Doppler Effect: Moving Observer
Students understand that when the source is at rest and the observer moves, the wavefronts stay as evenly spaced circles centered on the source, and the observer meets more or fewer wavefronts per second according to its velocity component toward the source, so f′ = f0(1 − (ds/dt)/u) and the shifts while approaching and receding are symmetric.

Predict (before you touch anything)
When an observer passes a stationary sound source at a constant speed, how do you think the heard frequency f′ changes over time? Sketch the shape of the graph you expect.💡 観測者の速度のうち「音源に向かう向きの成分」は、通過の前・最接近の瞬間・通過の後でそれぞれどうなっているでしょうか。Think about the part of the observer's velocity that points toward the source: what is it before passing, at the moment of closest approach, and after passing?
Do you think the rise in pitch while approaching the source is the same size as the drop in pitch while moving away?💡 音源が動かないとき、波面の間隔(波長)は場所によって変わるでしょうか。When the source does not move, does the spacing of the wavefronts (the wavelength) depend on where you are?
Try it
With the default settings (v_o/u = 0.50, f0 = 440 Hz, d = 120), press "Reset" and watch the top view: the wavefronts spread as evenly spaced circles centered on the source, and the observer (green dot) has a white velocity arrow and a pink "toward source" component arrow.
As the observer moves, read f′ and "ds/dt ÷ u" in the display at the upper right at the start, near "Closest", and at the end (use "Pause" to freeze it). Check that the curve in the graph below crosses the f0 line at the moment of closest approach.
Set the "d" slider to 0, press "Reset", and let the observer run to the end to see the graph shape. Then set d to 250 and compare the graph shape.
- 「v_o/u」を 0.80 に上げ、グラフの破線 f0(1+v_o/u) と f0(1−v_o/u) の位置がどう変わるかを見る。 Raise "v_o/u" to 0.80 and see how the dashed lines f0(1+v_o/u) and f0(1−v_o/u) in the graph move. Press "Play sound" to hear the actual change in pitch.
Check
With v_o/u = 0.50, f0 = 440 Hz and d = 120, what was f′ at the start, at closest approach, and at the end?→ 走り始め(1秒後)で約 650 Hz、最接近付近で約 440 Hz(ds/dt ≈ 0 なのでちょうど f0)、終わり近くで約 230 Hz。 About 650 Hz near the start (after 1 s), about 440 Hz near closest approach (exactly f0, since ds/dt ≈ 0), and about 230 Hz near the end. The display said f′ > f0 while approaching and f′ < f0 while moving away.
Were the upward and downward shifts from f0 the same size?→ 同じだった。 Yes. Far away the frequency approaches f0(1 + v_o/u) = 660 Hz and f0(1 − v_o/u) = 220 Hz, both 220 Hz away from f0. The graph is point-symmetric about the moment of closest approach.
How did the graph shape differ between d = 0 and d = 250?→ d = 0(音源の真上を通過)では 660 Hz の一定値から最接近の瞬間に一気に 220 Hz に切り替わる段差(台形)の形になった。 At d = 0 (passing straight through the source) the frequency stays at 660 Hz and then switches suddenly to 220 Hz at closest approach, a step shape. At d = 250 it became a smooth S-shaped curve. The larger d is, the more gradual the change.
While the observer was moving, did the spacing of the wavefronts in the top view change on different sides of the source?→ 変わらなかった。 No. Because the source is at rest, the wavefronts remain concentric circles with the same spacing λ = uT0 in every direction; only how often the observer meets wavefronts changes.
Think further
Why does the frequency sound higher when the observer approaches the source? Explain using the fact that the wavelength does not change.→ 観測者から見た波面の近づく速さは、音速 u に観測者が音源へ向かう速さ(−ds/dt)を加えた u − ds/dt になる。 Relative to the observer, wavefronts arrive at speed u plus the observer's speed toward the source (−ds/dt), that is u − ds/dt. Since the wavelength λ does not change, the number of wavefronts met per second becomes f′ = (u − ds/dt)/λ = f0(1 − (ds/dt)/u), which is larger. Moving away, it is smaller.
Compared with a moving source (f′ = f0 u/(u ∓ v)), how is the result of this simulation different?→ 音源が動く場合は波面そのものが前方で詰まり後方で広がるため、近づくときの上昇の方が遠ざかるときの下降より大きい非対称になる。 With a moving source the wavefronts themselves bunch up in front and spread out behind, so the rise while approaching is larger than the drop while receding (asymmetric). With a moving observer the wavefronts do not change, and f′ shifts up and down by the same amount in proportion to v_o (symmetric). Even at the same speed, the result depends on which one moves.
Common misconceptions
If the observer moves, the wavelength of the sound changes." If the source is at rest, the wavefronts stay as evenly spaced circles; only the rate at which the observer meets them changes.
The pitch drops suddenly at the moment of passing." Except when passing straight through (d = 0), f′ crosses f0 smoothly at closest approach and falls gradually.

Wavefronts on screen are drawn with the frequency slowed by a factor of 400 (time stretched 400 times), and lengths are in arbitrary screen units. The ratios v_o/u and f′/f0 match reality, so have students reason with ratios. The speed of sound u is fixed and wind is not modeled. "Play sound" plays f′ at its actual pitch.
