Incline Lab: When Does a Block Start to Slide?

Incline Lab: When Does a Block Start to Slide? 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that while a block rests on a slope the static friction balances f = mg sinθ, and that once tanθ exceeds the static friction coefficient μs the block slides, friction drops to the kinetic value μk mg cosθ, and it moves with constant acceleration a = g(sinθ − μk cosθ).

The slope angle is raised little by little from 0°. While the block is still at rest, how does the size of the friction force change? Does it stay equal to the maximum static friction the whole time?💡 静止しているとき、斜面に平行な方向の力のつり合いを考えよう。When the block is at rest, think about the balance of forces parallel to the slope.
At the moment the block starts to slide, does the friction force get larger, smaller, or stay the same?💡 重い家具を押すとき、動き出す前と動き出した後で必要な力の感じを思い出そう。Recall pushing a heavy piece of furniture: compare how hard you must push before and after it starts moving.

Press "Reset" and set Slope angle θ to 20° (Kinetic friction coefficient μk = 0.40, Static friction coefficient μs = 0.60). In the values panel, record "Friction now f", "mg sinθ" and "Max static friction μs mg cosθ".
Press "Tilt slowly". θ rises little by little from 0° and stops the moment the block starts to slide. Watch the blue dots on the f–θ graph, the angle where sliding begins, and the red message showing how f and a change.
While the block is sliding, lower Slope angle θ to 15° and watch how "State", Acceleration a and Velocity v change.
Press "Reset", set Kinetic friction coefficient μk to 0.20 (μs stays 0.60), and press "Tilt slowly" again. Compare the slipping angle and f and a after slipping with step 2.
Change Static friction coefficient μs and see how "Critical angle θc = arctan μs" changes.

Check

At θ = 20° with the block at rest, what is the friction force f? Is it equal to the maximum static friction?→ f ≈ 3.35 N で、mg sinθ と同じ値。 f ≈ 3.35 N, the same as mg sinθ. It is smaller than the max static friction μs mg cosθ ≈ 5.53 N. Static friction is only as large as needed; it is not always at its maximum.
With μs = 0.60, at what angle did the block start to slide? How is this related to tanθ?→ 約 31.0°(境界角 θc = arctan 0.60 ≈ 30.96°)。 About 31.0° (critical angle θc = arctan 0.60 ≈ 30.96°). There tanθ = 0.60 = μs; the block slides once tanθ exceeds μs.
At the moment of slipping (μk = 0.40), how did the friction f and the acceleration a change?→ f は約 5.04 N から約 3.36 N(μk mg cosθ)へ段差状に下がり、a は 0 から約 1.68 m/s² になった。 f dropped in a step from about 5.04 N to about 3.36 N (μk mg cosθ), and a went from 0 to about 1.68 m/s². On the graph the point drops straight down from the end of the blue line to a red dot.
What happened when θ was lowered to 15° while the block was sliding?→ 加速度が約 −1.25 m/s² の負の値になって減速し、やがて停止して「静止」に戻った。 The acceleration became negative (about −1.25 m/s²), the block slowed down, stopped, and the state returned to "At rest". Since tan15° ≈ 0.27 is smaller than μk = 0.40, kinetic friction is larger than mg sinθ. After stopping, friction goes back to mg sinθ ≈ 2.54 N.

Think further

Does the angle at which the block starts to slide depend on its mass m? Explain using the equations.→ 変わらない。 No. In the slipping condition mg sinθ > μs mg cosθ, mg cancels on both sides, giving tanθ > μs, which depends on neither m nor g. (In this simulation m is fixed at 1.0 kg.)
When μk was changed from 0.40 to 0.20, the block still slipped at about 31°, but the acceleration afterwards was larger. The slipping angle depends only on μs, but while sliding the friction is μk mg cosθ. A smaller μk gives a smaller friction (about 1.68 N) and a larger net force mg sinθ − f, so a = g(sinθ − μk cosθ) becomes larger, about 3.36 m/s².

This is an idealized model: m = 1.0 kg and g = 9.8 m/s² are fixed, and the friction coefficients are constants independent of speed (μs ≥ μk is enforced by the sliders). "Tilt slowly" raises θ from 0° at about 4° per second and stops automatically when the block slips. Setting μs = μk removes the step, and the acceleration just after slipping is then almost zero, which is useful for comparison.
