Cell Size and Chromosome Simulator
Students understand that as a cell grows its surface area becomes small relative to its volume (the S/V ratio falls), so it divides into smaller cells at a certain size, and that because the chromosomes are copied first and then shared equally, each daughter cell gets the same number and set of chromosomes as the original cell.

Predict (before you touch anything)
As a cell grows and its radius increases, do you think "surface area ÷ volume" (the S/V ratio) gets larger or smaller?💡 半径が2倍になると、表面積(r²に比例)と体積(r³に比例)はそれぞれ何倍になるか考えよう。If the radius doubles, by what factor do the surface area (proportional to r²) and the volume (proportional to r³) each increase?
When a cell with 4 chromosomes divides into two, how many chromosomes do you think each daughter cell will have?💡 分裂の前に染色体に何が起こるかに注目しよう。Pay attention to what happens to the chromosomes before the cell divides.
Try it
Press "Reset", keep "Chromosomes 2n =" at 4 and "S/V threshold" at 0.300. As the cell grows, watch r, S = 4πr², V = 4πr³/3 and S/V (= 3/r), and watch the S/V gauge approach the red line (the threshold).
Follow the stage tabs at the top (Grow → ①Copy → ②Line up → ③Split → ④Cytokinesis) and observe the shape and position of the chromosomes at each stage. Lower "Growth speed" or use "Pause" if it is hard to follow.
When division is finished, record the chromosome count and colored squares under each daughter cell, and the "Last division" line (parent r → daughter r/∛2, volume ratio, S/V recovery).
Change "S/V threshold" to 0.250 and "Chromosomes 2n =" to 8, and check how the radius at division, the daughter radius and the chromosome numbers change.
Check
How did the S/V ratio change as the cell grew? With a threshold of 0.300, at what radius did the cell start dividing?→ S/V比は半径が大きくなるにつれてゆっくり小さくなる(r=7.6 μmで約0.39 → r=9.2 μmで約0.33)。 The S/V ratio slowly decreases as the radius grows (about 0.39 at r = 7.6 μm, about 0.33 at r = 9.2 μm). For a sphere S/V = 3/r, so division starts when it drops below 0.300, at r ≈ 10 μm (3 ÷ 0.300).
When do the chromosomes become X-shaped? How do they move during division?→ 分裂が始まる前の「①複製」で、各染色体が同じ色の2本(姉妹染色分体)からなるX字型になる。 At "①Copy", before division starts, each chromosome becomes an X made of two same-colored sister chromatids. Then at "②Line up" they line up on the equator, at "③Split" each X separates and one chromatid moves to each pole, and at "④Cytokinesis" the cell pinches into two.
After division, how many chromosomes did daughter cells A and B have, and in what colors?→ 2n=4のときはどちらも4本(ペア1の色が2本、ペア2の色が2本)、2n=8のときはどちらも8本で、色の構成は親細胞と同じ。 With 2n = 4, both have 4 (two of the Pair 1 color and two of the Pair 2 color); with 2n = 8, both have 8. The color set matches the parent, shown as "A 4, B 4 (parent 2n=4)".
How large was the daughter cell's radius compared with the parent's? What happened to the S/V ratio?→ r/∛2(約0.79倍)で、例えば親 r 10.02 → 娘 7.95 μm、体積比は0.500(ちょうど半分)。 It is r/∛2 (about 0.79 times), for example parent r 10.02 → daughter 7.95 μm, with a volume ratio of 0.500 (exactly half). The S/V ratio recovered from 0.300 to about 0.377. The radius is not halved (not r/2).
Think further
Why is it a problem for a cell if its S/V ratio becomes too small?→ 細胞は表面(細胞膜)を通して酸素や養分を取り入れ、二酸化炭素などの不要物を出している。 A cell takes in oxygen and nutrients and gets rid of wastes such as carbon dioxide through its surface (cell membrane). If the surface area (the exchange window) becomes small compared with the volume (how much is needed), exchange cannot keep up. Dividing into smaller cells keeps the S/V ratio high.
If a cell split in two without first copying its chromosomes, what would happen to the daughter cells?→ 染色体が半分ずつ(またはかたよって)分かれ、娘細胞は親と同じ遺伝子のセットをもてなくなる。 The chromosomes would be split in halves (or unevenly), and the daughter cells would not get the same set of genes as the parent. Because each chromosome is copied into an X (two identical chromatids) and then one copy goes to each pole, the daughters inherit the same number and set of chromosomes as the parent.
Common misconceptions
When a cell divides, each daughter has half as many chromosomes." In body-cell division (mitosis) the chromosomes are copied first, so each daughter has the same number as the parent (4 if 2n = 4).
Half the volume means half the radius." Volume is proportional to the cube of the radius, so half the volume means a radius of 1/∛2 (about 0.79 times); halving the radius would make the volume 1/8.

The model treats the cell as a sphere that divides when its S/V ratio falls below a threshold; real cells do not time division by S/V alone. Replication happens before division (interphase), and at line-up the homologous chromosomes do not pair but line up individually, as in real mitosis. The sizes are adjusted for visibility, and at junior-high level "2n" and "sister chromatids" can be described simply as "the number of chromosomes" and "a copied chromosome".
