Faraday Waves — Parametric Excitation Lab
Students understand that shaking a tank up and down makes the gravity felt by the water (the strength of the restoring force) change periodically, so the surface sloshing grows exponentially at f_d/2 = f₀ only when the drive frequency f_d is close to twice the natural frequency f₀ (parametric excitation), and that a drive amplitude above a threshold is needed to overcome damping.

Predict (before you touch anything)
You want to make the water slosh strongly in a tank whose surface has a natural frequency of 0.76 Hz by shaking the tank up and down. At what frequency should you shake it, and at what frequency do you think the surface will slosh?💡 ブランコの立ちこぎでは、1往復の間に何回しゃがんだり立ったりするでしょうか。When you pump a swing standing up, how many times do you squat and stand during one full back-and-forth swing?
If the damping of the water is made larger, do you think the sloshing will still grow with the same shaking?💡 揺れが育つかどうかは、1回の揺れで注ぎ込まれるエネルギーと失われるエネルギーのどちらが大きいかで決まります。Whether the sloshing grows depends on which is larger: the energy pumped in each cycle or the energy lost.

Set "Speed" to ×4, press "Set f_d = 2f₀" and then "Reset" (Drive amplitude h = 25.0 mm, Viscous damping γ = 0.050 s⁻¹). Record "State", "Envelope |A|", "Theory growth rate σ" and "Measured growth rate" in the Measurements panel, and the shape of the line in the log envelope graph.
Keep waiting and record "State" and "Envelope |A|" after the envelope has grown. In the time graph, compare the number of peaks of the orange line (platform z(t)) and the blue line (A(t)), and compare "Measured surface freq." with "f_d/2" and "f₀ (fixed)".
Press "+0.01f₀" 10 times to reach f_d = 2.100 f₀ and press "Reset"; then press it 10 more times to reach 2.200 f₀ and press "Reset". Compare "State" and the positions of the green band (growth range) and the orange marker.
Press "Set f_d = 2f₀" again, set "Viscous damping γ" to 0.300 s⁻¹ and press "Reset". Record "Threshold h_th" and "State", then raise "Drive amplitude h" to 35.0 mm, press "Reset" and compare.
Return "Viscous damping γ" to 0.050 s⁻¹, set "Drive amplitude h" to 3.0 mm, and confirm that the sloshing does not grow when the shaking is smaller than the threshold h_th = 4.5 mm.
Check
With f_d = 2f₀ (1.520 Hz), h = 25 mm and γ = 0.05 s⁻¹, how did the sloshing change?→ 「増幅中」となり、log 包絡グラフが直線的に上がった(指数的成長)。 It showed "Growing" and the log envelope graph rose in a straight line (exponential growth). The measured growth rate was about +0.22 s⁻¹, close to the theory value σ = +0.227 s⁻¹. Eventually growth stopped, the state became "Saturated (standing wave)", and the envelope |A| settled at about 4.2 cm.
At what frequency did the surface slosh, and how did that compare with the platform's shaking?→ 水面の実測周波数は 0.760 Hz で、f_d/2 = 0.760 Hz、f₀ = 0.760 Hz と一致した。 The measured surface frequency was 0.760 Hz, matching f_d/2 = 0.760 Hz and f₀ = 0.760 Hz. In the time graph, the orange platform goes up and down twice for every one blue surface oscillation, so the surface sloshes at half the drive frequency (a subharmonic).
What happened when f_d was shifted to 2.100 f₀ and 2.200 f₀?→ 2.100 f₀ ではまだ緑帯の中で「増幅中」だったが、しきい値 h_th は 20.5 mm に上がり成長率も約 +0.1 s⁻¹ に下がった。 At 2.100 f₀ it was still inside the green band and "Growing", but the threshold h_th rose to 20.5 mm and the growth rate fell to about +0.1 s⁻¹. At 2.200 f₀ it was outside the green band and "Decaying", so nothing grew. Growth happens only in a narrow range around 2f₀ (about 1.9 to 2.1 f₀ for h = 25 mm).
How did the threshold and the result change when the damping γ was set to 0.300 s⁻¹?→ しきい値 h_th は 4.5 mm から 27.0 mm に上がり(γ を6倍にすると6倍)、h = 25 mm では揺れが育たなかった。 The threshold h_th rose from 4.5 mm to 27.0 mm (six times larger γ gives six times larger threshold), so at h = 25 mm the sloshing did not grow. With h = 35 mm it exceeded the threshold and showed "Growing" again (growth rate about +0.08 s⁻¹).
Think further
Why does the surface slosh at half the frequency at which the platform is shaken?→ 台が上向きに加速すると水が感じる重力 g_eff は強くなり、下向きに加速すると弱くなる。 When the platform accelerates upward the water feels stronger gravity g_eff, and when it accelerates downward it feels weaker gravity. Making g_eff stronger while the surface is heaped up and weaker while it flattens pumps in energy every time. The surface heaps up twice in each full slosh (once on each side), so the gravity should rise and fall at twice the surface frequency, and the surface sloshes at f_d/2.
How is this parametric excitation different from ordinary resonance (forced oscillation by a periodic push)?→ 強制振動では駆動と同じ周波数で揺れ、揺れがはじめ0でも押せば揺れ始める。 In forced oscillation the system moves at the drive frequency and starts moving even from rest because it is pushed. Parametric excitation only changes the strength of the restoring force, so nothing happens without some initial motion, and a small motion grows in proportion to its size (exponential growth). It also has a threshold where the gain beats the damping, and the motion is at half the drive frequency.
Common misconceptions
To make it slosh strongly, shake at the same frequency as the surface's natural frequency." With vertical shaking (parametric excitation), strong growth happens when shaking at about twice the natural frequency, and the surface moves at half that frequency.
If the frequency is right, any shaking, however small, will make it grow." The drive amplitude must exceed a threshold (h_th = γg/ω₀³) that beats the damping loss, and that threshold is proportional to the damping γ.

The model computes only the lowest sloshing mode of a tank 1 m long with water 0.3 m deep, using the Mathieu equation A″+2γA′+ω₀²[1+ε·cos(ω_d t)]A=0, so it does not reproduce the fine grid-like surface patterns of real Faraday waves. Saturation comes from an assumed nonlinear damping γ_eff = γ(1+(A/1 cm)²), so the saturated amplitude itself depends on that assumption. When comparing runs, press "Reset" to bring the envelope back to 1 mm and use "Speed" ×4 to get results quickly.
