NaCl Crystal: Formation and Melting

Students understand that in an NaCl crystal Na⁺ and Cl⁻ alternate because of electrostatic attraction (coordination number 6, ratio 1:1), that heating makes the lattice vibrations larger until the lattice breaks down into a liquid above the melting point of 1074 K, and that cooling makes it crystallize again.

Predict (before you touch anything)

When scattered Na⁺ and Cl⁻ ions come together to form a crystal, do you think ions of the same kind will end up next to each other?💡 同じ符号の電荷どうし、反対符号の電荷どうしの間にはどんな力が働くでしょうか。What force acts between charges of the same sign, and between charges of opposite sign?
If solid NaCl is heated from 300 K to 1000 K, how do you think the motion of the ions will change? Will it still be a solid?💡 NaClの融点(画面の解説に書かれている)と比べてみましょう。Compare 1000 K with the melting point of NaCl given in the on-screen explanation.

Try it

The page starts in "Forming (gas ions attract)". For about 15 seconds, watch the state label and how "Fraction crystallized" and "Nearest neighbor is the opposite ion" change, until it says "Solid (lattice)".
Press the "1000 K" button and compare "Vibration size (solid, RMS)" and "Mobility" with the values at 300 K.
Press "1300 K" and watch the state change from "Melting" to "Liquid (molten)", along with the yellow lines (tracks of two marked ions). Then press "1800 K" and read the mobility.
Press "300 K" and watch it pass through "Recrystallizing (freezing)" back to "Solid (lattice)". You may press "Pause" partway to look closely at how Na⁺ and Cl⁻ are arranged.
Change the "Starting ions" slider to 10 pairs or 200 pairs (this restarts the formation), and check that "Number of Na⁺" and "Number of Cl⁻" are always equal.

Check

How did Na⁺ and Cl⁻ differ in size on screen? What ions surrounded each ion in the crystal?→ Cl⁻(半径181 pm)はNa⁺(102 pm)の約1.8倍大きい。 Cl⁻ (radius 181 pm) is about 1.8 times larger than Na⁺ (102 pm). In the crystal, opposite ions sit above, below, left and right of each ion (4 in the slice, 6 in 3D including front and back = coordination number 6), and same-kind ions are never neighbors. In the solid, "Nearest neighbor is the opposite ion" reached 100%.
In the solid at 300 K and at 1000 K, what were the vibration size (RMS) and the mobility?→ 振動の大きさは300 Kで約14 pm、1000 Kで約24 pmと大きくなったが、どちらも状態は「固体(格子)」で、移動度は約0.00〜0.02 d²とほぼゼロのまま。 The vibration size grew from about 14 pm at 300 K to about 24 pm at 1000 K, but both were still "Solid (lattice)" and the mobility stayed almost zero (about 0.00–0.02 d²). The ions only vibrate around their fixed positions and do not move away.
What were the state and mobility at 1300 K and 1800 K?→ 1300 K(融点より+226 K)では「融解中」を経て「液体(溶融)」になり、結晶化率0%、移動度は約1 d²に急増した。 At 1300 K (226 K above the melting point) it passed through "Melting" to "Liquid (molten)", with 0% crystallized and the mobility jumping to about 1 d². At 1800 K the mobility rose further to about 1.8 d². Even in the liquid the ratio stayed 1:1, and about 80–90% of nearest neighbors were still opposite ions.
What happened when the liquid was cooled to 300 K?→ 「再結晶中(凝固)」を経て、十数秒で結晶化率100%の「固体(格子)」に戻り、移動度はほぼ0になった。It passed through "Recrystallizing (freezing)" and, within about ten to twenty seconds, returned to "Solid (lattice)" with 100% crystallized and almost zero mobility.

Think further

Why do ionic crystals such as NaCl have a high melting point (1074 K)?→ Na⁺とCl⁻が強い静電引力で多数の反対符号イオンと結びつき、格子エネルギーが大きい(NaClで約787 kJ/mol)から。 Na⁺ and Cl⁻ are held by strong electrostatic attraction to many opposite ions, so the lattice energy is large (about 787 kJ/mol for NaCl). Breaking the lattice needs thermal motion large enough for ions to leave their positions.
Solid NaCl does not conduct electricity, but molten NaCl does. Explain this using the change in mobility you saw in the simulation.→ 固体ではイオンは格子点で振動するだけで移動度がほぼ0なので、電荷を運べない。 In the solid, ions only vibrate at lattice points and the mobility is almost zero, so they cannot carry charge. When melted, the ions can move freely (mobility rises to about 1 d² or more), so under a voltage the positive and negative ions move and a current flows.

The model is a 2D slice of a 3D crystal, runs much slower than real time, and enlarges solid-state vibrations up to 2× for visibility. Because a slice lacks enough cohesion, a weak inward force keeps the melt as a dense liquid. Melting and recrystallizing take several seconds to over ten seconds, so tell students to wait a little after pressing a button.
