Radiocarbon Dating Lab
Students understand that C-14 decays exponentially with a half-life of 5730 years, so the fraction of C-14 left in a sample tells how many years have passed since the organism died, using t = (5730/ln2) × ln(N₀/N).

Predict (before you touch anything)
Let the C-14 remaining at the moment the tree was cut be 100%. If it is 50% after 5730 years, what percentage do you think will remain after another 5730 years (11,460 years in total)?💡 「毎回同じ量だけ減る」のか「毎回同じ割合で減る」のか、半減期という言葉の意味から考えましょう。Think about what "half-life" means: does the amount drop by the same amount each time, or by the same fraction each time?
Why does the C-14 in a living tree not keep decreasing?💡 木は光合成で大気から何を取り込んでいるでしょうか。What does a tree take in from the air through photosynthesis?
Try it
When the page opens, the time-travel playback toward 25% starts automatically. Watch blue particles (C-14) turn gray (N-14) at random in the sample close-up on the left, while the point on the graph at the top right moves down the exponential curve.
Press the "e.g." buttons "50%", "25%", "12.5%" and "6.25%" in turn, and record "Time passed t" and "Half-lives" in the Results Panel.
With "6.25%" selected, press "▶ Time-travel play" to replay from the moment the tree was cut (100%). Press "⏸ Pause" partway and compare "Particle count" with "C-14 remaining" (the theoretical value).
Press "1%", then drag the "① Measured C-14 remaining today" slider down to about 0.2%, and read the time passed and the formula line.
Tick "③ Hide the answer (Mission mode)", choose a percentage with the slider, work out the age, then press "Check answer" to see if you are right.
Check
What was the time passed for 50%, 25%, 12.5% and 6.25% remaining?→ それぞれ5,730年、11,460年、17,190年、22,920年(半減期の個数 1、2、3、4)。 5,730, 11,460, 17,190 and 22,920 years (1, 2, 3 and 4 half-lives). Each time the amount halves, another 5730 years is added.
Was the graph a straight line? How did the drop in percentage during the first 5730 years compare with the drop from 11,460 to 17,190 years?→ 直線ではなく、だんだん緩やかになる指数関数の曲線だった。 No, it was an exponential curve that gets flatter over time. In the first 5730 years it drops from 100% to 50% (50 points), but from 11,460 to 17,190 years only from 25% to 12.5% (12.5 points). In every 5730-year span the fraction lost (one half) is the same.
During playback, did the "Particle count" match the curve exactly?→ ほぼ曲線に沿うが、少しずれる(例:6.25%に対して26/400個=6.5%など、再生のたびに変わる)。 It followed the curve closely but not exactly (for example 26/400 = 6.5% against 6.25%, and it changes every run). Each particle decays at a random time, so the count wobbles around the theoretical value. The age shown is an exact value from the formula; the particle count is not used to calculate it.
About how much time had passed at 1% and at 0.2% remaining? About 38,070 years at 1% (6.64 half-lives) and about 51,370 years at 0.2% (about 9 half-lives). At 0.2% it warns that this is over about 50,000 years, so a reliable age is hard to get in real measurements (limit of measurement).
Think further
A piece of charcoal is measured to have 12.5% of its C-14 left. How old is it? Work it out using only the half-life, without the formula.→ 100%→50%→25%→12.5%と3回半分になっているので3半減期。 100% → 50% → 25% → 12.5% is three halvings, so 3 half-lives: 3 × 5730 = 17,190 years ago. The "12.5%" button in the simulation also shows 17,190 years.
Why can radiocarbon dating not be used to date dinosaur fossils (about 66 million years old)?→ 約5万年(約9半減期)で残存率は0.2%程度まで下がり、それ以上古いとC-14がほとんど残らず正確に測れないから。 After about 50,000 years (about 9 half-lives) only around 0.2% remains, and older samples have too little C-14 to measure accurately. 66 million years is more than 10,000 half-lives, so essentially no C-14 is left. Older ages are measured with other radioactive isotopes that have much longer half-lives.
Common misconceptions
After two half-lives, all the C-14 is gone." In fact it only halves each half-life, so 25% still remains after two half-lives (see the graph and the "25%" button).
Each atom's decay time is fixed in advance." Individual decays are random and unpredictable, but a large number of atoms together decrease according to the half-life.

The model assumes the production rate of C-14 in the atmosphere has always been constant, and does not include the calibration or sample contamination that real dating has to handle. With only 400 particles, the particle count can differ from the theory by a few percent each run; use this to discuss how single atoms are random while large numbers follow the law.
