Spring Oscillator Race
Students understand that the period of a spring oscillator in simple harmonic motion is T = 2π√(m/k): it is longer for a larger mass, shorter for a stiffer spring, and independent of amplitude (isochronism).

Predict (before you touch anything)
Carts of 0.50 kg and 1.00 kg are attached to identical springs (k = 20 N/m) and released together. If the mass is doubled, by what factor do you think the time for one round trip (the period) changes?💡 重いほど動かしにくいが、周期が質量に「比例」するとは限らない。 A heavier cart is harder to accelerate, but that does not mean the period is simply proportional to the mass. Look at the form of the formula for T.
If the amplitude (how far it swings) is made larger, do you think the period gets longer, shorter, or stays the same?💡 振幅を大きくすると進む距離は長くなるが、ばねが引きもどす力 F = −kx も大きくなる。A larger amplitude means a longer distance to travel, but the restoring force F = −kx also becomes larger.
Try it
Watch the race in its starting state (#1: 0.50 kg, 20 N/m; #2: 1.00 kg, 20 N/m; #3: 0.50 kg, 50 N/m; #4: 2.00 kg, 10 N/m), and read the order and T theory / T meas. in the “Period comparison (theory vs. zero-crossing measurement)” table and the “Race record”.
Compare T theory for #1 and #2 (same k, m doubled) and for #1 and #3 (same m, k 2.5 times).
Press the “#4” button to select it and raise the “Spring constant k (selected)” slider from 10 to 40 N/m. Check that the cart's motion continues smoothly and that #4's period becomes the same as #2's.
Change “Amplitude A (same for all)” from 0.20 m to 0.05 m and compare T meas. in the table, the integration strip at the bottom of the canvas (solid line A, dashed line A/2) and the “Isochronism check” values.
If needed, lower “Simulation speed” to about 0.25× and press “Reset (t=0)” to see each cart start from rest at x = +A (the right end).
Check
What are the periods of #1 (0.50 kg) and #2 (1.00 kg), and what is their ratio?→ #1 は約 0.993 s、#2 は約 1.405 s で、約 1.41 倍(√2 倍)。 #1 is about 0.993 s and #2 is about 1.405 s, a ratio of about 1.41 (√2). Doubling the mass makes the period √2 times longer, not twice as long.
What happens to the period when the spring constant increases? Check with #1 and #3.→ 短くなる。 It gets shorter. #1 with k = 20 N/m has about 0.993 s and #3 with k = 50 N/m has about 0.628 s, so #3 always finishes first in the race.
When #4 was set to 2.00 kg and 40 N/m, what was its period, and why?→ 約 1.405 s で #2(1.00 kg・20 N/m)と同じになった。 About 1.405 s, the same as #2 (1.00 kg, 20 N/m). Both have the same m/k = 0.05, so T = 2π√(m/k) is the same.
When the amplitude was changed from 0.20 m to 0.05 m, what happened to the period?→ 変わらなかった。 It did not change. T meas. stayed equal to the theoretical value, and the isochronism check also showed the same period for A and A/2 (differences only about 10⁻¹² s, rounding error).
Think further
Why does the period stay the same even though a larger amplitude means a longer distance to travel?→ 復元力 F = −kx が変位に比例するため、振幅を2倍にすると各位置での力と加速度も2倍になり、速さも全体に2倍になる。 Because the restoring force F = −kx is proportional to the displacement, doubling the amplitude doubles the force and acceleration at corresponding points, so the speed is doubled everywhere. Twice the distance at twice the speed takes the same time.
The period of a spring oscillator can be used to measure mass (for example, “weighing” astronauts on a space station). Why does the period tell us the mass?→ T = 2π√(m/k) From T = 2π√(m/k), m = kT²/(4π²), so if k is known, measuring T gives the mass. The formula does not contain g, so it works even in weightlessness.
Common misconceptions
The bigger the swing, the longer one round trip takes. → The period of a spring oscillator does not depend on amplitude (isochronism).
Doubling the mass doubles the period. → The period is proportional to √m, so doubling the mass makes it about 1.41 times longer.

The carts are frictionless and horizontal, and the spring's mass is ignored. The carts follow the exact solution x(t) = A cos(2πt/T), while the integration strip at the bottom of the canvas integrates F = −kx numerically with RK4, so students can confirm the formula from their agreement. When m or k is changed mid-run, the phase is carried over to the new period, and a period spanning the change is not measured (measuring restarts with the next full period).
