Sliding Bar Generator – How It Works

Sliding Bar Generator – How It Works 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that a conducting bar of length L moving at speed v through a magnetic field B develops an EMF ε = BLv, and that the induced current, obeying Lenz's law, produces a magnetic force F = BIL on the bar that opposes its motion, so an external force (work) is needed to keep it moving at constant speed.

Predict (before you touch anything)

If the bar's speed is doubled, what do you think happens to the EMF? And if the bar is stopped (v = 0), do you think a current still flows?💡 回路を貫く磁束が、時間とともにどれだけの速さで変化するかを考えてみましょう。Think about how fast the magnetic flux through the circuit changes with time.
A bar carrying a current feels a force from the magnetic field. Do you think that force helps the bar's motion or opposes it?💡 もしその力が運動を助ける向きだったら、エネルギーの面で何が起こるかを想像しましょう。Imagine what would happen to energy if the force helped the motion.

Try it

With the starting settings (Flux density B 0.50 T, Bar speed v 1.0 m/s, field down ⊗), read the meters "EMF ε=BLv", "Current I=ε/R" and "Force F=BIL", and watch how the orange induced-current arrows and the red "brake" and blue "push" arrows change as the bar moves right and then left.
Change "Bar speed v" from 1.0 m/s to 2.0 m/s and record by what factor each of the three meters changes. Then set it back to 1.0 m/s.
Change "Flux density B" from 0.50 T to 1.00 T and record by what factor the EMF, current and force each change. Then set it back to 0.50 T.
Press the "Flip field N/S" button to make the field point up ⊙, and use the arrows and the explanation line under the meters to see what happens to the induced current (direction around the circuit) and to the magnetic force for the same direction of motion.
Set "Bar speed v" to 0 m/s and observe what happens to the meters and the arrows.

Check

At B = 0.50 T and v = 1.0 m/s, what were the EMF, current and force? Check them with the formulas using L = 1.0 m and R = 2 Ω.→ ε=0.500 V、I=0.2500 A、F=0.125 N でした。ε=BLv=0.50×1.0×1.0=0.50 V、I=ε/R=0.25 A、F=BIL=0.50×0.25×1.0=0.125 N ε = 0.500 V, I = 0.2500 A and F = 0.125 N. These match ε = BLv = 0.50 × 1.0 × 1.0 = 0.50 V, I = ε/R = 0.25 A and F = BIL = 0.50 × 0.25 × 1.0 = 0.125 N.
When you doubled v, and when you doubled B, by what factor did the EMF, current and force change in each case?→ v を2倍にすると ε=1.000 V、I=0.5000 A、F=0.250 N で、すべて2倍でした。 (F=B²L²v/R)。Doubling v gave ε = 1.000 V, I = 0.5000 A and F = 0.250 N, all doubled. Doubling B doubled ε and I, but F became 0.500 N, four times larger, because both B and I in F = BIL doubled (F = B²L²v/R).
With the field down ⊗, when the bar moved right, which way did the induced current go around the circuit, and which way did the magnetic force point?→ 回路の面積が増えて下向きの磁束が増加するので、電流は真上から見て反時計回り(棒の中では図の上向き)に流れ、上向きの磁場をつくって増加を妨げます。 The circuit's area grows, so the downward flux increases; the current flows counterclockwise seen from above (up the screen in the bar), making an upward field that opposes the increase. The magnetic force pointed left, opposite to the motion, acting as a brake. Both reverse when the bar moves left.
What happened when you switched the field to up ⊙, and when you set v = 0?→ 磁場を反転すると、同じ運動の向きでも誘導電流の向きが逆になりましたが、磁気力はやはり運動と逆向きのままでした。 Reversing the field reversed the induced current for the same direction of motion, but the magnetic force still pointed opposite to the motion. At v = 0 the EMF, current and force all became 0, and the display said "Bar at rest: flux does not change, so no current flows".

Think further

If the magnetic force pushed the bar along instead of opposing it, what contradiction would arise? 例えば B=0.50 T、v=1.0 m/s では Fv=0.125 W、εI=0.5×0.25=0.125 W です。The bar would speed up by itself, the current and force would grow, and energy would be created from nothing. In reality the magnetic force opposes the motion, so the external force does work at a rate Fv that equals the electrical power εI dissipated as heat in the resistor. For example, at B = 0.50 T and v = 1.0 m/s, Fv = 0.125 W and εI = 0.5 × 0.25 = 0.125 W.

The bar length L = 1.0 m and resistance R = 2 Ω are fixed, and the resistance of the rails and bar and friction are ignored. The bar moves back and forth at constant speed, reversing instantly at each end (an idealization), and the "Force F=BIL" meter shows the size of the external force that balances the magnetic force. It is worth highlighting that doubling B makes F four times larger (F = B²L²v/R), since students often expect it to double.
