Electrorefining of Copper

中3 · 化学単元: 電気分解Electrorefining of Copper 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that when current passes through copper sulfate solution with crude copper as the anode and pure copper as the cathode, copper at the anode dissolves as copper ions and the same mass of copper is deposited on the cathode, giving pure copper free of impurities, and that the amount is proportional to the current and the time.

Predict (before you touch anything)

When crude copper (anode) and pure copper (cathode) are placed in copper sulfate solution and a current is passed, how do you think the mass of each electrode will change? Do you think any gas will be produced?💡 陽極と陰極で、電子を失う反応と電子を受け取る反応がそれぞれ起こる。 One electrode has a reaction that loses electrons and the other a reaction that gains electrons. Think about which electrode the copper ions (Cu²⁺) in the solution are attracted to.
If the current is doubled, what do you think happens to the amount of copper deposited on the cathode?💡 電流は1秒あたりに流れる電子の量を表している。 Current tells how many electrons flow each second. Also recall how many electrons one copper ion needs to become copper.

Try it

Press "Reset" (the current stops). Set "Current" to 1.0 A, "Time speed" to 1 s = 5 min and "Impurities in crude copper" to 10 %, and check "Anode (crude copper) mass" 30.000 g and "Cathode (pure copper) mass" 6.000 g.
Press "Start" and press "Stop" when "Time current flows" is about 30 min. Observe which way Cu²⁺ (blue) and SO₄²⁻ (yellow) move, where the electron arrows go, how the thickness of each electrode changes, and what collects under the anode. Record "Copper dissolved from anode", "Copper deposited on cathode" and "Anode slime".
While stopped, check whether the ions or the mass values change.
Press "Reset", set "Current" to 2.0 A, run again for about 30 min, and compare "Copper deposited on cathode" with the 1.0 A run.
Press "Reset", change "Impurities in crude copper" to 0 % and then 20 %, run each, and compare "Anode slime" and how much the "Anode (crude copper) mass" decreases.

Check

During the current flow, toward which electrode did Cu²⁺ and SO₄²⁻ each move? Where were the electron arrows drawn?→ 陽イオンのCu²⁺は陰極(−)へ、陰イオンのSO₄²⁻は陽極(+)へ動いた。 The positive ion Cu²⁺ moved to the cathode (−) and the negative ion SO₄²⁻ moved to the anode (+). The electron arrows appear only in the wires, going from the anode through the battery to the cathode, and are not drawn in the solution.
After about 30 min at 1.0 A, how many grams were "Copper dissolved from anode" and "Copper deposited on cathode"?→ どちらも約0.6 g(例:−0.596 gと+0.596 g)で、常に同じ値だった。 Both were about 0.6 g (for example −0.596 g and +0.596 g), always the same value. At the anode Cu → Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻ occurs and at the cathode Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻ → Cu, and no gas is produced.
At 2.0 A, how much copper was deposited on the cathode in the same time? What happened while stopped?→ 約30分で約1.2 g(1.0 Aの約2倍)になり、イオンの動きも速くなった。 About 1.2 g in about 30 min, roughly twice the 1.0 A amount, and the ions also moved faster. The deposited copper is proportional to current × time. While stopped, ion movement, dissolving and depositing all stop and the mass values do not change.
What happened to the impurities in the crude copper? Was the decrease in anode mass equal to the increase in cathode mass?→ 不純物はとけずに陽極の下に「陽極スライム」として沈み、陰極には付かない。 The impurities do not dissolve; they sink below the anode as "anode slime" and are not deposited on the cathode. So the anode's loss is dissolved copper + slime (e.g. at 10 %: 0.712 g = 0.641 g + 0.071 g), larger than the cathode's gain (the dissolved copper only). Only at 0 % impurities are they equal, with 0 g of slime.

Think further

Copper ions keep turning into copper at the cathode, so why does the blue color of the solution hardly change during the current flow?→ 陰極でCu²⁺が1個銅になるとき、陽極では銅が1個Cu²⁺になってとけ出すので、水溶液中のCu²⁺の数(この作品では36個)は一定に保たれる。 Each time one Cu²⁺ becomes copper at the cathode, one copper atom at the anode dissolves as Cu²⁺, so the number of Cu²⁺ in the solution (36 in this simulation) stays constant. The blue color comes from Cu²⁺, so its intensity does not change.
Compared with electrolyzing copper chloride solution with carbon electrodes, what is different in this electrorefining?→ 塩化銅水溶液の電気分解では陰極に銅が付き、陽極では塩化物イオンが電子を失って塩素が発生し、銅イオンが減るので青色がうすくなる。 In copper chloride electrolysis, copper is deposited at the cathode while chloride ions lose electrons at the anode to form chlorine gas, and the blue color fades as copper ions are used up. In electrorefining the anode itself is copper and dissolves as Cu²⁺, so no gas forms and the Cu²⁺ in the solution is not used up. (Copper chloride electrolysis is not modeled in this simulation.)

Electrorefining is extension content in junior high. The model simplifies by making all impurities stay undissolved as anode slime; in reality metals more reactive than copper (zinc, iron, nickel) dissolve into the solution, while less reactive ones such as gold and silver settle as anode slime. Masses follow Faraday's law (about 1.19 g per hour at 1 A); "Time speed" only fast-forwards the elapsed time and does not make the reaction itself faster. The run stops automatically when the crude copper anode falls to about 15 % of its starting mass.
