How Waves Travel (Transverse and Longitudinal)

物理基礎 · 物理単元: 波の伝わり方(横波・縦波)How Waves Travel (Transverse and Longitudinal) 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that in a wave the particles of the medium only vibrate around their equilibrium positions while only the wave shape (the state of vibration) travels, that transverse and longitudinal waves differ in the direction of vibration, and that wavelength, frequency and speed are related by λ = v/f.

Predict (before you touch anything)

As the wave travels to the right (+x direction), will the red reference particle be carried to the right along with the wave?💡 スタジアムのウェーブで、観客一人ひとりがどう動いているかを思い出そう。Think about a stadium wave: how does each person in the crowd actually move?
If only the frequency f is increased while the wave speed v stays the same, what happens to the wavelength λ?💡 1 秒間に送り出される波の数と、波が 1 秒間に進む距離の関係を考えよう。Think about how many waves are sent out each second and how far the wave travels in one second.

Try it

Watch the motion with the starting values (Amplitude A = 0.15 m, Frequency f = 0.80 Hz, Wave speed v = 3.0 m/s). In both the upper transverse wave and the lower longitudinal wave, follow the red reference particle and its faint equilibrium mark.
Press "Pause" and compare where the compressions and rarefactions are in the longitudinal wave with the shape of the transverse wave above and the spacing of the particles. Press "Play" to continue.
Set Frequency f to 1.50 Hz and watch how λ = v/f and the green λ arrow change. Then set f back to 0.80 Hz, set Wave speed v to 6.0 m/s, and check λ.
Set Frequency f to 0.50 Hz (T = 2.00 s) and press "Reset to t = 0". Using the t display, measure how long it takes one crest (orange marker) to reach the position of the next crest.
Change Amplitude A from 0.05 m to 0.20 m and see whether λ or T changes, and how far the particles swing.

Check

In which direction did the red reference particle move in the transverse wave and in the longitudinal wave? Was it carried to the right by the wave?→ 横波では上下(波の進む向きに垂直)、縦波では左右(進む向きに平行)に振動するだけで、平衡位置の印から離れて流されることはない。 In the transverse wave it moves only up and down (perpendicular to the direction of travel), and in the longitudinal wave only left and right (parallel to it). It never drifts away from its equilibrium mark; only the wave shape travels.
In the longitudinal wave, do compressions form where the particle displacement is largest?→ いいえ。 No. Compressions and rarefactions form at particles with zero displacement, where the neighbours move toward them (compression) or away (rarefaction). Around the particles with the largest displacement, the spacing is close to normal.
With v = 3.0 m/s, what did λ become when f was changed from 0.80 Hz to 1.50 Hz? What about v = 6.0 m/s and f = 0.80 Hz?→ f = 1.50 Hz で λ = 2.00 m(3.75 m から短くなる)。 At f = 1.50 Hz, λ = 2.00 m (shorter than 3.75 m). At v = 6.0 m/s and f = 0.80 Hz, λ = 7.50 m, longer than the 6 m screen. Both match λ = v/f.
With f = 0.50 Hz, how many seconds did it take a crest to reach the next crest's position? Did λ or T change when the amplitude A was changed?→ 約 2.0 s(周期 T = 1/f = 2.00 s)。 About 2.0 s (period T = 1/f = 2.00 s). In one period the wave moves exactly one wavelength λ. Changing A does not change λ or T; only the size of the particles' swing changes.

Think further

Is sound travelling through air a transverse or a longitudinal wave? Explain using the compressions and rarefactions in the simulation.→ 縦波。 Longitudinal. Air molecules vibrate back and forth along the direction the sound travels, so alternating dense regions (compressions) and thin regions (rarefactions) move along. The molecules themselves are not carried from the source to the ear.
In the same medium (same v), what happens to the wavelength when the frequency f is doubled? Explain with the equation.→ λ = v/f From λ = v/f, if v is constant then λ is inversely proportional to f, so it is halved. Twice as many waves are sent out each second, and twice as many fit into the same distance v.

Idealized model: 81 particles along a 6 m medium carry a sine wave y = A sin 2π(f t − x/λ) travelling in the +x direction without damping or reflection. In the transverse picture only the displacement (vertical direction) is enlarged (the scale is shown in the picture; ×3.0 on a wide screen); the longitudinal wave is at true scale. When f is changed, the origin of t is reset so the wave stays continuous, so the t display may jump.
