Refraction, Total Internal Reflection and Convex Lens Images
Predict (before you touch anything)
When light inside water travels at a slant toward the surface and comes out into the air, do you think it bends toward the normal or away from it? What happens as you make the angle more and more slanted?💡 プールの底や、水を入れたコップに差したストローがどう見えるかを思い出してみましょう。Think about how the bottom of a pool, or a straw standing in a glass of water, looks to you.
As an object is moved closer to a convex lens, how do you think the size and direction of the image on the other side change? What if the object goes inside the focal point?💡 虫めがねで遠くの景色を見たときと、すぐ近くの文字を見たときの見え方の違いを思い出しましょう。Recall how things look through a magnifying glass when you look at a distant view compared with print held very close.
Try it
On the "Refraction & Total Reflection" tab, look at the starting state ("① Angle of incidence θ₁ (in medium, from normal)" = 45.0°, "② Refractive index of medium n" = 1.33). The light travels inside the medium (e.g. water, the lower part) toward the boundary with air. Identify the incident, reflected and refracted rays and read the "Angle of reflection θ₁′" and "Angle of refraction θ₂" values below.
Move the "① Angle of incidence θ₁" slider 0° → 30° → 45° and record in a table how the angle of reflection and the angle of refraction change (at θ₁ = 0° the light goes straight out into the air without bending).
Keeping n = 1.33, increase the angle of incidence 48° → 50° → 60° and compare it with the "Critical angle θc" (48.8°). Check where the refracted ray disappears, the label "Total internal reflection" appears, and the reflected ray becomes thick and bright.
Set θ₁ back to 30°, change "② Refractive index of medium n" 1.00 → 1.33 → 1.50 and watch how the angle of refraction and the critical angle readouts change. Then, at n = 1.50, set θ₁ to 45° and check whether total internal reflection happens.
Switch to the "Convex Lens Images" tab and move "③ Object distance a (in units of f)" closer: 3.00 f → 2.00 f → 1.50 f. Record the image distance b, the magnification and the "Real, inverted image" label.
Then set a to 1.00 f, 0.80 f and 0.50 f. Check when no image forms and when a "Virtual, upright image" appears, and see where the dotted backward extensions of the rays meet.
Check
When you changed the angle of incidence, what happened to the angle of reflection and the angle of refraction?→ 反射角はいつも入射角と同じだった(30° なら 30°、45° なら 45°)。 The angle of reflection was always equal to the angle of incidence (30° gives 30°, 45° gives 45°). The angle of refraction was larger than the angle of incidence: at n = 1.33 it was about 41.7° for θ₁ = 30° and about 70.1° for 45°. Light going from water into air bends away from the normal. At θ₁ = 0° it did not bend.
What happened when the angle of incidence became larger than the critical angle?→ n = 1.33 では θ₁ = 48° で屈折角が約 81.3° と境界面すれすれになり、臨界角 48.8° を超えた 50° や 60° では屈折光が消えて「全反射」と表示された。 At n = 1.33, θ₁ = 48° gave an angle of refraction of about 81.3°, almost along the boundary. Past the critical angle of 48.8°, at 50° and 60°, the refracted ray disappeared and "Total internal reflection" was shown. No light got out into the air, and only the reflected ray remained, thick and bright (its angle still equal to the angle of incidence).
When you increased the refractive index n, how did the angle of refraction and the critical angle change? At θ₁ = 30°, the angle of refraction was 30° at n = 1.00 (no bending), about 41.7° at n = 1.33 and about 48.6° at n = 1.50, so a larger n bends the light farther away from the normal. The critical angle went down from 48.8° (n = 1.33) to 41.8° (n = 1.50), so at n = 1.50 even θ₁ = 45° gave total internal reflection. At n = 1.00 the critical angle showed "none (90°)" and total internal reflection never happened.
When the object was moved from 3.00 f to 2.00 f to 1.50 f, how did the position and size of the real image change?→ 像はレンズから遠ざかり、大きくなった。a = 3.00 f で b = 1.50 f・0.50 倍、a = 2.00 f で b = 2.00 f・同じ大きさ(1.00 倍)、a = 1.50 f で b = 3.00 f・2.00 倍。 The image moved away from the lens and got bigger: a = 3.00 f gave b = 1.50 f at 0.50×, a = 2.00 f gave b = 2.00 f at the same size (1.00×), and a = 1.50 f gave b = 3.00 f at 2.00×. All were real, inverted images on the other side of the lens.
What happened to the image when the object was placed at the focal point (a = 1.00 f) or inside it (a = 0.50 f)?→ a = 1.00 f At a = 1.00 f the rays left the lens parallel and the display said "No image forms". At a = 0.50 f the rays spread out after the lens and never meet; their dotted backward extensions meet on the same side as the object, giving an upright virtual image 2.00× as big (b = −1.00 f).
Think further
Can total internal reflection happen for light entering water from the air? Use the fact that a light path can be traced backward (reversibility of light) together with the values from the simulation.→ 起こらない。 No. In the simulation, light at 48° in the water came out into the air at about 81.3°. Tracing that path backward, light entering from the air at 81.3° travels at 48° in the water. Even if the angle on the air side approaches 90°, the angle in the water only reaches the critical angle (about 48.8°), so the light always gets into the water. Total internal reflection only happens when light goes from the higher-index side to the lower-index side, such as water to air.
When you use a magnifying glass to read small print, why do you keep it closer to the print than its focal length?→ 物体が焦点より内側にあると、レンズの反対側からのぞいたときに正立で拡大された虚像が見えるから。 With the object inside the focal point, you see an upright, magnified virtual image when you look through the lens from the other side. In the simulation, a = 0.80 f gave an upright virtual image 5.00× as big and a = 0.50 f gave 2.00×, so it looks bigger the closer the object is to the focal point.
Common misconceptions
Light always bends the same way at a boundary." Going from air into water it bends toward the normal, and from water into air it bends away from the normal. Light hitting at a right angle (θ₁ = 0°) does not bend.
Total internal reflection can happen in either direction." It only happens when light goes from the higher-index side to the lower-index side (e.g. water to air) at or above the critical angle; it never happens for light entering water from air.
A convex lens always makes the image bigger" or "always projects an image on a screen." When the object is beyond 2F the real image is smaller, and when it is inside the focal point no real image forms; you see a virtual image by looking through the lens.

In tab 1 the light travels inside the medium (e.g. water) toward the boundary with air and refracts away from the normal according to n·sinθ₁ = sinθ₂. When θ₁ reaches the critical angle arcsin(1/n) the refracted ray disappears and only the reflected ray remains, drawn thick and bright and labelled "Total internal reflection". The changing brightness of the reflected ray is a rough representation based on the Fresnel equations; for grade 7 it is enough that reflection gets stronger near the critical angle and becomes total beyond it. Why total internal reflection never happens from air into water is handled in the "think" question using the reversibility of light. The lens tab is an ideal thin-lens model (f fixed on screen, 1/a + 1/b = 1/f); for grade 7 the sign of the magnification and the formula can be treated as extras.
