Food Chains and Matter Cycles

中3 · 生物単元: 食物連鎖と生態系の物質循環Food Chains and Matter Cycles 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that in an ecosystem, matter such as carbon cycles among the air, living things and the soil through photosynthesis, food chains, respiration and decomposition, with decomposers keeping the cycle going, while energy from the Sun does not cycle but flows in one direction and finally leaves as heat.

Predict (before you touch anything)

If decomposers such as bacteria and fungi disappeared from a forest, what do you think would happen to the plants, rabbits and foxes?💡 死がいやふんの中の有機物はどうなるか、植物が育つのに土から何を取り入れているかを考えよう。Think about what happens to the organic matter in remains and waste, and what plants take in from the soil to grow.
Where do you think the carbon in the organic matter made by plants, and the energy from sunlight, each end up?💡 生物が呼吸をすると何が出てくるか、体が温かいのはなぜかを思い出そう。Recall what living things give off when they respire, and why bodies are warm.

Try it

Press "Reset" and watch with "Sunlight" 70, "Decomposer activity" 60 and "Feeding pressure" 50. Record where the CO2 balls (hollow), organic matter balls (green and brown), nutrients (yellow squares), energy (yellow dashes) and "Heat" (red dots) each move from and to.
Record the amounts shown for the plant, rabbit and fox, the "CO2 level" in the air, and "Organic" and "Nutrients" in the soil.
Set "Decomposer activity" to 0 and watch for about a minute. Record how soil "Organic" and "Nutrients", the plant, rabbit and fox amounts, and the flow of CO2 from the decomposers to the air change.
Return "Decomposer activity" to 60, press "Reset", and set "Sunlight" to 0. Watch the balls on the photosynthesis and respiration arrows and how the "CO2 level" changes.
Return "Sunlight" to 70, press "Reset", set "Feeding pressure" to 100, wait about 20 seconds, and compare the plant, rabbit and fox amounts with the starting values.

Check

Which way do the food-chain arrows ("eaten") point? On which arrows do CO2 balls leave or enter the air?→ 植物→ウサギ→キツネと、食べられる側から食べる側へ向いている。 Plant → rabbit → fox, from the one that is eaten to the one that eats. CO2 enters the plant from the air on the "Photosynthesis" arrow and returns to the air on the "Respiration" arrows of the plant, rabbit and fox and on the decomposers' "Decomposition" arrow.
With "Decomposer activity" at 0, what happened to the soil and organism values?→ 死がい・ふんが分解されずに土壌の「有機物」が21から100以上に増え、「養分」は11.6から0.5ほどまで減って枯渇した。 Remains and waste were not broken down, so soil "Organic" rose from 21 to over 100, while "Nutrients" fell from 11.6 to about 0.5 (used up). Without nutrients the plants dropped from about 45 to about 1, and so did the rabbits that eat them (about 9 → 0.3) and the foxes (about 4 → 0.3). The CO2 flow from the decomposers to the air stopped and "No CO2 return" was shown.
With "Sunlight" at 0, what happened to the photosynthesis and respiration arrows and the "CO2 level"?→ 光合成の矢印の玉が止まり(「日射なし:光合成(CO2吸収)停止」と表示)、呼吸の矢印ではCO2の玉が出続けた。 Balls stopped moving on the photosynthesis arrow ("No sunlight: photosynthesis (CO2 uptake) stops" appears), while CO2 balls kept coming out on the respiration arrows. So the air's "CO2 level" rose from 135 to over 190 and the plants decreased.
Where do the yellow dashed (energy) arrows and the "Heat" arrows start and end?→ エネルギーは太陽→植物→ウサギ→キツネと一方向に進み、植物・ウサギ・キツネ・分解者から「熱」として画面の外へ出ていく。 Energy goes one way, Sun → plant → rabbit → fox, and leaves the picture as "Heat" from the plant, rabbit, fox and decomposers. No arrow brings it back to the air or soil, so it does not cycle.

Think further

What does "Matter cycles, but energy flows in one direction only" mean? Explain using the arrows in this simulation.→ 炭素は大気のCO2→光合成で植物の有機物→食べられてウサギ・キツネ→死がい・ふん→分解者→CO2として大気、とひと回りしてもとにもどる(閉じた輪)。 Carbon goes from CO2 in the air → organic matter in plants by photosynthesis → rabbits and foxes by being eaten → remains and waste → decomposers → back to the air as CO2, a closed loop. Energy enters as sunlight, is stored in organic matter and passed along the food chain, but becomes heat through respiration and leaves the ecosystem without returning. That is why an ecosystem needs a continuous supply of energy from the Sun.
When "Feeding pressure" was increased, how did the plant, rabbit and fox amounts change, and why?→ 植物は約45から20ほどに減り、ウサギは約9から18ほど、キツネは約4から6ほどに増えた。 Plants fell from about 45 to about 20, while rabbits rose from about 9 to about 18 and foxes from about 4 to about 6. Rabbits eat plants faster, so plants decrease; rabbits with more food increase, and so do the foxes that eat them. In a food chain, a change in one species affects the numbers of the others.

The numbers are relative values from a simple model of carbon and nutrient amounts, not real ecosystem quantities or rates, and populations are held at a minimum of 0.3 so they never go extinct. The model has only one chain, plant → rabbit → fox, and leaves out real food webs, and decomposition by soil animals such as earthworms. Note that "Feeding pressure" changes only how fast rabbits eat plants.
