Air Column Resonance (Tuning Fork and Tube)
Students understand that in a tube closed at one end by water, resonance (a loud sound) happens only when the air column length is 1/4, 3/4, or 5/4 of the wavelength λ (= 340 ÷ frequency), because the wave going down and the wave reflected by the water reinforce each other, and that a higher frequency gives a shorter wavelength and therefore shorter resonant lengths.

Predict (before you touch anything)
If you keep a 440 Hz tuning fork ringing while slowly lowering the water (making the air column longer), how do you think the loudness will change?💡 筒の中では、下へ進む波と水面ではね返って上へ戻る波が重なります。 Inside the tube, the wave going down and the wave reflected back up by the water overlap. Could the way they overlap depend on the length?
If you raise the fork's frequency (a higher note), do you think the air column length for resonance will get longer or shorter?💡 音の速さは 340 m/s で一定です。 The speed of sound is fixed at 340 m/s. What happens to the wavelength when the frequency goes up?
Try it
Keep "Fork frequency f" at 440 Hz and read the wavelength λ and the "Resonant lengths (theory)" from the panel on the right.
Turn "Keep ringing" ON (or press "Strike the fork" / tap the fork). Move the "Air column length L (water level)" slider 30.0 cm → 19.3 cm → 38.7 cm → 58.0 cm, and observe the "Loudness" meter, the "Resonance!" / "No resonance" label, and the three waves drawn inside the tube.
Change "Fork frequency f" to 250 Hz and to 550 Hz. Record how fine the waves in the tube look and how the wavelength λ and the list of resonant lengths change.
Set the frequency to 500 Hz, calculate λ/4 yourself, then set L to that value and check whether "Resonance!" appears.
Check
At 440 Hz, what were the wavelength and the resonant lengths?→ 波長 λ = 340 ÷ 440 = 0.773 m = 77.3 cm。 Wavelength λ = 340 ÷ 440 = 0.773 m = 77.3 cm. The resonant lengths are λ/4 = 19.3 cm, 3λ/4 = 58.0 cm, and 5λ/4 = 96.6 cm (7λ/4 = 135.2 cm is longer than the tube).
With "Keep ringing" ON, what did the loudness meter and the labels show as you changed L?→ L = 19.3 cm と 58.0 cm では「共鳴!」 At L = 19.3 cm and 58.0 cm, "Resonance!" appeared and the meter rose to 100%. At L = 38.7 cm (λ/2) it showed "No resonance" at about 29%, and at 30.0 cm it also said "No resonance" with a low meter. Resonance happens only at certain lengths.
How did the purple wave (superposition) inside the tube differ between resonance and no resonance?→ 共鳴しているときは、オレンジ(下へ進む波)と緑(はね返った波)がほぼ重なって強め合い、紫の波が筒の幅いっぱいに大きくゆれた。 At resonance, the orange wave (going down) and the green wave (reflected) nearly lined up and reinforced each other, so the purple wave swung across almost the full width of the tube. Without resonance, the two waves were out of step and partly canceled, so the purple wave stayed small.
What were the wavelength and the λ/4 length at 250 Hz and at 550 Hz?→ 250 Hz At 250 Hz, λ = 136.0 cm and λ/4 = 34.0 cm, and only one resonant length fit in the tube. At 550 Hz, λ = 61.8 cm and λ/4 = 15.5 cm (3λ/4 = 46.4 cm, 5λ/4 = 77.3 cm), and the waves in the tube looked finer and tighter. The higher the frequency, the shorter the wavelength and the resonant lengths.
Think further
How is the difference between neighboring resonant lengths (for example, 58.0 − 19.3) related to the wavelength? How could you use it to find the speed of sound?→ 差は 38.7 cm で、波長 77.3 cm のちょうど半分(λ/2)になっている。 The difference is 38.7 cm, exactly half of the 77.3 cm wavelength (λ/2). If you measure two resonant lengths in an experiment and double their difference, you get λ, and then the speed of sound = frequency × wavelength (440 Hz × 0.773 m ≈ 340 m/s).
At what lengths does a 500 Hz fork resonate? Calculate, then check in the simulation.→ λ = 340 ÷ 500 = 0.68 m = 68 cm なので、λ/4 = 17 cm、3λ/4 = 51 cm、5λ/4 = 85 cm。 λ = 340 ÷ 500 = 0.68 m = 68 cm, so λ/4 = 17 cm, 3λ/4 = 51 cm, and 5λ/4 = 85 cm. Setting L = 17.0 cm showed "Resonance! L = 17.0 cm almost matches λ/4 = 17.0 cm."
Common misconceptions
The longer (or shorter) the air column, the louder the sound gets." Resonance happens only at specific lengths such as λ/4, 3λ/4, and 5λ/4; at lengths in between, the sound is weak.
A higher note needs a longer tube to resonate." A higher frequency means a shorter wavelength, so the resonant air column is shorter.

Air column resonance goes beyond the Grade 7 curriculum, so briefly introduce "wavelength" and "speed of sound = frequency × wavelength" first. The model uses 340 m/s and ignores the end correction at the open mouth, so in a real experiment the measured resonant lengths are slightly shorter than the theory (the λ/2 difference stays the same). The curves in the tube draw the air's back-and-forth motion sideways; remind students that sound is a longitudinal wave and that the motion is shown about 1000 times slower than real.
