±20° showing R = 2.75 m, v²/R stayed at 0.00 m/s² and the restoring term was 0, so the bike kept falling and fell over whichever way it was steered.
With δ = +10°, what happened to "v²/R" when v went from 5.0 to 10.0 m/s? And from what speed did auto-steer keep the bike up?→ 4.41 m/s² から 17.63 m/s² へ約4倍になった(速さの2乗に比例)。 It went from 4.41 m/s² to 17.63 m/s², about 4 times (proportional to the square of the speed). Auto-steer failed at v = 1.0 and 1.5 m/s even when it steered the maximum 30°, but at 2.0 m/s and above θ returned to 0°.
Think further
Why is a slow bike wobbly, while a bike going reasonably fast is steady?→ 傾きを戻す効果 v²/R は速さの2乗に比例するので、遅いと同じだけハンドルを切っても戻す力が小さく、倒そうとする重力の効果 g·sinθ に勝てない。 The restoring effect v²/R is proportional to the square of the speed, so when slow, the same steering gives only a small restoring effect that cannot beat gravity's toppling effect g·sinθ. In this model, auto-steer could only recover at about 2 m/s or faster.
Why did the bike fall to the other side when the steering was held toward the original lean? If the bike keeps turning after the lean is corrected, the centrifugal effect stays larger than gravity's effect and tips the bike to the other side. Riders keep adjusting the handlebars to match the lean, and "Auto-steer" imitates this by choosing δ from θ and how fast θ is changing.
Common misconceptions
Bikes stay up because of the gyroscopic effect of the wheels." This model has no gyroscopic effect at all, yet the bike can recover just by steering toward the lean. Steering into a turn does the main work.
If the bike starts to fall, steer the other way." Steering away from the lean adds the centrifugal effect to the fall, so the bike falls even faster.

The model is an inverted-pendulum approximation, θ̈=(g/h)sinθ−(v²/(hR))cosθ with 1/R=tanδ/L (h=L=1.0 m); it ignores gyroscopic effects, self-stabilization from the caster angle, and tire sliding. Explain that centrifugal force is an apparent force felt by the rider; seen from the ground, the ground pushing the tires toward the inside (centripetal force) does the job. Moving the δ slider by hand turns auto-steer off, so students can also try to keep the bike up by steering themselves as a game.
