Coins on a Slippery Turntable

Coins on a Slippery Turntable 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that for a coin on a turntable, static friction supplies the centripetal force, and when the required force mω²r exceeds the maximum static friction μmg (ω > √(μg/r)) the coin slips and, by inertia, moves off almost in a straight line along the tangent.

Predict (before you touch anything)

Coins are placed near, midway and far from the center of a turntable, and the rotation is gradually sped up. Which coin do you think slips first?💡 同じ角速度で回るとき、外側のコインと内側のコインでは1回転で進む距離(速さ)が違う。 At the same angular speed, inner and outer coins travel different distances per turn (different speeds). What does that mean for the force needed to keep each one moving in a circle?
Once a coin starts to slip, how do you think it moves as seen from the table? And as seen from above (the ground frame)?💡 滑った瞬間、コインを中心に引っぱっていた力はどうなるか。 At the moment it slips, what happens to the force that was pulling the coin toward the center? How does an object move when no net force acts on it?

Try it

With the defaults (Angular speed ω 2.00 rad/s, Static friction μ 0.30, Mass m 0.050 kg), press “Start” and compare F_req and F_max in the table and on each coin's bar.
Press “Ramp up ω” to raise ω slowly. Watch the coins slip in the order C → B → A and read the “started slipping at ω=… rad/s” record shown under the table.
Look at the dashed path and velocity arrow of a slipping coin: does it keep turning with the table, and which way does it go?
Press “Reset”, set ω back to 2.00 rad/s, then set “Mass m” to 0.100 kg and later “Static friction μ” to 0.60, comparing how F_req, F_max and ω_c=√(μg/r) in the table change.
Drag a coin to change its radius and check how its F_req value and ω_c change.

Check

  1. μ = 0.30 で ω をゆっくり上げたとき、A(r = 0.20 m)、B(r = 0.35 m)、C(r = 0.50 m)はそれぞれ何 rad/s で滑り始めましたか。With μ = 0.30 and ω raised slowly, at what ω did A (r = 0.20 m), B (r = 0.35 m) and C (r = 0.50 m) start to slip?→ C が約 2.42 rad/s、B が約 2.90 rad/s、A が約 3.83 rad/s で、外側のコインほど先に滑った。 C at about 2.42 rad/s, B at about 2.90 rad/s and A at about 3.83 rad/s: the farther out, the sooner it slipped. Each matches √(μg/r).
At ω = 2.00 rad/s, how many times A's F_req is C's? What happens to F_req if ω is doubled?→ A が 0.040 N、C が 0.100 N で、半径に比例して 2.5 倍。 A is 0.040 N and C is 0.100 N, 2.5 times, in proportion to the radius. Since F_req = mω²r, doubling ω makes it 4 times larger.
When the mass m changes from 0.050 kg to 0.100 kg, what happens to F_req, F_max and the slipping angular speed ω_c?→ F_req も F_max(0.147 N → 0.294 N)も 2 倍になるが、ω_c(A 3.83、B 2.90、C 2.42 rad/s)は変わらない。Both F_req and F_max (0.147 N → 0.294 N) double, but ω_c (A 3.83, B 2.90, C 2.42 rad/s) does not change.
How did a coin move after it started to slip?→ 滑った瞬間の接線方向にほぼまっすぐ進み、台と一緒には回らず、中心にも引き込まれずに台の外へ出ていった。It moved almost straight along the tangent at the moment of slipping, did not keep turning with the table, was not pulled toward the center, and left the table.

Think further

Why does the slipping angular speed not depend on mass, and why is it smaller for larger radii?→ 滑らない条件は mω²r ≤ μmg で、両辺の m が約分されて ω²r ≤ μg となるから。 The no-slip condition is mω²r ≤ μmg; m cancels, leaving ω²r ≤ μg. The required centripetal force grows with r, but the friction limit μmg does not depend on r, so a larger r exceeds the limit at a smaller ω.
Using this simulation, explain why a car must slow down on a curve when the road is wet and slippery.→ 車の向心力もタイヤと路面の静止摩擦が供給している。 A car's centripetal force is also supplied by static friction between the tires and the road. Rain lowers μ, so F_max = μmg becomes smaller and can no longer supply the mv²/r needed at the same speed; the car must slow down to reduce the required centripetal force.

The model uses g = 9.8 m/s² and assumes ω changes slowly, ignoring tangential friction. After slipping, the coin slows a little by kinetic friction, using a simplified assumption μ_k = 0.04μ, which is smaller than real kinetic friction. “Ramp up ω” makes ω_c easy to read; if ω is raised suddenly with the slider, the recorded slipping ω will be larger than ω_c.
