Earth from Space: Sunlight by Latitude and Season

Earth from Space: Sunlight by Latitude and Season 目安 20分about 20 min
Using a view from space, students understand that because Earth orbits with its axis tilted about 23.4° from the perpendicular to its orbital plane, the latitude where the Sun is directly overhead shifts between 23.4° N and 23.4° S through the year, so the noon Sun height and the length of daytime at a given place change with the seasons.

Predict (before you touch anything)

In Tokyo (35° N), is the noon Sun higher on the June solstice or on the December solstice? Roughly how many degrees do you think the difference is?💡 地軸の傾きの角度(約23.4°)が、季節によってどちら向きにはたらくかを考えてみよう。Think about which way the axis tilt (about 23.4°) points toward or away from the Sun in each season.
In regions near the North Pole (for example 70° N), do you think there are days when the Sun never sets or never rises at all? If so, around what time of year?💡 地球が自転するとき、北極付近の地点が昼の側と夜の側のどちらを通るかを想像してみよう。Imagine whether a point near the North Pole passes through the day side or the night side as Earth spins.

Try it

Press "Stop rotation". Move the "Season (Jan 1 = day 0)" slider to the "Equinox", "Solstice", "Equinox" and "Solstice" ticks in turn, and watch how the axis tilt, the yellow "Sun overhead at" line and "Declination δ" in the panel change. Also check that the sunlight arrows are parallel.
Set "Latitude (north = +)" to 35.0° N, set the season to the June solstice (Day 172) and the December solstice (Day 355), and record the "Noon Sun height" angle in the diagram and the "Noon Sun height" and "Length of daytime (approx.)" values in the panel.
Keeping the June solstice, change the latitude to 0° (Equator), 23.5° N and 35.0° S and record the noon Sun height. Find the latitude where the noon Sun height becomes 90° (directly overhead).
Set the latitude to 70.0° N and press "Play rotation". At the June solstice, the March equinox and the December solstice, watch whether the moving point passes through the day side or the night side, together with the "Sun never sets (polar day)" or "Sun never rises (polar night)" message on screen.

Check

At the June solstice, the December solstice and the equinoxes, what is the latitude where the Sun is overhead (declination δ)?→ 夏至は+23.4°(北緯23.4°、北極側が太陽の方へ傾く)、冬至は−23.4°(南緯23.4°、北極側が太陽と反対へ傾く)、春分・秋分はほぼ0°(赤道)。June solstice: +23.4° (23.4° N; the North Pole tilts toward the Sun). December solstice: −23.4° (23.4° S; the North Pole tilts away). Equinoxes: about 0° (the Equator).
What were the noon Sun height and the length of daytime at 35° N on the two solstices?→ 夏至は南中高度約78.4°、昼の長さ約14.4時間。 June solstice: about 78.4° and about 14.4 hours. December solstice: about 31.6° and about 9.6 hours. The difference is about 47° (twice 23.4°). At the March equinox it is 55.0° and 12.0 hours.
On the June solstice, at which latitude did the noon Sun height reach 90°? What about at the Equator and at 35° S?→ 北緯23.4°付近(スライダーでは北緯23.5°で89.9°)で、黄色い「太陽が真上になる緯度」と同じ緯度。 Around 23.4° N (89.9° at 23.5° N on the slider), the same latitude as the yellow "Sun overhead at" line. At the Equator it is 66.6°, and at 35° S it is only 31.6° (it is winter in the Southern Hemisphere).
At 70° N with rotation playing, how did the point move on the two solstices?→ 夏至では地点が1日中昼側から出ず「太陽が沈まない(極昼)」、昼の長さは24時間。 On the June solstice the point never leaves the day side all day ("Sun never sets (polar day)", 24 h of daytime). On the December solstice it stays on the night side all day ("Sun never rises (polar night)", 0 h; the noon Sun height is −3.4°, below the horizon). Around the equinoxes day and night are about 12 hours each.

Think further

The noon Sun height equals 90° minus the difference between the latitude and δ. Explain why, using the "Zenith", the "Horizon" and the parallel sunlight in the diagram.→ 太陽光はどこでも平行なので、太陽が真上になる緯度δの地点では光が天頂から来る(南中高度90°)。 90°−(35°+23.4°)=31.6°。Sunlight arrives everywhere in parallel, so at the latitude δ where the Sun is overhead the light comes from the zenith (90°). Moving 1° of latitude away tilts the ground (horizon) by 1°, so the angle between the light and the zenith grows by 1°. Therefore the noon Sun height is 90° minus the difference between the latitude and δ. Example: at 35° N, June solstice 90° − (35° − 23.4°) = 78.4°, December solstice 90° − (35° + 23.4°) = 31.6°.
If Earth's axis were not tilted (δ always 0°), what would happen to the seasons in Japan?→ 1年中、春分・秋分と同じ状態になる。 Every day would be like an equinox. At 35° N the noon Sun height would stay at 55° and daytime at 12 hours all year, so the energy received from the Sun would not change with the seasons, and there would be almost no summer–winter change.

The diagram is a side view perpendicular to the Sun–Earth line; Earth is held fixed and the axis direction changes with the season. Declination δ is approximated by a sine curve, so equinox dates are off by 1–3 days from reality and δ ≈ −1.4° at the "Equinox" tick on Day 266. Daytime length is an estimate that ignores atmospheric refraction and the Sun's apparent size, so it is slightly shorter than values from real sunrise and sunset times. At junior-high level, use the forms "June solstice: 90° − (latitude − 23.4°), December solstice: 90° − (latitude + 23.4°)" and call δ "the latitude where the Sun is overhead".
