Prograde and Retrograde Motion of Planets
Students understand that an outer planet usually moves west to east among the stars (prograde) but appears to move back east to west around opposition (retrograde) because Earth, orbiting faster on the inside, overtakes it and changes our line of sight, and that retrograde motion repeats once every synodic period.

Predict (before you touch anything)
Planets always orbit the Sun in the same direction, yet seen from Earth there are times when a planet seems to move backward among the stars. Why do you think that happens?💡 地球も動いています。 Earth is moving too. When you overtake a slower car on a highway, which way does that car seem to move against the distant mountains?
Of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, which do you think shows the largest retrograde loop (in degrees)?💡 地球に近い物体と遠い物体では、こちらが動いたときの見かけのずれ方が違います。When you move, a nearby object and a distant one shift by different amounts against the background.
Try it
With "Mars" selected and "Speed" at 20 days/s, press "Restart" to play from the beginning. In the left diagram (orbits seen from the north), check that Earth and Mars both orbit counterclockwise.
Around 150–170 days, when the left diagram shows "Opposition! Opposite the Sun", press "Pause". Check the trail color in the right panel (blue = prograde, red = retrograde), the "Motion" readout, and the direction of the line of sight from Earth to Mars.
Press "Play" and record the "Retrograde arc" when the retrograde ends. Set "Speed" to 60 days/s, run until the second retrograde, and compare "Time between retrogrades" with the "synodic period".
Switch the planet to "Jupiter" and then "Saturn", observe in the same way, and make a table of "Retrograde arc" and "Time between retrogrades".
Check
When did Mars's retrograde motion happen, and in what order did its apparent motion go?→ 衝(経過約160日、太陽・地球・火星が一直線)の前後に起こった。 It happened around opposition (about day 160, Sun, Earth and Mars in a line). The motion went eastward (prograde, longitude increasing) → westward (retrograde, longitude decreasing) → eastward again (prograde), making an S-shaped loop in the right panel.
What were Mars's retrograde arc and the time between retrogrades?→ 逆行弧は 16.0°、逆行の間隔は 779 日で、会合周期 779 日(約780日)と一致した。The retrograde arc was 16.0°, and the time between retrogrades was 779 days, matching the synodic period of 779 days (about 780 days).
What were the retrograde arc and the time between retrogrades for Jupiter and Saturn?→ 木星は逆行弧 9.9°・間隔 399 日、土星は逆行弧 6.8°・間隔 378 日。 Jupiter: arc 9.9°, every 399 days. Saturn: arc 6.8°, every 378 days. The farther the planet, the smaller the arc and the closer the interval gets to one year (365 days).
Think further
Why does retrograde motion happen around opposition? Explain using the line of sight in the left diagram.→ 衝のころ、地球は惑星のすぐ内側を同じ向きに、しかも惑星より速く動いているので、地球が惑星を追い越す。 Around opposition, Earth is moving just inside the planet in the same direction but faster, so Earth overtakes it. The line of sight from Earth to the planet then turns the opposite way (clockwise) from usual, so the planet appears to move back west against the distant stars. The planet itself never reverses.
Why does the time between retrogrades get closer to 365 days for more distant planets?→ 遠い惑星ほど公転周期 T が長く、1 年の間にほとんど動かない。 A distant planet has a long orbital period T and barely moves in a year, so Earth returns to nearly the same alignment after one orbit; the synodic period S (1/S = 1/365 − 1/T) approaches 365 days (Saturn: 378 days). Mars moves fairly fast itself, so Earth needs about 780 days to catch up again.
Common misconceptions
The idea that a planet actually reverses its orbit during retrograde motion. Planets always orbit in the same direction; retrograde motion is an apparent effect of Earth overtaking them.
The idea that retrograde motion happens at the same time every year. It repeats every synodic period: about every 2 years 2 months for Mars, and a little more than a year for Jupiter and Saturn.

All orbits are modeled as circles in one plane, so the loops seen in the real sky (up-and-down bulges) do not appear — only back-and-forth motion in longitude. Differences in retrograde arc from one opposition to the next, caused by Mars's elliptical orbit, are not reproduced either (16.0° every time here). The right panel has a time axis with older positions lower down, so explain that vertical motion there is not up-and-down motion in the sky. Switching planets restarts the simulation.
