Solubility and Recrystallization Simulator (Potassium Nitrate Solution)

中1 · 化学単元: 水溶液と溶解度・再結晶Solubility and Recrystallization Simulator (Potassium Nitrate Solution) 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that the amount of a substance that can dissolve in water (its solubility) has a limit that depends on temperature, and that cooling a saturated potassium nitrate solution makes the extra solute come out as crystals (recrystallization).

Predict (before you touch anything)

If you put 100 g of potassium nitrate into 100 g of water at 20 °C, will it all dissolve?💡 砂糖や食塩も、いくらでも溶けるわけではないことを思い出そう。Remember that even sugar or salt cannot dissolve in unlimited amounts.
If you cool a potassium nitrate solution in which everything has dissolved, what will happen in the beaker?💡 溶ける量の限度が、温度によって変わるかどうかを考えよう。Think about whether the limit on how much can dissolve changes with temperature.

Try it

With "Target temperature" at 20℃ and "KNO₃ added (per 100 g water)" at 100 g, look at "Dissolved", "Crystals", "State" and the crystals at the bottom of the beaker.
Press "Heat to 100℃" and watch the crystals dissolve and the ● marker move on the graph.
Lower "Target temperature" to 60℃ and then to 40℃, and record "Dissolved", "Crystals" and "State" each time.
Press "Cool to 0℃" and record the amount of crystals that form.
Compare the shape of the KNO₃ solubility curve with the faint dashed NaCl (almost flat) curve on the graph.

Check

At 20℃ with 100 g of KNO₃ added, how much is dissolved and how much is crystals?→ 溶けている量 32 g(20℃の溶解度)、結晶 68 g。 32 g is dissolved (the solubility at 20℃) and 68 g is crystals. The state is "Saturated".
What is the state at 60℃ and at 100℃?→ どちらも 100 g すべてが溶けて結晶は 0 g、「不飽和」(溶解度は 60℃で 110 g、100℃で 246 g なので、まだ溶ける)。In both, all 100 g is dissolved, crystals are 0 g, and the state is "Unsaturated" (solubility is 110 g at 60℃ and 246 g at 100℃, so more can still dissolve).
When cooled from 100℃ to 40℃ and then to 0℃, how many grams of crystals form at each temperature?→ 40℃では溶けている量 64 g・結晶 36 g、0℃では溶けている量 13 g・結晶 87 g。 100 g。At 40℃, 64 g is dissolved and 36 g is crystals; at 0℃, 13 g is dissolved and 87 g is crystals. Dissolved plus crystals always adds up to 100 g.
From the graph, at about what temperature does exactly 100 g of KNO₃ just dissolve completely?→ およそ 56℃(56℃で溶解度約 100 g)。 About 56℃ (the solubility is about 100 g there). Below this temperature crystals appear.

Think further

Why do hardly any crystals appear when a salt (sodium chloride) solution is cooled? How could you get salt crystals out instead?→ グラフのとおり NaCl の溶解度は温度によってほとんど変わらない(約 36〜39 g)ので、冷やしても溶けきれなくなる量がわずかだから。 As the graph shows, NaCl solubility hardly changes with temperature (about 36–39 g), so cooling makes very little extra solute. Evaporating the water lets you get the crystals.
Recrystallization is used to get a pure substance from an impure one. Why does this method work?→ 高温で溶かしてから冷やすと、目的の物質は溶解度が下がって結晶として出てくるが、少量の不純物は溶解度の限度に達しないので水溶液中に残るから。When the mixture is dissolved hot and then cooled, the wanted substance exceeds its lower solubility and crystallizes, while the small amount of impurity stays below its limit and remains in the solution.

Solubility is interpolated from values per 100 g of water (13 g at 0℃, 32 g at 20℃, 64 g at 40℃, 110 g at 60℃, 169 g at 80℃, 246 g at 100℃), and the model assumes equilibrium (saturation) is reached immediately when the temperature changes. Supersaturation (crystals not appearing right away on cooling) and evaporation of water are not modeled. Students can also check that with 250 g of KNO₃, only 246 g dissolves even at 100℃ and 4 g remains as crystals.
