波形は進む、粒子は動かない:弦を伝わる横波The Wave Moves, the Particles Don’t: Transverse Waves on a String
ねらいGoal:弦を伝わる横波では、波形は一定の速さ v で右へ進むが、各粒子はその場で上下に単振動するだけであり、粒子の y-t グラフは周期 T = 1/f の正弦波になること、波長は λ = v/f で決まることを理解する。Students understand that in a transverse wave on a string the wave shape moves right at a constant speed v while each particle only oscillates up and down in place, that a particle's y-t graph is a sine curve with period T = 1/f, and that the wavelength is given by λ = v/f.

1予想しよう(触る前に)Predict (before you touch anything)
- オレンジの注目粒子は、波の山に乗って右へ運ばれていくだろうか。それともその場で動くだろうか。Will the orange marked particle ride on a crest and be carried to the right, or will it move in place?💡 なわとびのロープを上下にゆらしたとき、ロープの一点がどう動くか想像しよう。Imagine shaking a jump rope up and down: how does one point on the rope move?
- 注目粒子が最も速く動くのは、山(谷)の位置にいるときか、まん中(平衡位置)を通るときか。Does the marked particle move fastest when it is at a crest (or trough), or when it passes through the middle (its equilibrium position)?💡 ブランコがどこで一瞬止まり、どこで一番速いかを思い出そう。Think about where a swing stops for an instant and where it moves fastest.
2動かしてみようTry it
- 初期値(振動数 f = 1.00 Hz、波の速さ v = 60 cm/s)のまま、上の弦で山の印が右へ進むようすと、x = 40 cm のオレンジの注目粒子の動き、赤い速度の矢印を見る。With the starting values (Frequency f = 1.00 Hz, Wave speed v = 60 cm/s), watch the crest marker moving right on the string, the orange marked particle at x = 40 cm, and its red velocity arrow.
- 下の「注目粒子の y-t グラフ」を見て、山から次の山までの時間(周期 T の印)と、パネルの T = 1 / f の値を比べる。必要なら「一時停止」で止めて読む。Look at the "y-t graph of the marked particle" below and compare the time from one peak to the next (the "Period T" marker) with T = 1 / f in the panel. Press "Pause" to read it if needed.
- 振動数 f を 2.00 Hz にして、λ の表示と弦の上の λ の印、y-t グラフの山の間隔の変化を見る。Set Frequency f to 2.00 Hz and watch how the λ value, the λ bracket on the string, and the spacing of peaks on the y-t graph change.
- 振動数 f を 1.00 Hz に戻し、波の速さ v を 120 cm/s にして、λ と T がどう変わるかを見る。Set Frequency f back to 1.00 Hz, set Wave speed v to 120 cm/s, and see how λ and T change.
3確かめようCheck
- 注目粒子の x 座標は変わったか。どの向きに動いていたか。Did the x-position of the marked particle change? In which direction did it move?→ x = 40 cm のまま変わらず、上下(y 方向)にだけ振動していた。山の印は右へ進んでいくが、粒子は山に乗って運ばれない。It stayed at x = 40 cm and oscillated only up and down (in the y direction). The crest marker moves right, but the particle is not carried along with it.
- f = 1.00 Hz、v = 60 cm/s のときの波長と周期はいくらか。y-t グラフで周期を確かめられるか。At f = 1.00 Hz and v = 60 cm/s, what are the wavelength and the period? Can you confirm the period on the y-t graph?→ λ = 60.0 cm、T = 1.00 s。y-t グラフでは山から次の山までがちょうど 1 s(目盛り 1 つ分)になっている。λ = 60.0 cm and T = 1.00 s. On the y-t graph, one peak to the next is exactly 1 s (one grid interval).
- 注目粒子が山や谷にいるとき、赤い速度の矢印はどうなっていたか。y-t グラフの傾きとどう対応するか。What did the red velocity arrow look like when the particle was at a crest or trough? How does this match the slope of the y-t graph?→ 山や谷では矢印がほぼ消え(速さ 0、一瞬止まる)、平衡位置(y = 0)を通るときに最も長くなる。y-t グラフでも山・谷で傾きが 0、y = 0 を横切るところで傾きが最も急になっている。At a crest or trough the arrow almost disappears (speed 0, a momentary stop), and it is longest when the particle passes the equilibrium position (y = 0). On the y-t graph the slope is zero at the peaks and troughs and steepest where the curve crosses y = 0.
- f を 2.00 Hz にしたとき、また v を 120 cm/s にしたとき、λ はそれぞれいくらになったか。What was λ when f was set to 2.00 Hz, and when v was set to 120 cm/s?→ f = 2.00 Hz(v = 60 cm/s)では λ = 30.0 cm、T = 0.50 s で、波長が短くなった。f = 1.00 Hz、v = 120 cm/s では λ = 120.0 cm で長くなり、T は 1.00 s のまま。どちらも λ = v/f が成り立つ。At f = 2.00 Hz (v = 60 cm/s), λ = 30.0 cm and T = 0.50 s, so the wavelength got shorter. At f = 1.00 Hz and v = 120 cm/s, λ = 120.0 cm, longer, while T stayed 1.00 s. In both cases λ = v/f holds.
4考えようThink further
- 波形の y-x グラフ(上の弦)と注目粒子の y-t グラフ(下)は形が似ている。2 つのグラフの横軸と、山の間隔が表す量の違いを説明しよう。The y-x picture of the string (top) and the y-t graph of the marked particle (bottom) look similar. Explain how their horizontal axes differ and what the spacing between peaks means in each.→ 上の y-x グラフはある瞬間の弦全体の形で、横軸は位置 x、山の間隔は波長 λ。下の y-t グラフは 1 つの粒子の時間変化で、横軸は時間 t、山の間隔は周期 T。波は 1 周期 T の間に 1 波長 λ 進むので v = λ/T = fλ となる。The top y-x picture is the shape of the whole string at one instant; its horizontal axis is position x and the peak spacing is the wavelength λ. The bottom y-t graph is one particle over time; its horizontal axis is time t and the peak spacing is the period T. The wave travels one wavelength λ in one period T, so v = λ/T = fλ.
- 波が進んでも粒子が運ばれないなら、波は何を伝えているのか。If the particles are not carried along, what does the wave actually transfer?→ 振動の状態(波形)とエネルギーを伝えている。左の粒子の振動が順に右の粒子へ少し遅れて伝わることで、山の位置が右へ移っていく。It transfers the state of vibration (the wave shape) and energy. Each particle's vibration is passed on to the particle to its right a little later, so the position of the crest moves right.
よくある誤解Common misconceptions
- 弦の粒子は波の山に乗って右へ運ばれる、という誤解。粒子はそれぞれの平衡位置で上下に振動するだけで、進むのは波形である。The idea that particles of the string ride on the crests and are carried to the right. Each particle only oscillates up and down around its own equilibrium position; it is the wave shape that travels.
- 粒子は山の位置で最も速く動いている、という誤解。山や谷では速さが 0 になり、平衡位置を通るときが最も速い。The idea that a particle moves fastest at a crest. At crests and troughs its speed is zero; it is fastest when passing through the equilibrium position.

Idealized model: particles every 2 cm along a 120 cm view of the string carry a sine wave of amplitude 3 cm with no damping or reflection, and the vertical displacement is drawn enlarged for visibility. f and v can be set independently; it is worth adding that on a real string v is set by the tension and linear density, so changing the frequency does not change v. When λ exceeds 120 cm (e.g. v = 200 cm/s and f = 0.50 Hz give λ = 400.0 cm), a full wavelength does not fit on the screen.
