Anti-Reflection (AR) Coating: Thin-Film Interference
Students understand that in an anti-reflection coating, light reflected from the top and bottom of the film cancels because of the path difference 2n1d and whether a π phase shift occurs on reflection, so that for n0 < n1 < n2 the reflection is smallest when the optical thickness n1d = λ/4.

Predict (before you touch anything)
If a thin transparent film is coated on glass, will the reflection get stronger or weaker? Does the answer depend on the film thickness?💡 膜の上面で反射する光と、膜の中を往復してから下面で反射する光の2つがあることに注目しよう。Notice that there are two reflected waves: one from the top surface of the film, and one that travels down and back through the film after reflecting at the bottom surface.
If the film's refractive index is raised to 2.0, higher than the glass (1.52), will the thickness that gives the least reflection change?💡 光が屈折率の小さい側から大きい側へ当たって反射するときだけ、位相が π ずれる。 The phase shifts by π only when light reflects off a medium with a higher refractive index. Think about what happens at the bottom surface of the film.
Try it
In the starting state (Film thickness d = 99.6 nm, Film refractive index n1 = 1.38, Test wavelength λ0 = 550 nm), read R(λ0), Bare glass R, the R(λ) graph and the "Reflected color".
Press "d=1×λ0/(4n1)", "d=2×λ0/(4n1)" and "d=3×λ0/(4n1)" in turn. Record R(λ0), the "Result" line, and whether the graph has a minimum or a maximum at 550 nm.
Press "Play (sweep thickness)" to change the thickness automatically, and watch the cross-section, the position of the dip in R(λ), and the reflected color change together. Press "Stop" to stop.
Set the "Film refractive index n1" slider to 2.00, press "d=1×λ0/(4n1)" and "d=2×λ0/(4n1)", and compare the Result and R(λ0). Then press "Best d to cancel green 550 nm" and read the suggested thickness.
Press "n1=MgF2(1.38)" to return, then set n1 to about 1.23, press "Best d to cancel green 550 nm", and check how small R(λ0) becomes.
Check
With n1 = 1.38 and d = 99.6 nm, what is the reflectance at 550 nm? How does it compare with bare glass?→ R(λ0) ≈ 1.26% で、素ガラスの約 4.26% より大きく下がる。 R(λ0) ≈ 1.26%, much lower than about 4.26% for bare glass. R(λ) has its minimum near 550 nm, and R+T shows 1.000000.
With n1 = 1.38, what happens to the reflection at 550 nm when d is 1×, 2× and 3× λ0/(4n1)?→ 1倍(約 99.6 nm)と3倍(約 298.9 nm)では R ≈ 1.26% の極小、2倍(約 199.3 nm)では R ≈ 4.26% の極大で、素ガラスと同じ値になる。 At 1× (about 99.6 nm) and 3× (about 298.9 nm), R ≈ 1.26%, a minimum. At 2× (about 199.3 nm), R ≈ 4.26%, a maximum equal to bare glass. Odd multiples give minima and even multiples give maxima.
With n1 = 2.00, what happens at d = 1× and 2× λ0/(4n1)? What is the suggested d?→ 1倍(d ≈ 68.8 nm)では R ≈ 20.2% の極大になり、2倍(d ≈ 137.5 nm)で極小になる。 At 1× (d ≈ 68.8 nm), R ≈ 20.2%, a maximum; at 2× (d ≈ 137.5 nm) it is a minimum. The suggested d is 137.5 nm from n1d = λ/2, about twice the λ/4 thickness. But even this minimum is R ≈ 4.26%, the same as bare glass, so it does not reduce reflection.
What color does the reflected light from a lens with a 99.6 nm MgF2 film look like? Explain using the graph.→ 反射色見本は薄い紫〜マゼンタになる。 The reflected color sample is a pale purple–magenta. R(λ) is lowest near green (550 nm) and a little higher at the blue and red ends, so a mix of blue and red is left.
Think further
Why do the reflections cancel at n1d = λ/4 when n1 < n2, but reinforce at λ/4 when n1 > n2?→ n1d = λ/4 のとき往復の光路差は λ/2 で、これだけで半波長ずれる。 When n1d = λ/4, the round-trip path difference is λ/2, a half-wavelength shift. If n1 < n2, both surfaces give a π shift, so those shifts cancel and only the λ/2 path difference remains, giving destructive interference. If n1 > n2, there is no π shift at the bottom, so the λ/2 path difference plus the π shift at the top puts the waves back in phase, giving constructive interference (the sign of r12 in the cross-section shows this).
The ideal index for zero reflection is about 1.23, so why do real camera lenses often use MgF2 (1.38)?→ n1 = √(n0n2) ≈ 1.23 にすると上下の反射の振幅が等しくなり R ≈ 0 になる(シミュレーションで約 0.001%)が、そのような低屈折率で丈夫な材料はほとんどない。 With n1 = √(n0n2) ≈ 1.23 the two reflected amplitudes are equal and R ≈ 0 (about 0.001% in the simulation), but almost no durable material has such a low index. MgF2 comes close, absorbs almost no visible light, is hard and easy to deposit, so it is the standard choice.
Common misconceptions
Any coating reduces reflection, whatever its thickness." At even multiples of λ0/(4n1), the reflection at that wavelength returns to the bare-glass value.
Light that is cancelled in reflection is destroyed." With no absorption, R + T = 1, so less reflection means more transmitted light.

The model assumes normal incidence, no absorption and wavelength-independent indices, and ignores reflection from the back of the glass. It includes multiple reflections, so the values differ slightly from the two-beam textbook picture, but the conditions for minima and maxima are the same. The color circle exaggerates the hue; the small square in the center is closer to the true brightness.
