DC Motors and Fleming's Left-Hand Rule

中2 · 物理単元: 電流と磁界(フレミング左手の法則、モーター)DC Motors and Fleming's Left-Hand Rule 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that a current-carrying coil in a magnetic field feels forces in the direction given by Fleming's left-hand rule, and that the commutator reverses the current every half turn so the motor keeps turning the same way.

Predict (before you touch anything)

If you reverse only the battery, what happens to the motor's direction of rotation? What if you reverse both the battery and the magnet's N and S poles?💡 フレミング左手の法則では、電流(中指)と磁界(人差し指)の向きが決まると力(親指)の向きが決まる。 In the left-hand rule, the current (middle finger) and the field (index finger) together fix the force (thumb). Try flipping the fingers one at a time.
If the current in the coil always flowed the same way, could the coil keep turning?💡 コイルが半回転すると、左側にあった導線は右側へ移る。 After half a turn, the wire that was on the left moves to the right. Think about which way the force on that wire would then try to turn the coil.

Try it

Start with the default settings (Current 1.5 A, Magnetic field ×1.0, nothing checked). In "① Cross section", find the field arrows, the ● (out of page) and × (into page) wires, and the orange force arrows F, and compare them with the "Left-hand rule" diagram on the right.
In "② Rotating view", watch the commutator and brushes and wait for the coil to pass the vertical position (wires straight above and below the axle). Observe how the ● and × wires and the commutator colors (red/blue) swap before and after that moment.
Check "Reverse battery" and watch the readout (rpm and direction) change. Then also check "Swap magnet N/S", and finally uncheck "Reverse battery". Record the direction of rotation each time.
Uncheck everything. Set Current to 0.5 A, 1.5 A and 3.0 A and read the rpm. Then return Current to 1.5 A and set Magnetic field to ×0.5 and ×2.0 and read the rpm.
Set Current to 0 A and watch what happens to the force arrows and the rotation.

Check

In "① Cross section", which way is the force on the wire on the N-pole side (left) and on the wire on the S-pole side (right)?→ 最初の設定では、左側の導線は●(電流が手前へ)で力は上向き、右側の導線は×(電流が奥へ)で力は下向き。 With the default settings, the left wire is ● (current out of the page) and is pushed up; the right wire is × (current into the page) and is pushed down. The two forces are opposite, so the coil turns clockwise. The field points from N on the left to S on the right.
What happens to the current and force on each wire as the coil passes the vertical position?→ 縦向きの瞬間はブラシが整流子のすき間にあり、導線が灰色になって電流も力も0になるが、コイルは勢いで通りすぎる。 At the vertical position the brushes sit on the gap of the commutator; the wires turn gray and there is no current or force, but the coil coasts through. After that the brush contacts swap, so whichever wire is now on the left becomes ● and the one on the right becomes ×. The forces are again up on the left and down on the right, so the coil keeps turning clockwise.
How did the direction of rotation change for each combination of "Reverse battery" and "Swap magnet N/S"?→ どちらもチェックなし:時計回り。 Neither checked: clockwise. Battery only: counterclockwise. Magnet only: counterclockwise. Both: clockwise (same as the start). Reversing either the current or the field alone reverses the rotation; reversing both leaves it unchanged.
How did the rotation speed (rpm) change with the current and the field strength? What happened at 0 A?→ 電流を大きくしても、磁界を強くしても速く回った(およそ1.5 A・×1.0で約40 rpm、3.0 Aや×2.0で約70 rpm、×0.5で約20 rpm。 Increasing either the current or the field made it turn faster (about 40 rpm at 1.5 A and ×1.0, about 70 rpm at 3.0 A or ×2.0, about 20 rpm at ×0.5; the reading wobbles a little as it turns). At 0 A the force arrows disappear, "Current 0 → no force" is shown, and the coil slows down and stops within a few seconds.

Think further

How would the coil move in a motor without a commutator (current always in the same direction)?→ コイルが縦向きを過ぎると、左右に移った導線の力が逆にコイルを引きもどす向きになる。 Once the coil passed vertical, the forces on the wires (now on the opposite sides) would pull it back. It would rock back and forth around the vertical position and settle there instead of turning continuously. Only because the commutator reverses the current every half turn does the turning effect always act the same way.
The force arrows have the same size at any coil angle, yet near the vertical position they do little to turn the coil. The forces always act up and down. When the coil is near horizontal, they point along the circle of rotation and turn it strongly. Near vertical they mostly push along the line toward or away from the axle, so their turning effect is small.

Clockwise/counterclockwise refers to the view in "① Cross section". In this model the field strength is only a multiplier, and the speed is set by a friction-like drag, so speed rises roughly in proportion to current × field; this is a simplification (real motors are affected by back EMF, so this relation does not hold directly). It is worth pointing out that at the vertical position the brushes sit on the commutator gap, so the current is momentarily zero.
