Magnus Effect: Lift on a Spinning Cylinder from Circulation

大学・発展 · 物理単元: 流体(ベルヌーイの定理と揚力)Magnus Effect: Lift on a Spinning Cylinder from Circulation 目安 25分about 25 min
Students understand that for a cylinder with circulation Γ in a uniform flow, the side where the spin speeds up the flow has lower pressure, making the pressure distribution asymmetric and producing lift (the Magnus effect) given by the Kutta–Joukowski theorem L = ρUΓ, and that the stagnation points move according to sinθₛ = −s, where s = Γ/(4πaU) is the circulation strength.

Predict (before you touch anything)

If a cylinder in a wind blowing from left to right spins clockwise, do you think it will be pushed up or down?💡 時計回りの円柱の上側の表面と下側の表面は、それぞれ流れと同じ向き・逆向きのどちらに動いているでしょうか。 For a clockwise spin, is the top surface moving with or against the flow? And the bottom surface? Also think about what happens to the pressure where the flow is fast.
Where on the cylinder do you think the stagnation points (where the flow speed is 0) are when there is no spin? How do you think they move as the spin gets stronger?💡 回転がないときの流れの対称性を考えてみましょう。Think about the symmetry of the flow when there is no spin.

Try it

Press the "s=0" button and record the shape of the tracer paths, the Cp(θ) graph (blue: upper half, orange: lower half), and "Stagnation points", "Surface speed top / bottom", and "Theoretical lift L = ρUΓ" in the number panel.
Compare the "s=+0.5" and "s=−0.5" buttons and record "Spin direction", "Lift direction", the lift arrow, the θ of the stagnation points, the top and bottom surface speeds, and the asymmetry of the Cp graph.
Compare "Theoretical lift L = ρUΓ" with "Lift from integrating Cp over θ", and read "Difference" and "Drag D from Cp integral".
Press "s=+1" and then "s=+1.3" and observe how the stagnation point display and the flow pattern change (the yellow stagnation streamline and the region that keeps circling the cylinder). Use "Reset trails" to clear the paths and look again if needed.
Go back to "s=+0.5", change "② Flow speed U [m/s]" from 10 to 20, then with U = 10 change "③ Fluid density ρ [kg/m³]" from 1.2 to 2.4, and record how Γ and the lift change.

Check

At s = 0, what did you see for the flow, the stagnation points, and the lift?→ 流跡線と Cp(θ) は上下対称で、表面流速は上端・下端とも 20.0 m/s(= 2U)。 The tracer paths and Cp(θ) were symmetric top-to-bottom, and the surface speed was 20.0 m/s (= 2U) at both top and bottom. The stagnation points were at θ = 0.0° and 180.0° (directly behind and in front of the cylinder; φ = 90° and 270° measured from the axis perpendicular to the flow), and the lift was 0.
How did s = +0.5 and s = −0.5 differ?→ s = +0.5(時計回り、Γ = 6.283 m²/s)では表面流速が上端 30.0 m/s・下端 10.0 m/s となり、上半面の平均 Cp が −4.55 と低圧、揚力は 75.40 N/m で上向き、よどみ点は下側の θ = 210°, 330°(sinθ = −0.50)へ移った。 At s = +0.5 (clockwise, Γ = 6.283 m²/s) the surface speed was 30.0 m/s at the top and 10.0 m/s at the bottom, the upper half had a mean Cp of −4.55 (low pressure), the lift was 75.40 N/m upward, and the stagnation points moved down to θ = 210° and 330° (sinθ = −0.50). At s = −0.5 (counterclockwise) everything flipped top-to-bottom: lift −75.40 N/m (downward) and stagnation points moved up to θ = 30° and 150°.
Did the lift found by integrating Cp agree with L = ρUΓ? What about the drag?→ どの s でも一致した(例: s = +0.5 で両方 75.40 N/m、差は 10⁻¹³ N/m 程度)。 Yes, for every s (for example, both were 75.40 N/m at s = +0.5, with a difference of about 10⁻¹³ N/m). The force from adding up the surface pressure is exactly ρUΓ. The drag D was 0.000 N/m.
What happened to the stagnation points at s = +1 and s = +1.3? What happened to the lift when U or ρ was doubled?→ s = +1 では2つのよどみ点が円柱の真下 θ = 270° の1点に一致し、下端の表面流速は 0.0 m/s になった。 At s = +1 the two stagnation points merged into one at the bottom, θ = 270°, and the bottom surface speed was 0.0 m/s. At s = +1.3 the stagnation point left the surface and sat in the flow at r = 2.13a, θ = 270°, and particles inside the region bounded by the yellow line kept circling the cylinder. At s = +0.5, raising U to 20 m/s also raised Γ to 12.566 m²/s, so the lift became 301.59 N/m (about 4 times); raising ρ to 2.4 made the lift 150.80 N/m (2 times).

Think further

Why did doubling U with s held fixed make the lift 4 times larger instead of 2 times?→ s = Γ/(4πaU) L = ρUΓ = 4πaρU²s Holding s = Γ/(4πaU) fixed means Γ = 4πaUs also doubles with U. Then L = ρUΓ = 4πaρU²s is proportional to U², so it becomes 4 times larger. If Γ (that is, the spin rate) were kept fixed and only U doubled, the lift would only double.
How is the curving of a ball in baseball or soccer (a curveball or banana kick) related to this simulation?→ 回転するボールのまわりにも循環ができ、回転の向きに流れが速くなる側が低圧になって、進行方向に垂直な力(マグヌス力)を受けて曲がる。 A spinning ball also has circulation around it; the side where the spin speeds up the air has lower pressure, so the ball feels a force perpendicular to its motion (the Magnus force) and curves. A real ball is 3D, and its circulation comes from viscosity letting the spinning surface drag the air, but the chain "spin → circulation → pressure difference → lift" is the same.

This is an inviscid, irrotational potential-flow model (cylinder radius a = 0.10 m, 2D per unit length), so there is no boundary layer, separation, or wake, and the drag is always 0 (d'Alembert's paradox); a real spinning cylinder gets less lift than L = ρUΓ. The angle θ is measured counterclockwise from the downstream direction (right), so with Γ = 0 the stagnation points are shown at θ = 0° and 180°. The number panel also lists φ = θ + 90°, measured from the axis perpendicular to the flow, which helps when comparing with textbook diagrams.
