Star Evolution on the HR Diagram

Star Evolution on the HR Diagram 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand, as motion on the HR diagram, that a star begins its life on the main sequence at a position set by its mass, that more massive stars are brighter, hotter and shorter-lived, and that Sun-like stars become red giants and then white dwarfs while massive stars become red supergiants and end in a supernova.

Predict (before you touch anything)

Do you think a star with 10 times the mass of the Sun lives longer or shorter than the Sun? Make your prediction keeping in mind that it also has 10 times as much fuel (hydrogen).💡 燃料の量だけでなく、どれくらいの勢いで燃料を使う(どれくらい明るく輝く)かも関係します。It depends not only on how much fuel there is but also on how fast the fuel is used (how brightly the star shines).
When the Sun grows old and becomes a red giant, which way do you think its point will move on the HR diagram?💡 HR図の横軸は左ほど高温、縦軸は上ほど明るいことを確かめてから考えましょう。First check that on this HR diagram, hotter is to the left and brighter is toward the top.

Try it

In the starting state (Initial mass M = 1.00 M☉, lifetime τ = 10 billion yr), press "Pause". Check the HR diagram axes ("Surface temperature T [K] (log, reversed)" has hot on the left; "Absolute magnitude" is brighter toward the top) and where the "Main sequence", "Red giants & supergiants" and "White dwarfs" labels are.
With "Time elapsed t" at 0, move the "Initial mass M" slider through 0.50 → 1.00 → 10.0 → 25.0 M☉. Watch the point move along the main-sequence band and record the surface temperature, luminosity and lifetime τ.
Return to M = 1.00 M☉ and slowly move the "Time elapsed t" slider to the right (or press "Play"). Watch the stage name in the top-right panel (Main-sequence star → Subgiant → Red giant → Outer layers ejected (planetary nebula) → White dwarf) and how the star's color and radius change.
Do the same for M = 10.0 M☉ and 25.0 M☉. Check that after the red supergiant stage comes "Supernova explosion!", and see what is left at the end (neutron star / black hole).
Set M = 1.00 M☉ and t = 400 million yr, then, without touching t, raise only M to 3.54 M☉ and 10.0 M☉. Compare the stage name, "Life progress" and "Progress of a 1 M☉ star at same t".

Check

On the main sequence, how did the surface temperature, luminosity and lifetime change as the mass increased?→ 質量が大きいほど高温で明るく、寿命は短くなった。 The more massive the star, the hotter and brighter it was and the shorter it lived. 0.50 M☉: about 3,900 K, 0.088 L☉, 56.6 billion yr; 1.00 M☉: about 5,700 K, 1 L☉, 10 billion yr; 10.0 M☉: about 20,000 K, 3172 L☉, 31.6 million yr; 25.0 M☉: about 33,000 K, 7.8×10⁴ L☉, 3.2 million yr. The point moved along the main-sequence band from lower right to upper left.
When the 1.00 M☉ star became a red giant, which way did its point move on the HR diagram, and what happened to its radius?→ 点は右上(低温で明るい側)へ動いた。 The point moved to the upper right (cooler but brighter). For example, at about 4,300 K and 43.5 L☉ the radius was about 11.6 R☉: the surface got cooler yet the star got brighter because its radius swelled greatly.
How did the end of the 1.00 M☉ star differ from the end of the 10.0 M☉ and 25.0 M☉ stars?→ 1.00 M☉ は外層を放出(惑星状星雲)したあと、HR図の左下へ移って白色矮星(半径約 0.008〜0.013 R☉、地球程度)になった。 The 1.00 M☉ star ejected its outer layers (planetary nebula) and moved to the lower left of the HR diagram to become a white dwarf (radius about 0.008 to 0.013 R☉, about the size of Earth). The 10.0 M☉ star became a red supergiant and then exploded as a supernova, leaving a neutron star; the 25.0 M☉ star left a black hole.
When you kept t = 400 million yr and raised only the mass, how did the star's stage change?→ 1.00 M☉ では寿命の進捗 4.0 % でまだ主系列星だったが、3.54 M☉ では進捗 94.2 % で赤色巨星になり、10.0 M☉ では寿命 3155万年を過ぎて超新星のあと(中性子星が残る)になった。 At 1.00 M☉ the life progress was 4.0 % and it was still a main-sequence star, but at 3.54 M☉ the progress was 94.2 % and it was a red giant, and at 10.0 M☉ it had passed its 31.6-million-year lifetime and was already past the supernova (a neutron star remains). In the same amount of time, heavier stars go through their lives faster.

Think further

Why do massive stars have shorter lives even though they have more fuel?→ 燃料の量は質量 M に比例するが、明るさ(燃料を使う速さ)は L ∝ M^3.5 とずっと急に増えるため、寿命は M ÷ M^3.5 = M^(−2.5) に比例して短くなる。 The amount of fuel is proportional to the mass M, but the luminosity (how fast fuel is used) rises much faster, as L ∝ M^3.5. So the lifetime scales as M ÷ M^3.5 = M^(−2.5). A 10 M☉ star has 10 times the fuel but shines about 3000 times brighter, so it lives only about 1/300 as long (10 billion yr → about 32 million yr).
Why are white dwarfs near the bottom of the HR diagram (the dim side) even though they are very hot?→ 光度は半径の2乗と表面温度の4乗に比例する(R = √L × (5700/T)² の関係)。 Luminosity is proportional to the square of the radius and the fourth power of the surface temperature (the relation R = √L × (5700/T)²). Even at 15,000 to 28,000 K, a white dwarf's radius is only about 1/100 of the Sun's, so its surface area is tiny and its total luminosity is only about 0.003 to 0.1 L☉.

The model uses the approximations L = M^3.5, T = 5700×M^0.55 K and lifetime τ = 10 billion yr×M^(−2.5), and the point does not move during the main sequence. The track after the main sequence smoothly joins typical key points and is schematic; stars of 8 M☉ or more go supernova and 20 M☉ or more leave a black hole. Giant-stage luminosity for massive stars is capped at the top of the chart (−8 mag), and the values after the supernova are those of the ejected gas, so have students focus on which way the point moves rather than on exact numbers.
