Redshift and Hubble's Law Lab
Students understand Hubble's law v = H0 × d (the farther a galaxy, the faster it recedes) and how redshift arises because the expansion of space itself stretches the wavelength of light by a factor 1+z = a(now)/a(emit).

Predict (before you touch anything)
For the same hydrogen Hα line (656.3 nm), how do you think the wavelength of light from a distant galaxy differs from that of light from a nearby galaxy?💡 遠い銀河の光ほど、地球に届くまでに長い時間、膨張する宇宙の中を進んできます。Light from a more distant galaxy travels for a longer time through the expanding universe before it reaches Earth.
If the redshift keeps growing, do you think the observed light will always remain visible red light?💡 人の目に見える光の波長にはおよその範囲があります。The wavelengths of light that human eyes can see lie within a limited range.
Try it
In the starting state ("Distance to galaxy d" 1,500 Mpc, "Hubble constant H0" 70 km/s/Mpc, "Emitted wavelength λ_emit" 500.0 nm), watch the wave traveling from the galaxy to Earth gradually stretch, and the dot on the "Timeline of scale factor a(t)" move from a(emit) to a(now)=1.
Press "Use hydrogen Hα line 656.3nm", then change the distance d to 100 Mpc → 1,000 Mpc → 3,000 Mpc and record "Recession velocity v = H0 × d", "Redshift z", "Observed wavelength λ_obs" and "Band of observed light" in the table.
Keep the distance at 1,000 Mpc and change the "Hubble constant H0" to 50 → 70 → 90 km/s/Mpc. Compare how the recession velocity and the observed wavelength change.
Release the Hα lock, set "Emitted wavelength λ_emit" to 500.0 nm and the distance to 500 Mpc. On the visible spectrum strip at the bottom, compare the positions and colors of the ▼emitted and ▲observed markers.
Set the distance d to its maximum, 10,000 Mpc, check the recession velocity v and the band of observed light, then press "Reset" to return to the starting state.
Check
(H0 = 70)。With the Hα line, what were the recession velocity and observed wavelength at 100 Mpc and 1,000 Mpc (H0 = 70)?→ 100 Mpc では v = 7,000 km/s、z ≈ 0.023、λ_obs ≈ 671.6 nm(可視光)。 At 100 Mpc, v = 7,000 km/s, z ≈ 0.023 and λ_obs ≈ 671.6 nm (visible light). At 1,000 Mpc, v = 70,000 km/s, z ≈ 0.23 and λ_obs ≈ 809.5 nm, shown as "Not visible (infrared)". Ten times the distance gives ten times the recession velocity.
With the distance fixed at 1,000 Mpc, what happened when H0 was changed from 50 to 90?→ 後退速度は 50,000 km/s から 90,000 km/s に増え、z は約 0.17 から約 0.30 に、Hα の観測波長は約 766 nm から約 853 nm に伸びた。 The recession velocity rose from 50,000 km/s to 90,000 km/s, z went from about 0.17 to about 0.30, and the observed Hα wavelength grew from about 766 nm to about 853 nm. At the same distance, a larger H0 gives a larger redshift.
With λ_emit = 500 nm and a distance of 500 Mpc, where was the ▲observed marker on the spectrum strip?→ ▼放出(500 nm、青緑)より長波長側の約 558 nm(黄緑)にあり、矢印は赤の方向を向いていた。 It was at about 558 nm (yellow-green), on the longer-wavelength side of the ▼emitted marker (500 nm, blue-green), with the arrow pointing toward red. Since z ≈ 0.117, 500 × 1.117 ≈ 558 nm.
How did the wavelength change while the light was traveling from the galaxy to Earth?→ 銀河を出た瞬間に急に変わるのではなく、進むにつれて少しずつ連続的に伸びていった。 It did not jump all at once when leaving the galaxy; it stretched gradually and continuously as the light traveled. The "Front λ=" value at the head of the wave kept increasing, the spacing of the space grid lines widened at the same time, and a(t) on the timeline approached 1.
Think further
At 10,000 Mpc, the recession velocity became 700,000 km/s, faster than light (about 300,000 km/s). Does this break the theory of relativity?→ 反しない。 No. The speed-of-light limit applies to objects moving through space, while the recession velocity comes from space itself stretching. As the on-screen sentence says, the galaxy is not flying through space at the speed of light. Note, however, that z = v/c is a low-speed approximation, so the value of such a large z is not accurate.
Why can measuring the redshift of spectral lines from a distant galaxy be used to estimate its distance?→ Hα線のように放出時の波長がわかっている線の観測波長から z を求めると、v ≈ cz で後退速度がわかる。 From the observed wavelength of a line whose emitted wavelength is known, such as Hα, we get z, and v ≈ cz gives the recession velocity. Then Hubble's law v = H0 × d gives the distance d = v / H0. In the simulation, z and λ_obs also grew in proportion to the distance.
Common misconceptions
Redshift is simply the Doppler effect of galaxies racing away through space." Cosmological redshift happens because space itself stretches while the light travels, stretching the wavelength by a(now)/a(emit).
Redshifted light always looks red." Blue light may only shift to green or yellow, while red light may shift into the infrared and become invisible.

z = v/c is a low-speed approximation valid for v≪c, so for large z (thousands of Mpc and beyond) the values do not match the true cosmological distance–redshift relation. a(t) is a simple model that grows exponentially while the light travels, and the colors on the spectrum strip are an approximate wavelength-to-RGB conversion. Wavelengths above about 750 nm are labeled "Not visible (infrared)".
