Zinc in Copper Sulfate: Displacement
Students understand that when a zinc plate is placed in copper sulfate solution, two electrons pass directly from zinc atoms to copper ions at the plate surface, so copper is deposited and zinc ions go into solution (because zinc forms ions more readily than copper), and that the numbers of particles balance.

Predict (before you touch anything)
If you put a zinc plate into blue copper sulfate solution and leave it for a while, what will happen to the surface of the plate and to the color of the solution?💡 水溶液の青色は、どのイオンによる色だっただろうか。 Which ion gives the solution its blue color? Recall which forms ions more easily, zinc or copper.
When one copper ion Cu²⁺ disappears, how many zinc ions Zn²⁺ do you think appear? What happens to the number of sulfate ions SO₄²⁻?💡 それぞれのイオンの電荷(+がいくつか、−がいくつか)に注目しよう。 Look at the charge on each ion (how many + or −). In the solution as a whole, positive and negative charges balance.
Try it
With the default settings (Temperature 25 ℃, Initial Cu²⁺ 300, Zinc plate area 1.0×), the reaction starts automatically. Watch where the red "2e−(Zn→Cu2+)" labels appear on the plate and where the reddish-brown deposited copper builds up. Use "Pause" and "Start" to stop and look when needed.
Every few seconds, record "Cu²⁺ left", "Zn²⁺ formed", "SO₄²⁻" and "Cu deposited" from the readout. Also watch the blueness of the solution and the thickness of the zinc plate.
Wait until the reaction ends. Note the time shown in "Reaction complete: … s (Cu2+ = 0)" and check whether anything keeps reacting afterward.
Set Temperature to 10 ℃ and then 90 ℃, pressing "Reset" each time, and compare the "Time to 100 Cu" and the time until the reaction is complete.
Return Temperature to 25 ℃. Set Zinc plate area to 0.5× and 2.0×, then Initial Cu²⁺ to 100 and 500, and compare the times in the same way (moving these sliders resets the simulation automatically).
Check
Where did the reaction (the electron transfer) happen? Where did the copper collect?→ Cu²⁺が亜鉛板の表面にぶつかった瞬間だけ、その場所に「2e−(Zn→Cu2+)」が表示され反応が起こった。 The reaction happened only at the moment a Cu²⁺ hit the zinc plate surface, where "2e−(Zn→Cu2+)" appeared. Nothing reacted in the bulk of the liquid. The copper formed did not float around; it built up as a reddish-brown layer on the plate surface, and the gray zinc plate became visibly thinner. No wire or battery is involved.
How were the numbers "Cu²⁺ left", "Zn²⁺ formed" and "SO₄²⁻" related?→ 例えば5秒後に残りCu²⁺が107個なら生成Zn²⁺は193個で、合計はいつも初めのCu²⁺の300個になった。 For example, after 5 s, with 107 Cu²⁺ left there were 193 Zn²⁺ formed, and the two always added up to the initial 300 Cu²⁺. Each Cu²⁺ lost meant one Zn²⁺ gained (1:1), and Cu deposited equaled Zn²⁺ formed. SO₄²⁻ stayed at 300 from start to finish.
How did the color of the solution change, and how did the reaction end?→ 残りCu²⁺が減るにつれて水溶液の青色はしだいにうすくなり、Cu²⁺が0個になるとほぼ無色になった。 As Cu²⁺ decreased, the blue color faded steadily, and when Cu²⁺ reached 0 the solution was almost colorless. Then "Cu2+ = 0 → reaction over" appeared; Zn²⁺ and SO₄²⁻ kept moving but no more reaction occurred (roughly 30–40 s at 25 ℃, 300 ions, 1.0×).
How did changing the temperature, the surface area and the initial number of Cu²⁺ affect the reaction rate?→ 「Cu100個析出まで」は、温度10℃で約3秒、25℃で約2秒、90℃で約1秒と、温度が高いほど短くなった(粒子が速く動き、板にぶつかる回数が増える)。 Time to 100 Cu" was about 3 s at 10 ℃, about 2 s at 25 ℃ and about 1 s at 90 ℃: higher temperature made it shorter (particles move faster and hit the plate more often). It was about 4 s at 0.5× area and about 1 s at 2.0×: a larger surface made it shorter. With 500 initial Cu²⁺ it fell to about 1 s. The time to complete the reaction also got shorter with higher temperature or larger area, but with more initial Cu²⁺ there is also more to react, so the completion time barely changed (values vary a little each run).
Think further
If instead you put a copper plate into zinc sulfate solution, no reaction occurs. Zinc forms positive ions more readily than copper. With a zinc plate and copper ions, zinc gives up electrons to become Zn²⁺ and Cu²⁺ takes those electrons to become copper. With a copper plate and zinc ions, copper, which is less ready to form ions, would have to give up electrons, so no reaction occurs.
A Daniell cell also uses zinc, copper and copper sulfate solution. What is different about it that lets us take an electric current from it?→ この実験では、電子は亜鉛板の表面で亜鉛からCu²⁺へ直接渡されるので、電流として外に取り出せない(エネルギーはおもに熱になる)。 Here the electrons pass directly from zinc to Cu²⁺ at the plate surface, so they cannot be taken out as a current (the energy is released mostly as heat). In a Daniell cell the zinc and the copper sulfate solution are separated by a porous barrier (such as cellophane), so the electrons must travel through a wire from the zinc plate to the copper plate, and that flow can be used as a current.
Common misconceptions
Students often think the red material on the zinc plate is the zinc rusting or changing color. It is actually copper formed when Cu²⁺ from the solution gains electrons, while the zinc itself dissolves as Zn²⁺.
Students often think that zinc reacting with copper sulfate automatically produces a current (a battery). When electrons are simply handed over at the zinc surface, no current can be drawn off externally.

In this model every Cu²⁺ that hits the plate surface reacts, water molecules are omitted, and the effect of temperature on particle speed is exaggerated for visibility. Real reaction rates also depend on the condition of the surface and other factors. Because particle motion is random, the times shown vary a little from run to run; for comparisons, repeat a few times or use the "Time to 100 Cu" value.
