Forest Floor Decomposer Simulator

Students understand that decomposers such as fungi and bacteria break down organic matter like fallen leaves and dead animals into carbon dioxide and inorganic nutrients, which return to the air and soil to be used again by producers; that the rate of decomposition depends on temperature and moisture; and that matter only moves around the ecosystem while its total amount stays constant.

Predict (before you touch anything)

If all the decomposers (fungi and bacteria) disappeared from the forest soil, what do you think would happen to (1) the fallen leaves and dead animals on the ground, (2) the nutrients in the soil, and (3) the trees and grass?💡 植物は根から何を吸収して育つのか、その養分はもともとどこから来るのかを考えてみよう。Think about what plants take up through their roots to grow, and where those nutrients originally come from.
Do you think fallen leaves break down faster in a cold, dry place or in a warm, moist place?💡 分解者も生物であることを思い出そう。 Remember that decomposers are living things too. Why does food in a refrigerator spoil more slowly?

Try it

Press "Reset", then press "Speed ×1" so it becomes "Speed ×4". Follow arrows ① to ⑥ on screen and confirm that matter leaving the dead-matter pool through "②Breakdown" splits into two arrows: "③CO2 release" (to the air) and "④Nutrients" (to the soil). Also note the "Total" and "conserved: OK" readout at the bottom.
Keep "Humidity" at 70% and set "Temperature" to 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 ℃. Each time, record the "Decomposition rate k" and "CO2 release" values at the bottom.
Return "Temperature" to 20 ℃, set "Humidity" to 20%, 50% and 100%, and record "Decomposition rate k" in the same way.
Press "Reset", put "Humidity" back to 70% and move the "Decomposers" slider all the way left (none (0)). For about 30–40 seconds, record how "Dead matter", "Soil nutrients", "Producers", "Air CO2" and "Plant growth" change.
Then move "Decomposers" back to "normal" (the middle) and watch how dead matter, soil nutrients and producers change.

Check

Where does the matter broken down by decomposers go?→ 「③CO2放出」で二酸化炭素として大気へ、「④無機養分」で土壌へ、2つに分かれてもどる(このモデルではおよそ6:4)。 It splits into two: carbon dioxide goes to the air via "③CO2 release" and inorganic nutrients go to the soil via "④Nutrients" (about 6:4 in this model). The CO2 is taken up again by producers through "⑤Photosynthesis" and the nutrients through "⑥Root uptake".
How did the rate of decomposition change when you raised the temperature or humidity?→ スライダーを動かしたとたんに「分解速度 k」が変わる。 Decomposition rate k" changes as soon as the slider moves. At 70% humidity, k is about 0.016/s at 0 ℃, 0.063/s at 20 ℃ and 0.25/s at 40 ℃, roughly doubling for every 10 ℃. At 20 ℃, k is about 0.007/s at 20% humidity and 0.15/s at 100%, so wetter means faster. "CO2 release" rises accordingly and dead matter decreases faster.
With decomposers set to "none (0)", what happened to dead matter, soil nutrients and producers?→ 「②分解」「③CO2放出」「④無機養分」が0になり、遺体は約170から800〜900以上へどんどん積もる。 ②Breakdown", "③CO2 release" and "④Nutrients" drop to 0, and dead matter piles up from about 170 to 800–900 or more. Soil nutrients fall from about 200 to around 20, "Plant growth" drops to nearly 0, and producers (about 300 down to a few tens or less) and consumers decline. Air CO2 also decreases.
Whatever you did, what happened to the "Total" value?→ いつも1000.0のままで「物質保存 OK」と表示される。 It always stays at 1000.0 and shows "conserved: OK". Matter only moves among the five pools (air CO2, producers, consumers, dead matter and soil nutrients); it is never created or destroyed.

Think further

Why do even the producers decline when there are no decomposers? Explain using the ideas of food chains and the cycling of matter.→ 生産者は光合成で有機物をつくるが、そのために土の無機養分と大気の二酸化炭素が必要である。 Producers make organic matter by photosynthesis, which needs inorganic nutrients from the soil and carbon dioxide from the air. When producers and consumers die, their matter becomes dead organic matter, and it cannot be reused until decomposers turn it back into inorganic substances. Without decomposers, matter stays locked in the dead-matter pool and the cycle stops, so nutrients and CO2 run short, producers cannot grow, and the consumers that eat them also decline.
Why might the forest floor of a tropical rainforest have only a thin layer of fallen leaves, while thick litter layers tend to build up in cold coniferous forests?→ 暖かく湿った熱帯では分解者のはたらきが活発で、落ち葉がすぐに分解されてしまう(シミュレーションで気温35℃・湿度95%にすると遺体がすばやく減る)。 In the warm, moist tropics decomposers are very active, so leaves are broken down quickly (in the simulation, at 35 ℃ and 95% humidity dead matter drops fast). In cold regions decomposition is slow, so leaves pile up before they can be broken down (lowering the temperature makes dead matter build up).

The model is a simplified exchange of matter (arbitrary units, total 1000) among five pools. Decomposition is assumed to double for every 10 ℃ and to rise with moisture; it does not represent the slowdown that occurs in real forests when waterlogged soil lacks oxygen. Have students think of "Humidity" as the moisture of the forest floor rather than of the air. The decomposer arrows show CO2 from respiration and inorganic nutrients as two separate flows, and the decomposers' own bodies are not treated as a pool. The time scale does not correspond to real years or seasons, so focus on comparing trends at "Speed ×4".
