Reaction Rate and Activation Energy
Students understand that a reaction happens only in collisions with energy of at least the activation energy Ea, and that raising the temperature sharply increases the high-energy fraction of the Maxwell distribution, so the reaction rate grows exponentially rather than linearly with temperature (Arrhenius equation k = A·e^(−Ea/RT)).

Predict (before you touch anything)
If the temperature is doubled from 300 K to 600 K, by about how many times do you think the reaction rate increases: more than 2 times, about 2 times, or less than 2 times?💡 反応できるのは「すべての衝突」ではなく、エネルギーが十分大きい衝突だけです。Not every collision leads to reaction, only those with enough energy.
How do you think the graph of molecular speeds changes when the temperature rises?💡 分子の総数は変わらないことに注意しましょう。Remember that the total number of molecules does not change.
Try it
At the start (Temperature T = 600 K, Activation energy Ea = 20 kJ/mol, Molecules N = 120), watch the molecules at the top and the flash when blue A and yellow B collide and become purple C. Record "Measured" and "Predicted A·e^(−Ea/RT)" in the lower-right panel.
Move the "Temperature T" slider to 300 K, wait a few seconds, and record the shape of the speed distribution curve, "Fraction ≥ Ea" in the lower left, and "Measured" in the lower right.
Raise the temperature to 900 K and then 1200 K. Wait a few seconds each time and record "Fraction ≥ Ea", "Peak", "Area" and "Measured". Watch dots being added to the "Rate vs T (K)" graph.
Keeping 1200 K, raise "Activation energy Ea" to 40 kJ/mol and watch how the red vertical line ("v at Ea"), the shaded area and "Measured" change.
Check
With Ea = 20 kJ/mol, what was "Fraction ≥ Ea" at 300 K, 600 K, 900 K and 1200 K?→ 約0.111%、4.6%、14.8%、26.0%。 About 0.111%, 4.6%, 14.8% and 26.0%. Doubling the temperature (300 → 600 K) increases it about 40 times, and at four times (1200 K) about 230 times — much faster than proportional to temperature.
How did the speed distribution curve change as the temperature rose? What did "Area" show?→ ピークが右(高速側)へ移動し(300 Kで約408 m/s、600 Kで577 m/s、1200 Kで816 m/s)、山は低く広がった。 The peak moved right to higher speeds (about 408 m/s at 300 K, 577 m/s at 600 K, 816 m/s at 1200 K) and the curve became lower and wider. "Area" always stayed 1.000, because the total number of molecules (total fraction) does not change.
How did the "Measured" reaction count compare at 300 K and 1200 K?→ 300 Kではほぼ0回/秒で反応がほとんど止まり、生成物Cもほぼ見られなかった。 At 300 K it was almost 0 per second, the reaction nearly stopped and almost no purple C appeared. At 1200 K it was several per second (for example about 6–7 per second) with many purple C molecules. The values fluctuate randomly.
At 1200 K, what changed when Ea was raised from 20 to 40 kJ/mol?→ 赤い縦線が右(約1155 m/sから約1633 m/s)へ移り、塗りつぶし面積が小さくなって「Ea以上の割合」は26.0%から4.6%に減り、「実測」の反応数も減った。The red line moved right (from about 1155 m/s to about 1633 m/s), the shaded area shrank, "Fraction ≥ Ea" fell from 26.0% to 4.6%, and "Measured" reactions decreased.
Think further
Raising the temperature also increases the number of collisions a little, but that alone cannot explain the sharp rise in rate. The number of collisions only grows about as fast as the average speed (proportional to √T), but the fraction of collisions with energy ≥ Ea grows exponentially, like e^(−Ea/RT). In the simulation the displayed collision frequency Z never grows tens of times (it mostly fluctuates), while "Fraction ≥ Ea" increased tens of times.
Why was "Fraction ≥ Ea" the same 4.6% for Ea = 20 kJ/mol at 600 K and for Ea = 40 kJ/mol at 1200 K?→ 割合はEaとRTの比(Ea/RT)だけで決まるから。 Because the fraction depends only on the ratio Ea/RT. Both cases have the same Ea/RT (about 4.0), so the fraction is the same. The Arrhenius factor e^(−Ea/RT) also depends on Ea/RT.
Common misconceptions
Higher temperature speeds up reactions mainly because there are more collisions, so the rate is proportional to temperature." The main reason is that the fraction of molecules exceeding Ea grows exponentially, so the rate is not proportional to temperature.
At high temperature all molecules are fast and every collision reacts." Even at high temperature speeds are spread out, and collisions below Ea just bounce (even at 1200 K most collisions do not react).

Molecules move in a 2D box, while the graph shows the 3D Maxwell distribution of molecule A (threshold ½M_A v² = Ea). With few molecules, "Measured" fluctuates a lot even as a few-second average, so wait at least 5 seconds at each temperature before reading it. Product C simply turns back into A and B after a few seconds; the reverse-reaction rate and equilibrium are not modeled. The difference between "Predicted" and "Collision theory" is explained under the "Info" button (the measured rate is close to Z × fraction).
