Inverted Pendulum and the Kapitza Effect
Students understand that an inverted pendulum, which normally always falls, can stay upright when its pivot is shaken up and down fast enough ((A·ω)² > 2gL), because the averaged restoring effect of the shaking beats gravity (the Kapitza effect), and that near the threshold it only stays up if the starting tilt is small.

Predict (before you touch anything)
If an upside-down pendulum (a weight on top of a rod) is tilted 10° and released with the pivot held still, what do you think happens? What if the pivot is shaken up and down by about 2 cm, 28 times per second?💡 支点を上下に振ると、棒には重力のほかに、支点の加速度による見かけの力が上下に入れかわりながらはたらきます。 When the pivot shakes, the rod feels, besides gravity, an apparent force from the pivot's acceleration that keeps flipping up and down. Does its effect really average out to zero?
If the frequency is kept the same and only the pivot amplitude A is halved, do you think it becomes easier or harder to keep the pendulum upright?💡 画面の (A·ω)² のバーは、A を半分にすると何倍になるでしょうか。If A is halved, by what factor does the (A·ω)² bar on the screen change?
Try it
Press the "A=0" button (Start tilt θ0 = 10°) and watch what the pendulum does when the pivot does not move. Read the "Status" line and the "Why" text at the upper right.
Press the "20mm·28Hz" button and watch the shaker move the pivot up and down and what the pendulum does after a few seconds. Record the θ value at the upper left, the small θ(t) graph, and the lengths of the (A·ω)² and 2gL bars.
Press the "10mm·28Hz" button and compare the result and the (A·ω)² value with half the amplitude against the "20mm·28Hz" case.
Set "Pivot amplitude A" to 14 mm and "Frequency f" to 28.0 Hz, set "Start tilt θ0" to 10° and watch the result. Then set "Start tilt θ0" to 20°, compare the results, and compare them with the displayed "max recoverable angle θc".
Keep "Pivot amplitude A" at 20 mm, lower "Frequency f" to 15.0 Hz, and press "Reset" to see the result (after changing A or f, press "Reset" to start over).
Check
What happened to the pendulum when the pivot was not shaken (A=0)?→ 1秒もたたずに傾きが大きくなって倒れ、「状態:倒れた」になった。 Within about a second the tilt grew and it fell over, showing "Status: fallen". (A·ω)² = 0.00 is less than 2gL = 5.88; only gravity acts, so even a small tilt keeps growing.
How did the results and the (A·ω)² values differ between "20mm·28Hz" and "10mm·28Hz"?→ 20mm·28Hz では (A·ω)² = 12.38 > 5.88 で、振り子は小さく揺れながら真上(5秒後に θ ≈ 1°)に戻り、立ち続けた。 At 20mm·28Hz, (A·ω)² = 12.38 > 5.88; the pendulum wobbled slightly and returned to vertical (θ ≈ 1° after 5 s) and stayed up. At 10mm·28Hz, (A·ω)² = 3.10 < 5.88 and it fell. Halving the amplitude makes (A·ω)² one quarter as large.
- A = 14 mm、f = 28 Hz With A = 14 mm and f = 28 Hz, what happened with start tilts of 10° and 20°?→ (A·ω)² = 6.07 で 2gL = 5.88 をわずかに上回り、θc ≈ 14° と表示された。 (A·ω)² = 6.07, just above 2gL = 5.88, and θc ≈ 14° was shown. At 10° it stayed up, but at 20°, which is beyond θc, it fell. Near the threshold, the result depends on how large the starting tilt is.
What happened when the frequency was lowered to 15 Hz with A still at 20 mm?→ (A·ω)² = 3.55 で 2gL より小さくなり、倒れた。 (A·ω)² = 3.55, less than 2gL, and it fell. Even with the same amplitude, it is not stable if the shaking is not fast enough (ω = 2πf).
Think further
The pivot moves up and down equally, so why is there still an average effect that pushes the pendulum back to vertical?→ 振動による見かけの力が棒を倒す向きにも戻す向きにもはたらくが、その大きさは傾き θ によって変わり、振り子は速い振動に合わせて細かく揺れる。 The apparent force from shaking acts both to tip the rod and to restore it, but its size depends on the tilt θ, and the pendulum jiggles in step with the fast vibration. Because the restoring push happens to act when the rod is tilted more, averaging over one cycle leaves a net effect that pulls it back to vertical. Its strength grows with the square of the pivot speed A·ω, and when (A·ω)² exceeds the gravity effect 2gL, the upright position becomes stable.
How is this idea of changing something periodically (the pivot or the length) to change the swing related to pumping a swing while standing?→ どちらも振り子のパラメータ(支点の位置や重心までの長さ)を周期的に変えるパラメータ励振である。 Both are parametric excitation: a parameter of the pendulum (pivot position or the distance to the center of mass) is changed periodically. On a swing you stand and squat at twice the swing frequency to make it grow; in the Kapitza pendulum the pivot is shaken much faster than the swing, which instead stabilizes the upright position. Depending on how fast the parameter changes, it can either build up or hold down the motion.
Common misconceptions
Shaking up and down equally must cancel out on average and do nothing." Fast vibration produces a restoring effect that does not average to zero, and when (A·ω)² > 2gL it stabilizes the upright position.
If the condition is met, it can recover from any tilt." Near the threshold the max recoverable angle θc is small, and if it starts tilted more than that, it falls.

The model is a point mass at the end of a rod of length L = 0.30 m, with air resistance and friction lumped into damping γ = 0.5 s⁻¹, and the equation of motion is integrated numerically with RK4. (A·ω)² > 2gL is a rule of thumb from the high-frequency approximation; the "fallen/upright" result on screen comes from the numerical simulation itself (with large amplitude and low frequency the two can disagree). Moving the A or f slider does not restart the run, so have students press "Reset" when comparing.
