2:1Electrolysis of Water 2:1
Predict (before you touch anything)
When water is electrolyzed, which gas collects in the tube on the − side and which on the + side? Will the amounts be the same?💡 水の化学式H₂Oを見て、水素原子と酸素原子の数の割合を考えてみよう。Look at the formula of water, H₂O, and think about the ratio of hydrogen atoms to oxygen atoms.
In the electrolysis of water, sodium hydroxide is dissolved in the water before passing a current. What do you think would happen with pure water and nothing dissolved?💡 水溶液の中で電気を運ぶのは何かを思い出そう。Recall what carries electricity through a solution.
Try it
With the default settings (Electrolyte 5.0 %, Current 0.60 A, Switch ON), watch for about 10 seconds. Check which electrode gives off more bubbles, how gas collects at the top of each tube and pushes the water level down, the − (cathode) and + (anode) labels, the e⁻ arrows on the wires, and which way Na⁺ and OH⁻ move.
Record the readout "H₂ … mL, O₂ … mL Volume ratio H₂:O₂ = … : 1" every few seconds. Then press the switch to turn it OFF, check what stops, and press it again to turn it back ON.
Press "Reset", set Current to 1.00 A, and compare the bubbling speed, the speed of the e⁻ on the wires and the volume ratio with the 0.60 A run.
Set Electrolyte to 10.0 %, 0.5 % and 0.0 % in turn, and compare the "Current … A" value in the readout, the bubbling and the number of ions in the liquid.
Set Electrolyte to 10.0 % and Current to 1.00 A, wait until the hydrogen tube is full, and record the final volumes and ratio.
Check
Which gas formed at the − electrode (cathode) and which at the + electrode (anode)? How did the amounts differ?→ −極(陰極)側には水素(H₂)、+極(陽極)側には酸素(O₂)がたまった。 Hydrogen (H₂) collected on the − (cathode) side and oxygen (O₂) on the + (anode) side. The − electrode gave off more bubbles; for example, with 2.4 mL of hydrogen there was 1.2 mL of oxygen, and the ratio was always H₂:O₂ = 2.00 : 1. When the hydrogen tube was full there were 20.0 mL of hydrogen and 10.0 mL of oxygen.
Which way did the electrons in the wires and the Na⁺ and OH⁻ ions in the solution move?→ 電子(e⁻)は電源の−極から導線を通って陰極(−極)へ向かい、陽極(+極)からは導線を通って電源の+極へもどっていた。 Electrons (e⁻) flowed from the − terminal of the power supply through the wire to the cathode (−), and from the anode (+) through the wire back to the + terminal. In the solution, the positive Na⁺ ions drifted slowly toward the cathode (−) and the negative OH⁻ ions toward the anode (+).
When you raised Current from 0.60 A to 1.00 A, what changed and what stayed the same?→ 泡の出る速さと導線の電子の動く速さが大きくなり、同じ時間でたまる気体が多くなった(10秒ほどで0.60 Aでは水素約2.4 mL、1.00 Aでは約3.8 mL)。 The bubbles formed faster and the electrons on the wires moved faster, so more gas collected in the same time (in about 10 s, roughly 2.4 mL of hydrogen at 0.60 A versus about 3.8 mL at 1.00 A). But the ratio stayed at H₂:O₂ = 2.00 : 1 in both cases.
How did the current change with Electrolyte? What happened at 0.0 % and with the switch OFF?→ 「電流の強さ」0.60 Aのとき、流れる電流は濃度10.0 %で0.60 A、5.0 %で0.30 A、0.5 %で0.03 Aと、濃度が小さいほど小さく、液中のイオンも少なくなった。 With Current set to 0.60 A, the current that actually flowed was 0.60 A at 10.0 %, 0.30 A at 5.0 % and 0.03 A at 0.5 %: the lower the concentration, the smaller the current and the fewer ions in the liquid. At 0.0 % there were no ions and the readout said "Current 0.00 A: pure water hardly conducts electricity, so no electrolysis happens"; no bubbles formed. With the switch OFF, everything stopped as well.
Think further
Why does the hydrogen-to-oxygen volume ratio stay 2:1 no matter what the current is?→ 水の電気分解は 2H₂O → 2H₂ + O₂ という反応で、水分子2個から水素分子2個と酸素分子1個ができる。 Electrolysis of water is 2H₂O → 2H₂ + O₂: two water molecules give two hydrogen molecules and one oxygen molecule. A stronger current only splits more water; the ratio of hydrogen to oxygen molecules is always 2:1. At the same temperature and pressure, a gas's volume is proportional to its number of molecules, so the volume ratio is also 2:1.
The sodium hydroxide is not used up during the electrolysis. Pure water contains almost no ions, so hardly any current flows. Dissolving sodium hydroxide supplies Na⁺ and OH⁻ ions, and their movement through the solution lets the current flow easily. It is the water that is decomposed; the sodium hydroxide is there to make the solution conduct.
Common misconceptions
Students often think equal amounts of hydrogen and oxygen are produced. Because a water molecule H₂O contains hydrogen and oxygen atoms in a 2:1 ratio, the gases also form in a 2:1 hydrogen-to-oxygen volume ratio.
Students often think a stronger current increases the proportion of hydrogen. A stronger current only makes the gases form faster; the volume ratio stays 2:1.

In this model the Current slider is the current that would flow at 10 % concentration; the actual current is that value scaled by the concentration (e.g. 0.30 A at 5.0 %). Gas volumes are calculated from the charge passed, assuming 25 ℃ and 1 atm, and time runs 6× faster. The model does not show oxygen dissolving slightly in water or the detailed electrode reactions (OH⁻ reacts at the anode, water at the cathode), so mention that in real experiments the oxygen volume often comes out a little less than the 2:1 ratio predicts.
