Holling Type II Functional Response: Feeding Rate Saturates
Students understand that a predator's feeding rate does not keep rising in proportion to prey density; because of the handling time Th after each capture, it follows a curve that bends over and approaches a maximum of 1/Th (Holling type II functional response).

Predict (before you touch anything)
If the number of aphids in the arena is increased 10 times or 100 times, do you think the number each ladybird eats per second also becomes 10 or 100 times larger?💡 テントウムシはアブラムシを捕まえたあと、すぐに次を探しに行けるでしょうか。After a ladybird catches an aphid, can it immediately go looking for the next one?
If the time needed to eat one aphid (handling time) is made longer, how do you think the graph curve will change?💡 獲物が無限にいるとき、1秒間に食べられる最大数は処理時間でどう決まるでしょうか。If prey were unlimited, how would handling time set the most prey a predator could eat in one second?
Try it
Set the playback speed menu to "×10" and watch the arena with "① Starting prey" and "② Handling time Th=3.0 s/prey". Check that when a ladybird touches an aphid it shows "Eating (stopped)" and stays still until the orange ring completes, and read the "Time" and "Prey left" display at the top.
Press "Clear", then "5-step run", and wait while five experiments run automatically with 25 → 80 → 250 → 700 → 2000 starting prey. See whether the red dots (Data) follow the blue "theory" curve.
Read the "Last:" line at the lower right of the graph and the red dashed line "Max feeding rate=1/Th=0.33 prey/s", and compare it with the measured value at 2000 prey (about 3100/m²). Also compare with the grey dotted "Straight line if Th=0".
Raise the "② Handling time" slider to 8.0 s/prey and check that the curve and dashed line are redrawn immediately, then press "5-step run" again. Notice that points from the earlier Th stay on the graph as open circles (other Th).
Check
At Th = 3.0 s, how did the feeding rate per predator change as prey density increased?→ 密度が低いうちはほぼ比例して急に増えたが、密度が上がるにつれて増え方が鈍り、上に凸の曲線になった。 At low density it rose steeply, almost in proportion, but the increase slowed as density rose, giving a curve that bends over. Even at about 3100/m² (2000 prey) it was only about 0.30 prey/s, below the 0.33 prey/s maximum. The data points roughly followed the theory curve.
When Th was set to 8.0 s, what happened to the dashed maximum line and the curve?→ 上限は 1/8=約 0.13匹/秒 に下がり、曲線全体が低く平らになった。 The maximum dropped to 1/8 ≈ 0.13 prey/s and the whole curve became lower and flatter. At 2000 prey the measured value was about 0.12 prey/s, still below the maximum. The Th = 3.0 s points remained as open circles so the two trends could be compared.
What were the ladybirds marked "Eating (stopped)" doing? What happened to the aphids that were eaten?→ 処理時間のあいだ移動を止めて食べており、その間は新しい獲物を探さなかった(すぐ横にアブラムシがいても捕まえない)。 They stopped moving and ate for the handling time, and did not search for new prey during it (even if an aphid was right next to them). Eaten aphids vanished from the arena and never came back or reproduced, so "Prey left" only went down.
Think further
Why can the feeding rate never exceed 1/Th, however high the prey density is?→ 1匹食べるたびに必ず Th 秒は探索できないので、獲物が目の前に無限にいて探索時間が0になっても、1秒間に食べられるのは最大 1/Th 匹になる。式 f=aN/(1+a·Th·N) で N を大きくすると f は 1/Th に近づく。Every prey eaten costs Th seconds in which the predator cannot search, so even if prey were everywhere and search time dropped to zero, it could eat at most 1/Th prey per second. In f = aN/(1 + a·Th·N), f approaches 1/Th as N becomes large.
What does this property mean for the relationship between predator and prey populations?→ 被食者が大発生すると、捕食者1匹あたりが食べる割合(食べられる数÷全個体数)はむしろ下がるので、捕食だけで被食者を絶滅させにくく、被食者は生き残りやすい。 When prey become very abundant, the fraction of the prey population eaten actually goes down, so predation alone rarely drives the prey extinct and prey tend to survive. In the 2000-prey run only a few dozen aphids were eaten in 30 s.
Common misconceptions
The more prey there are, the more a predator can eat without limit." Because of handling time, each predator's feeding rate has a maximum of 1/Th.
If predators are present, the prey will eventually all be eaten." Since the feeding rate saturates, a smaller fraction of prey is eaten when prey density is high.

The theory uses the correct type II formula f = aN/(1 + a·Th·N) (also stated in the on-screen Assumptions). There are always 5 predators; because density falls as prey are eaten during the 30 s, the x-axis is the mean density, and part-eaten prey are counted as a fraction. Random movement makes each point scatter a little, so have students use "Run again" several times and read the overall trend.
