Rabbits on a Meadow: Logistic Growth and Carrying Capacity
Students understand that with limited resources a population first grows almost exponentially, but density effects lower the per-capita growth rate r(1−P/K), so the population levels off at the carrying capacity K (logistic growth).

Predict (before you touch anything)
Four rabbits are released on a meadow with no predators, but the amount of grass is limited. How do you think the number of rabbits will change over time? Sketch the shape of the graph.💡 ウサギが少ないときと、草原がウサギでいっぱいになったときとで、1匹あたりの増え方は同じでしょうか。Is the growth per rabbit the same when there are only a few rabbits as when the meadow is crowded?
At about what population size do you think the rabbits increase fastest (most rabbits added per day)?💡 増える速さは「親になれる個体の数」と「1匹あたりの増えやすさ」の両方で決まります。The speed of increase depends on both how many rabbits can reproduce and how easily each one reproduces.
Try it
With the default settings (Growth rate r = 0.80 /day, Carrying capacity K = 100, Starting population P0 = 4, Speed ×1.0), let the run go to the end and compare the solid line (counted rabbits), the blue dashed line (theoretical logistic curve) and the red dotted line (exponential growth). On the meadow, also watch the glowing rings (births) and the fading dots (deaths from crowding).
Press "Pause" partway through and read P, dP/dt, (dP/dt)/P and r(1−P/K) in the readout under the graph. Compare (dP/dt)/P when P is small and when P is close to K.
Find the yellow dot labeled "P=K/2 steepest" on the graph (its time and population) and look at the slope of the tangent line drawn there.
Set "Carrying capacity K" to 50 and press "Reset" (slider changes take effect only when you press "Reset"). Compare where the population levels off and where the yellow dot is with the K = 100 run.
Set "Carrying capacity K" to 200 and "Starting population P0" to 150, press "Reset", and observe the shape of the curve when P0 is larger than K/2.
Check
With the default settings, about what size did the population end up at? How did it differ from the dotted exponential curve?→ 個体数は K = 100 匹付近で頭打ちになり、その後はおよそ 80〜115 匹の間でゆらぐ。 The population levels off around K = 100 and then fluctuates roughly between 80 and 115. The dotted exponential curve matches the others at first, but by about day 4 it shoots past K and keeps rising.
How did the per-capita growth rate (dP/dt)/P differ between small P and P close to K?→ P When P is small it is close to r = 0.8 /day (r(1−P/K) ≈ 0.63 /day at P = 21), but as P approaches K it drops toward 0, and above K it becomes negative.
At what population size was the slope of the graph (rabbits added per day) largest?→ P = K/2 = 50 匹のとき(最初の設定では約 4 日目)。 At P = K/2 = 50 (around day 4 in the default run). The slope there is rK/4 = 0.8 × 100 ÷ 4 = 20 rabbits per day. With K = 50 it moves to K/2 = 25, at about day 3.
When starting with P0 = 150 and K = 200, what shape did the curve have?→ はじめから K/2 を超えているので S 字の前半がなく、増え方は最初が最も速く、しだいにゆるやかになって K = 200 に近づく。 It already starts above K/2, so the first half of the S-curve is missing: growth is fastest at the start and then slows as it approaches K = 200. The graph shows "P0>K/2: no inflection".
Think further
dP/dt = rP(1−P/K) を使って説明しましょう。Why is growth fastest at P = K/2? Explain using dP/dt = rP(1−P/K).→ P When P is small each rabbit grows fast but there are few parents; when P is near K there are many parents but each one adds almost nothing. dP/dt = rP(1−P/K) is a quadratic in P, proportional to P × (K − P), which is largest at P = K/2, giving the maximum rK/4.
In fisheries it is sometimes said that a fish stock should be kept at about K/2 to avoid overfishing. Use what you saw in this simulation to explain why.→ 個体数が K/2 のとき 1 日あたりの増加数が最大(rK/4)になるので、増えた分だけをとれば資源を減らさずに最も多くとり続けられる(最大持続生産量の考え方)。 At K/2 the number added per day is largest (rK/4), so harvesting just that increase gives the largest catch that can be sustained without shrinking the stock (the idea of maximum sustainable yield). Near K there is almost no increase, and at low numbers recovery is slow. Real fisheries management is more complex than this model, though.
Common misconceptions
Students often think that without predators a population keeps growing forever, but limited resources such as food and space cause density effects that stop the growth at the carrying capacity.
Students often think the population stops exactly at K, but because births and deaths happen by chance, a real population keeps fluctuating up and down around K.

In this model each rabbit's birth probability is r·dt and its death probability is r(P/K)·dt, so the average follows dP/dt = rP(1−P/K) (density effects act only on deaths, and age structure and sex are ignored). The solid line is random, so every run differs, and the deviation from the theory curve is larger for small K. Tell students in advance that slider changes apply only after pressing "Reset" and that each run stops ("Finished") after a set time.
