Electric Potential Map: Equipotential Lines Are Contour Lines

物理 · 物理単元: 電場と電位(等電位線)Electric Potential Map: Equipotential Lines Are Contour Lines 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that if potential is pictured as terrain height, equipotential lines are contour lines, the electric field points straight downhill, and the field is strongest where contours are closest together.

Predict (before you touch anything)

If potential is drawn as terrain height, will the region around a positive charge be a hill or a valley, and what about a negative charge? Which way will a positive test charge move when released from rest?💡 正電荷に近づくほど V=kq/r がどうなるかを考えよう。Think about what happens to V = kq/r as you approach a positive charge.
At the midpoint between two equal charges of the same sign, will the field E and the potential V each be zero?💡 電場はベクトルの和、電位はスカラーの和であることを思い出そう。Recall that fields add as vectors and potentials add as scalars.

Try it

With the defaults (q₁ = +2.0, q₂ = −1.0, Distance d = 2.0), check that in "① Potential map" q₁ is a hill and q₂ a valley, and that the arrows in "② Electric field E" cross the equipotentials at right angles.
Tap the map to move the crosshair, and compare |E| in the readout near a charge (dense contours) and far away (sparse contours).
Put the crosshair on the slope of the q₁ hill and press "▶ Release test charge". Watch the path cross contours at right angles as it goes downhill toward the negative charge. Press "Drag: high" to switch to "Drag: none", release again, and compare the paths.
Press "Equal, same sign" and read V, |E|, and the "Midpoint theory V=2kq/(d/2)" value at the midpoint. Press "▶ Release test charge" there and see what happens.
Move q₂ across its range from −3 to +3 and watch hills and valleys swap. Then set the distance d to 0.5 and see how the equipotentials change shape.

Check

With "Equal, same sign" (q₁ = q₂ = +2.0, d = 2.0), what are V and |E| at the midpoint?→ |E|=0.000 だが V=+2.00+(+2.00)=+4.00 で、理論値 2kq/(d/2)=4.00 と一致する。 |E| = 0.000 but V = +2.00 + (+2.00) = +4.00, matching the theory 2kq/(d/2) = 4.00. E is zero, yet V is not.
What happens when the test charge is released at that midpoint?→ E=0 なので力を受けず静止したまま(不安定なつり合いの点)と表示される。With E = 0 it feels no force and stays still; the readout calls it an unstable equilibrium.
How do |E| and the arrow length differ between dense and sparse contours?→ 等高線が密な電荷の近くほど |E| が大きく矢印も長い。 Near the charges, where contours are dense, |E| is larger and the arrows are longer. Contours are every ΔV = 0.5, so |E| ≈ ΔV ÷ spacing.
With "Drag: high", how does the released test charge's path cross the equipotentials?→ ほぼ電界線(点線)に沿って進み、等高線と直角に交わりながら高い V から低い V(負電荷の谷)へ下る。It almost follows the dotted field line, crossing contours at right angles and going from high V down to low V (the negative-charge valley).

Think further

Why does the field point in the steepest downhill direction, perpendicular to the contours?→ E=−∇V E = −∇V: the field points where the potential drops fastest. Along a contour V does not change, so the field has no component along it and must be perpendicular to it.
Why does the path leave the field line with "Drag: none", and why is that still correct physics?→ 電場が決めるのは速度ではなく加速度(力)の向き。 The field sets the direction of acceleration (force), not velocity. Without drag, inertia keeps the particle moving, so it cannot follow a curved field line and drifts outward. Field lines show the force direction, not the particle's path.

Units are arbitrary (k = 1), and terrain height is the potential V itself (positive charges are hills, negative ones valleys). The color map compresses large V, so have students read values from the readout. The test charge obeys ma = qE − γv: "Drag: high" is overdamped motion close to a field line, and "Drag: none" includes inertia.
