(BCC/FCC)Atoms per Unit Cell (BCC/FCC)
Students understand, by seeing how the spheres are cut up, that a corner atom is shared by 8 unit cells (1/8 each), a face-center atom by 2 cells (1/2 each), and a body-center atom belongs to one cell, so a body-centered cubic cell contains 2 atoms and a face-centered cubic cell contains 4.

Predict (before you touch anything)
A drawing of a body-centered cubic unit cell shows 9 spheres. How many atoms' worth do you think one unit cell actually contains?💡 結晶では同じ単位格子がすき間なく並んでいます。 In a crystal, identical unit cells are packed side by side. How many unit cells meet around an atom at a corner of the cube?
Try it
With "BCC (body-centred cubic)" selected, set the "B: Share highlight" slider to 0% to see all 9 whole spheres, then return it to 100% and compare the parts inside the unit cell (colored) with the parts outside it (grey see-through).
Set "A: Show neighbouring cells" to 1 shell and observe how the ★ corner atom splits into 8 colored 1/8 pieces, each belonging to a different neighboring cell (colored dashed cubes). You can drag the canvas to turn the view.
Press "FCC (face-centred cubic)", set A back to 0 shells, check that the face-center atoms (green) are cut into half-spheres by the faces, and record the formula under "Atoms per unit cell (breakdown)".
Compare the red dashed line (touching direction) and the radius, nearest-neighbour distance, and packing fraction readouts for BCC and FCC. Press "Replay highlight" to see the cutting animation again.
Check
What formulas and totals were shown for the atoms per unit cell of BCC and FCC?→ BCC = 8×(1/8) + 1×1 = 2個、FCC = 8×(1/8) + 6×(1/2) = 4個。BCC = 8×(1/8) + 1×1 = 2 atoms; FCC = 8×(1/8) + 6×(1/2) = 4 atoms.
With the neighboring cells shown, into how many pieces was the ★ corner atom divided, and where did each piece belong?→ 互いに直交する3つのセル面で8つの1/8片(オクタント)に分けられ、それぞれが周囲の8つの別々の単位格子に属していた。 Three cell faces at right angles cut it into 8 pieces of 1/8 (octants), and each piece belonged to a different one of the 8 surrounding unit cells. So only 1/8 of it belongs to any one unit cell.
In BCC and FCC, along which direction (red dashed line) did the atoms touch, and what was the atomic radius?→ BCC は体対角線で接し r = √3a/4 ≈ 0.433a、FCC は面対角線で接し r = a/(2√2) ≈ 0.354a。 BCC atoms touch along the body diagonal with r = √3a/4 ≈ 0.433a; FCC atoms touch along the face diagonal with r = a/(2√2) ≈ 0.354a. In both, atoms along an edge (neighboring corner atoms) do not touch.
Think further
If an atom sat at the midpoint of a cube edge, what fraction of it would belong to one unit cell?→ 辺は4つの単位格子に共有されるので 1/4。 An edge is shared by 4 unit cells, so 1/4. In general divide by the number of cells sharing the site: corner (8) 1/8, edge (4) 1/4, face (2) 1/2, interior (1) 1.
Why does FCC have more atoms per unit cell and a higher packing fraction (74.0%) than BCC (68.0%)?→ FCC FCC has atoms at the centers of all six faces, packed so they touch along the face diagonals. The volume of 4 atoms, 4×(4/3)πr³, takes up a larger share of the cell volume a³ than BCC's 2 atoms do.
Common misconceptions
The number of spheres drawn is the number of atoms in the unit cell." Atoms on corners and faces are shared with neighboring cells, so BCC has 2 atoms although 9 are drawn, and FCC has 4 although 14 are drawn.

Atoms are drawn as hard spheres with radii set from the contact condition as a ratio to a (no length units; a is the reference). Spheres are drawn as polyhedra, so treat the cut shapes as approximate. The English labels use British spelling (centred, neighbouring), and the button names appear exactly that way.
