2D Billiard Scattering: Oblique Collisions and Restitution

物理 · 物理単元: 運動量保存と衝突(反発係数)2D Billiard Scattering: Oblique Collisions and Restitution 目安 25分about 25 min
Students understand that in an oblique collision on a plane, momentum is conserved as a vector (in both x and y), that after an elastic collision (e = 1) of equal masses the two velocities are perpendicular, and that for e < 1 the angle between them is less than 90° and kinetic energy decreases.

Predict (before you touch anything)

Disc A hits an identical disc B at rest, slightly off its centre (e = 1). In which directions do you think A and B move afterwards? Predict the angle between their two directions.💡 ビリヤードで手球を的球に薄く当てたとき、2つの球がどう分かれるかを思い出してみましょう。Recall how the cue ball and the target ball separate in billiards when you make a thin hit.
When the collision is oblique, do you think the total momentum, which was only sideways (x direction) at first, gains an up-down (y) component?💡 A Think about the forces A and B exert on each other (action and reaction).

With the defaults (Impact offset b = 0.50R, Coefficient of restitution e = 1.00, Incoming speed v = 0.60 m/s), press "Shoot" and use the trails and arrows to see where A and B go after the collision. Record Σpx, Σpy and Total KE in the "Before" and "After" rows, and the "Angle between A' and B'" θ.
Press "Reset", set Impact offset b to 0.20R and then to 0.90R, pressing "Shoot" each time. Compare the speeds and angles of A' and B', and θ.
Set b = 0.00R (head-on) and press "Shoot", and watch how A and B move.
Set b back to 0.50R, then set Coefficient of restitution e to 0.50 and then to 0, pressing "Shoot" each time. Check θ, Total KE and its Change, and the momentum diagram at lower left (dotted = total p before, red = pA', blue = pB').

Check

With b = 0.50R and e = 1, what were the velocities of A and B after the collision and the angle between them?→ A' は 0.15 m/s(75.5°)、B' は 0.58 m/s(−14.5°)で、なす角 θ = 90.0°(直交)だった。 A' was 0.15 m/s (75.5°) and B' was 0.58 m/s (−14.5°), with θ = 90.0° (perpendicular). θ was also 90.0° for b = 0.20R and b = 0.90R.
How did Σpx and Σpy change across the collision? What about with e = 0.50 or e = 0?→ どの場合も Σpx = 0.60 → 0.60 kg·m/s、Σpy = 0.00 → 0.00 kg·m/s で変化は 0.00 だった。 In every case Σpx stayed 0.60 → 0.60 kg·m/s and Σpy stayed 0.00 → 0.00 kg·m/s, with a change of 0.00. Even for e < 1 momentum is conserved as a vector, and in the lower-left diagram pA' and pB' joined tip to tail match the total p before (dotted).
With b = 0.50R, what were Total KE and θ for e = 1.00, 0.50 and 0?→ e = 1.00 では総KE 0.18 J → 0.18 J(100 %)、θ = 90.0°。 For e = 1.00, Total KE went 0.18 J → 0.18 J (100 %) and θ = 90.0°. For e = 0.50, 0.18 J → 0.12 J (65 %) and θ = 45.9°. For e = 0, 0.18 J → 0.10 J (53 %) and θ = 27.3°. The smaller e, the more kinetic energy is lost and the smaller θ becomes.
What happened with b = 0.00R (head-on)?→ A' = 0.00 m/s(停止)、B' = 0.60 m/s(0.0°)となり、A が止まって B だけが法線方向(まっすぐ前)へ進んだ。 A' = 0.00 m/s (stopped) and B' = 0.60 m/s (0.0°): A stopped and only B moved off along the normal (straight ahead). This is the same as the 1D result where equal masses swap velocities in an elastic collision.

Think further

Why are the two velocities always perpendicular after an elastic collision of equal masses? Explain using conservation of momentum and of energy.→ 運動量保存から v = vA' + vB'(ベクトル)、運動エネルギー保存から v² = vA'² + vB'² が成り立つ。 Momentum conservation gives v = vA' + vB' (as vectors), and kinetic energy conservation gives v² = vA'² + vB'². Squaring the first gives v² = vA'² + vB'² + 2 vA'·vB', so 2 vA'·vB' = 0: vA' and vB' are perpendicular (a Pythagorean relation).
With b = 0.50R, B' stayed at −14.5° whatever e was. With no friction, the only force on B from A acts along the normal at the contact point (the line joining the centres). B, initially at rest, moves off in that direction. The normal direction depends only on the centre distance 2R and the offset b (sin 14.5° ≈ 0.5R/2R); e changes only the speed.

Both discs have the same mass m = 1.00 kg and radius R = 0.10 m; friction and spin are ignored (the tangential velocity is kept unchanged). The offset b only ranges from −R to +R, so B's direction is at most 30° from the incoming line. You may add that in real billiards ball spin and friction with the table make θ differ slightly from 90°.
