Subduction Zone Animation
Students understand that an oceanic plate formed at a mid-ocean ridge sinks beneath a continental plate at a trench, that earthquake foci lie along the sinking plate, and that volcanoes (a volcanic arc) form above where the plate reaches a depth of a little over 100 km, so they line up some distance inland from the trench.

Predict (before you touch anything)
Do you think the volcanoes of Japan are located right above the Japan Trench, or some distance away from it?💡 マグマができるには、沈み込んだプレートがある程度の深さまで達する必要があります。For magma to form, the sinking plate has to reach a certain depth.
If the plate sinks at a steeper angle, do you think the volcanoes will be closer to the trench or farther from it?💡 傾きの違う坂を下りて、同じ深さに着くまでに進む横の距離を考えてみましょう。Imagine walking down slopes of different steepness: how far do you travel sideways before reaching the same depth?
Try it
Play with the starting settings (Plate speed 5 cm/yr, Dip angle 35°) and watch the stripes of the oceanic plate (blue) move from the mid-ocean ridge toward the trench and sink under the continental plate (brown) at the trench, keeping the same thickness.
Stop with "■ Pause" and look at where the red earthquake foci are located, and where the "Volcanic arc", "Magma chamber" and "Water → melting" labels are, using the depth scale on the right edge.
Move the "Dip angle" slider to 20°, 35° and 60°, and record the value in "Volcanic arc ○ km from trench" at the bottom of the canvas, along with how the slab and the earthquake foci change.
Return the dip angle to 35°, press "↺ Reset", then set "Plate speed" to 1 cm/yr and to 10 cm/yr, playing a few seconds each time, and compare how fast the stripes move and how quickly "Subducted" increases.
Check
How are the earthquake foci (red dots) distributed?→ 海溝付近の浅いところに多く、そこから沈み込むプレート(スラブ)に沿って大陸側に向かうほど深くなるように並ぶ。深さ数百 km(目盛りで 600〜700 km 付近)まで分布するが、深いほどまばらになる。They are most numerous at shallow depths near the trench, and from there they follow the sinking plate (slab), getting deeper toward the continent. They reach depths of several hundred kilometers (around 600–700 km on the scale), becoming sparser as depth increases.
Where does the volcanic arc form? Is it directly above the trench?→ 海溝の真上ではなく、海溝から陸側に離れた位置(沈み込み角 35° で約 139 km)にできる。 Not above the trench, but some distance inland from it (about 139 km at a dip angle of 35°). It lies above the place where the top of the sinking plate reaches a depth of about 100–150 km.
At dip angles of 20°, 35° and 60°, how far was the volcanic arc from the trench?→ 20° で約 247 km、35° で約 139 km、60° で約 98 km。 About 247 km at 20°, about 139 km at 35°, and about 98 km at 60°. The steeper the subduction, the closer the arc is to the trench, and the line of earthquake foci also becomes steeper.
With Plate speed at 1 cm/yr and at 10 cm/yr, how did the amount subducted in the same elapsed time compare?→ 10 cm/年 では縞模様が速く動き、沈み込み量は 1 cm/年 の10倍になる(例:約303万年で約30 km と約303 km)。 At 10 cm/yr the stripes move faster, and the amount subducted is ten times that at 1 cm/yr (for example, about 30 km versus about 303 km after about 3.0 million years). The elapsed time advances at the same rate in both cases.
Think further
Why does the volcanic arc move closer to the trench when the dip angle becomes steeper?→ マグマはプレート上面が深さ約 100〜150 km に達した場所でできる。 Magma forms where the top of the plate reaches a depth of about 100–150 km. A steeply sinking plate reaches that depth within a shorter horizontal distance, so the arc above it is closer to the trench.
Beneath the Tohoku region of Japan, earthquake foci get deeper from the Pacific side toward the Sea of Japan side. Explain this using the simulation.→ 太平洋プレートが日本海溝から西へ、斜めに沈み込んでいるため。 The Pacific Plate sinks westward at an angle from the Japan Trench. Earthquakes occur along the sinking plate, so the farther from the trench (the Pacific side), the deeper they are.
Common misconceptions
Volcanoes form right on top of the trench (the plate boundary)." In fact they form above where the sinking plate reaches a certain depth, and line up more than 100 km inland from the trench.
Magma is made by the sinking plate itself melting." Water released from the plate lowers the melting temperature of the mantle above it, and part of that mantle melts to form magma.

The cross-section is schematic; ocean depth and surface relief are vertically exaggerated for visibility. After bending at the trench, the slab is drawn as a straight plate at a fixed angle down to 700 km, and the volcanic arc is placed above the point where the slab top is about 125 km deep. "Plate speed" changes how fast the slab moves and how much is subducted, but the time readout always advances at the same rate (about 1 million years per second).
