What Happens to the Bulb at the Neutralization Point?

中3 · 化学単元: 酸・アルカリと中和(イオンのモデル)What Happens to the Bulb at the Neutralization Point? 目安 20分about 20 min
Using an ion model, students understand that adding hydrochloric acid to sodium hydroxide solution lowers the conductivity because H⁺ and OH⁻ combine to form water, that it never reaches zero at the neutralization point because Na⁺ and Cl⁻ remain, and that it rises again once excess H⁺ is added.

Predict (before you touch anything)

A bulb is lit by NaOH solution. We slowly add hydrochloric acid. How do you think the brightness will change? Sketch a graph with "amount of HCl added" on the x-axis and "brightness" on the y-axis.💡 水溶液に電流が流れるのは何があるからでしたか。 What must a solution contain for current to flow? Also recall what H⁺ and OH⁻ form when they meet.
At the exact neutralization point (when the solution is neutral), do you think the bulb goes completely dark? Separate the ions that are used up in neutralization from the ions that take no part in the reaction.

Try it

Press "Pause", then "Reset". Set "HCl concentration" to 0.1 mol/L and "HCl drip rate" to 1.0 drops/s, and make sure "Stirring rod ON" is checked. Record the ions in the beaker and their numbers (counter at the bottom: Na⁺ 24, OH⁻ 24), the bulb's "Brightness 100%", and the pH meter reading.
Press "Start" to drip in the acid. Watch H⁺ (orange) and OH⁻ (red) meet, show an "H₂O" mark and disappear, and watch what happens to Cl⁻ (green) and Na⁺ (blue).
Watching the yellow "Measured" line on the brightness graph, record the brightness, pH and ion counts near the green dashed "Neutralization point" (HCl 2.4 mmol). Continue until "HCl 4.8mmol done" appears and record the final brightness and ion counts.
Press "Reset", uncheck the stirring rod ("Stirring rod OFF") and run again. Observe the ion distribution, the pH meter and the brightness, then check the box again and see how the distribution changes when stirred.
Press "Reset", turn the stirring rod back ON, set "HCl concentration" to 0.4 mol/L and run. Compare the position and height of the dip in the white dashed "Theory" line with the 0.1 mol/L run.

Check

As acid is added, which ion decreases in number in the beaker? What happens to it?→ OH⁻が減っていく(24→0)。 OH⁻ decreases (24 → 0). When it meets an added H⁺ they form water, H⁺ + OH⁻ → H₂O, and disappear; the "H₂O formed" count goes up. Na⁺ and Cl⁻ do not pair up and keep moving separately; Na⁺ stays at 24 and Cl⁻ increases with every drop.
Near the neutralization point (HCl 2.4 mmol), what were the brightness and pH? Did the brightness reach zero?→ 明るさは最小になるが0にはならない(実測でおよそ35〜40%、理論の点線では約25%)。 Brightness is at its lowest but not zero (about 35–40% on the measured line, about 25% on the dashed theory line). The pH meter crosses 7 toward acidic and a green ▲ appears on the graph's x-axis. About 24 Na⁺ and 24 Cl⁻ remain, so current still flows.
After the neutralization point, what happened to the brightness and the ion counts as more acid was added?→ OH⁻が0になったので、加えたH⁺は反応せずにそのまま残り、H⁺とCl⁻が増える。 With no OH⁻ left, the added H⁺ stays unreacted, so H⁺ and Cl⁻ increase. Brightness rises again to about 70–75% at 4.8 mmol, giving a V-shaped (valley) graph. The pH drops to about 1.4.
With the stirring rod OFF, what happened to the ion distribution and the pH meter?→ H⁺とCl⁻は滴下口(左側)付近にかたまり、中和もそこだけで起こる。 H⁺ and Cl⁻ gather near the drop inlet on the left, and neutralization happens only there. OH⁻ remains on the right, so the mixture is uneven and the pH meter on the right keeps showing a high pH (around 12) for a while. Turning the stirring rod ON mixes everything and the unevenness evens out.

Think further

Before and after the neutralization point the total number of ions can be similar, so why is the bulb brighter after it?→ 中和前は残っているOH⁻が、中和後は増えたH⁺が電気を運ぶ。 Before neutralization the remaining OH⁻ carries charge; afterwards the added H⁺ does. H⁺ moves much faster than Na⁺ or Cl⁻ (OH⁻ is also fast, but H⁺ is faster still), so it carries more current. Brightness depends not only on how many ions there are but also on which ions (their mobility). The colored bar on the graph shows the large orange H⁺ share.
When sulfuric acid is added to barium hydroxide solution, the current drops almost to zero at the neutralization point. Why is this different from what this simulation shows?→ その反応では塩の硫酸バリウムが水にとけにくく沈殿するので、Ba²⁺とSO₄²⁻も水溶液中からなくなり、イオンがほとんど残らない。 There the salt, barium sulfate, is insoluble and precipitates, so Ba²⁺ and SO₄²⁻ also leave the solution and almost no ions remain. Sodium chloride from HCl and NaOH stays dissolved as Na⁺ and Cl⁻, so the current does not drop to zero. (The barium sulfate reaction is not modeled in this simulation.)

The model adds 1 mL drops of HCl to 24 mL of 0.10 mol/L NaOH, coarse-grained to 1 particle = 0.1 mmol; "brightness" is simply the conductivity weighted by each ion's molar conductivity (start = 100%), whereas a real bulb's brightness is not proportional to current and may not light at all at these concentrations, so use an ammeter, LED or buzzer in the lab. Because particle reactions take time, the measured line dips less than the dashed theory line, and the gap grows with higher HCl concentration or drip rate (at 0.4 mol/L the dip is barely visible), so demonstrate the valley at 0.1 mol/L with slow dripping and have students compare with the dashed line. Why H⁺ is so mobile (proton hopping, the Grotthuss mechanism) is beyond junior-high level; "H⁺ moves especially fast" is enough.
