Double Pendulum Chaos Lab
Students understand that a double pendulum is a deterministic system fully governed by its equations of motion, yet at large amplitudes it becomes chaotic: a tiny difference in the starting angle grows rapidly over time (sensitivity to initial conditions, the butterfly effect), making long-term prediction impossible, while the total energy stays conserved throughout.

Predict (before you touch anything)
If a second pendulum (the twin) is released at the same time with only the lower arm's starting angle shifted by 0.001 rad (about 0.06°), do you think the two will still move almost the same way after 10 seconds?💡 小さなずれが、時間とともに一定のままか、少しずつ増えるか、急に大きくなるかを考えてみましょう。Think about whether a small difference stays the same, grows slowly, or suddenly becomes large as time goes on.
If the starting angle is reduced from 120° to 30°, do you think the way the twin separates will change?💡 振れ幅が小さいとき、振り子の動きはどんな規則的な運動に近づくでしょうか。When the swing is small, what kind of regular motion does a pendulum's movement resemble?
Try it
In the starting state ("Gravity g" 9.81 m/s², "Start angle θ1(0)" 120°, "Offset Δθ" 0.001 rad), press "Reset" and watch the blue main pendulum and the see-through pink twin. Record "Twin distance", the "Split:" readout and t at the top. You may set "Time speed" to ×2.00 to save time.
Set "Offset Δθ" to its minimum, 1.0e-5 rad (0.00001 rad), and to its maximum, 0.05 rad. Record the split time t for each and compare it with the 0.001 rad case.
Return Δθ to 0.001 rad, set "Start angle θ1(0)" to 30°, and watch the twin distance and the shape of the trail for at least 30 seconds.
Return the start angle to 120°, press "Moon 1.62" or "Jupiter 24.8" and then "Reset". Compare how fast the pendulum moves and when it splits with the "Earth 9.81" case.
Under every condition, check how the "E" and "Drift" values at the top change during the motion.
Check
With θ1(0) = 120° and Δθ = 0.001 rad, when did the main pendulum and the twin split? What was the twin distance before and after?→ 数秒間はほぼ重なって見え(距離 約 0.001〜0.04 m)、t ≈ 5.6 s で「分岐」と表示された(距離 > 0.2 m)。 For several seconds they looked almost overlapping (distance about 0.001–0.04 m), and "Split" appeared at t ≈ 5.6 s (distance > 0.2 m). After that the distance grew to about 1–3 m and the two moved completely differently.
What were the split times for Δθ = 0.00001 rad, 0.001 rad and 0.05 rad?→ およそ 8.9 s、5.6 s、2.4 s だった。 About 8.9 s, 5.6 s and 2.4 s. Making the initial difference 100 times smaller only delays the split by a few seconds; no matter how small the difference, the two eventually separate widely.
Even after 50 seconds the twin distance stayed around 0.003 m and the readout kept saying "Split: not yet (almost overlapping)". The trail also looked fairly regular: with small swings, chaotic behavior hardly appears.
During the motion, what happened to the total energy E and the drift? What about when g was changed?→ 地球の重力・120° では E = 44.14500 J のまま、ドリフトは ±0.0001 % 未満でほぼ一定だった。 With Earth gravity at 120°, E stayed at 44.14500 J and the drift was below ±0.0001 %, essentially constant. On the Moon E ≈ 7.29 J and on Jupiter E ≈ 111.6 J, but each stayed constant during the motion. Mechanical energy is conserved even in chaos.
Think further
The double pendulum's motion is completely determined by its equations, so why can't its motion far into the future be predicted? In a chaotic system, an initial difference grows roughly exponentially, so even a tiny measurement error makes the prediction and reality completely different after some time. That is why making Δθ 100 times smaller delayed the split by only a few seconds. The atmosphere is a similar chaotic system, so weather forecasts become unreliable beyond a few days to about two weeks.
With the Moon's gravity the split came at about 13.7 s, and with Jupiter's gravity (Δθ = 0.00001 rad) at about 5.6 s. Why does changing g change the split time?→ 振り子の時間の目安は √(L/g) で決まり、g が大きいほど同じ動きが速く進むから。 The pendulum's natural time scale is √(L/g), so a larger g makes the same motion run faster. For the same starting angle the shape of the motion is the same and only the pace changes, by a factor of √g. The 5.6 s on Earth becomes 5.6 × √(9.81/1.62) ≈ 13.8 s on the Moon, matching what we observed.
Common misconceptions
Chaos means moving randomly." The double pendulum uses no randomness; it is a deterministic system following its equations of motion, and the same initial conditions always give the same motion. It is unpredictable because tiny initial differences grow rapidly.
If we make the initial error small enough, we can predict as far ahead as we like." Making the error 100 times smaller extends the predictable time by only a few seconds.

The model uses point masses (L1 = L2 = 1.0 m, m1 = m2 = 1.0 kg) on massless rods with no air resistance or friction, starting from θ2(0) = θ1(0) at rest. The nonlinear equations of motion are solved with RK4 (time step about 0.002 s), so the energy drift stays near 0 %. Changing θ1 or Δθ restarts the run, but changing g continues from the current state, so have students press "Reset" after changing g when comparing. "Split" is defined as a distance greater than 0.2 m.
