Butterfly Effect Lab: How a Double Pendulum Depends on Its Starting Conditions

大学・発展 · 物理単元: カオス(二重振り子)Butterfly Effect Lab: How a Double Pendulum Depends on Its Starting Conditions 目安 25分about 25 min
Students understand that in a chaotic system such as a double pendulum, a tiny difference in starting conditions grows exponentially with a positive Lyapunov exponent λ (a straight line on a semi-log graph) until it saturates, so making the initial error smaller extends the predictable time only logarithmically.

Predict (before you touch anything)

Two double pendulums are released together, with only the lower arm's starting angle differing by 0.0001 rad (about 0.006°). How long will their motions look the same?💡 差が「毎秒一定量ずつ」増えるのか、「毎秒一定の倍率で」増えるのかで、答えは大きく変わる。The answer depends hugely on whether the difference grows by a fixed amount each second or by a fixed factor each second.
If you could make the starting difference 100 times smaller, how many times longer would the two pendulums look the same?💡 予想を立てたら、スライダー (b) で初期角差を変えてグラフの線がどう平行移動するか確かめよう。Once you have a prediction, change the starting gap with slider (b) and see how the line on the graph shifts.

Try it

With the starting settings ((a) Mass ratio m2/m1 = 1.00, (b) Start gap Δθ0 = 1.0e-4 rad, (c) Start angle θ1(0) = 120°), press "Reset". Watch blue A and red B swing on top of each other and the log graph of |Δθ1|+|Δθ2|, and record the times when the badge changes from "Nearly overlapping" to "Diverging" to "Fully diverged!". Press "Speed ×1" to change the playback speed if needed.
On the graph, find the part where the difference rises along a straight line and the part where it levels off. Record "Est. λ", "E drift" and "Max error" from the HUD.
Change (b) Start gap Δθ0 to 1.0e-2 rad and 1.0e-1 rad, and compare the times when "Fully diverged!" appears.
Set (b) back to 1.0e-4 rad, set (c) Start angle θ1(0) to 150°, and compare (a) Mass ratio m2/m1 = 1.00 with 0.05 (use the grey previous-run line too). Repeat the comparison at 170°.
Set (a) back to 1.00 and (c) Start angle to 40°, and check whether the two pendulums separate when the swing is small.

Check

With the starting settings (θ1(0) = 120°, m2/m1 = 1, Δθ0 = 1e-4 rad), after how many seconds do "Diverging" and "Fully diverged!" appear? What is Est. Diverging" (gap above 0.01 rad) appears after about 4 s and "Fully diverged!" (above 0.5 rad) after about 7.5 s. Est. λ ≈ 1.1 /s. The graph first rises along a straight line (with small wiggles) and then levels off at a few rad (saturation).
How does the time of "Fully diverged!" change for Δθ0 = 1e-4, 1e-2 and 1e-1 rad?→ 約7.5秒、約3.7秒、約1.7秒。 About 7.5 s, about 3.7 s and about 1.7 s. Making the starting gap 100 times larger shortens the time by only about 4 s, close to ln100/λ ≈ 4.6/1.1 ≈ 4 s.
At θ1(0) = 150° and 170°, how do Est. λ and the divergence time differ between m2/m1 = 1 and 0.05?→ 150° では m2/m1 = 1 で λ ≈ 2.0 /s・約5.5秒、0.05 で λ ≈ 0.9 /s・約8.8秒。 At 150°: m2/m1 = 1 gives λ ≈ 2.0 /s and about 5.5 s; 0.05 gives λ ≈ 0.9 /s and about 8.8 s. At 170°: about 3.4 s for 1 and about 12.8 s for 0.05. With a light lower bob the separation grows more slowly and the two stay together longer.
What happens at θ1(0) = 40° (m2/m1 = 1)? And how large is the E drift in every case?→ 40秒たっても差は 3e-4 rad 程度で「ほぼ重なっている」のままで、推定λ ≈ 0.04 /s とほぼ規則的な運動になる。 Even after 40 s the gap is only about 3e-4 rad and the badge stays "Nearly overlapping", with Est. λ ≈ 0.04 /s: the motion is nearly regular. The E drift shows ±0.0000% in every case, so the energy error from the numerical integration is tiny.

Think further

Why can't weather forecasts reach many weeks ahead even if observations become 10 times more precise? Explain using the results of this simulation.→ カオス系では差が d(t) ≈ Δθ0·e^{λt} と指数関数的に増えるので、差が許容量に達するまでの時間は ln(許容量/Δθ0)/λ になる。 In a chaotic system the difference grows exponentially, d(t) ≈ Δθ0·e^{λt}, so the time to reach an allowed error is ln(allowed/Δθ0)/λ. Making the initial error 10 times smaller adds only ln10/λ (about 2 s for this pendulum), so better precision extends the predictable time only logarithmically. The atmosphere behaves the same way, which limits accurate long-range forecasts.
Computer calculations have rounding errors too. In what sense can we still trust the results of this simulation?→ 丸め誤差や打ち切り誤差も e^{λt} で拡大されるので、分岐した後のA・Bの具体的な動き(個々の軌道)は長時間は正しく追えない。 Rounding and truncation errors are also magnified by e^{λt}, so the exact motion of A and B after they separate (the individual trajectories) cannot be followed correctly for long. But energy conservation, the size of λ and the pattern "exponential growth then saturation" do not depend on the method, so those can be trusted.

The correct equations of motion derived from the Lagrangian are integrated with RK4 (dt = 1 ms), with no friction or air resistance. The start has θ2(0) = θ1(0) (the arms in a straight line), and only B adds Δθ0 to θ2(0). Est. λ is a rough value from the slope of the straight part of the graph, not the true maximal Lyapunov exponent. Because l1 = l2, even with m2 ≪ m1 a light lower bob can be driven into large resonant swings at small amplitude, so the motion is not regular for every start (see the notes lower on the page).
