Stationary Front Tug-of-War Simulation
Students understand that a stationary front (such as the baiu/rainy-season front) barely moves because the cold and warm air masses are evenly matched; warm air rises slowly along the frontal surface, so rain lasts a long time over a wide area on the north (cold) side; and when one air mass becomes stronger, it pushes the front toward the other side.

Predict (before you touch anything)
Why does rain often continue for many days during the rainy season? Make a prediction, focusing on how the front moves.💡 寒冷前線や温暖前線が通過するときの雨は、ふつうどのくらいの時間で止むだろうか。 How long does rain from a passing cold front or warm front usually last? Compare with that.
If the warm air to the south becomes stronger than the cold air to the north, which way will the front move, and what will happen to the area where it rains?💡 2つの気団が押し合う「綱引き」や「押しずもう」を思いうかべてみよう。Imagine the two air masses in a tug-of-war or a pushing match.
Try it
Keep the default settings (Warm air (south) strength 5, Cold air (north) strength 5) and watch for about 10 seconds. Confirm that left is south and right is north, then look at the tilt of the frontal surface, how the warm-air dots move, where the clouds and rain are, the "Sunny" and "Long-lasting rain" labels in the bottom strip, and the readout "Station ★: raining for … s".
In the bottom strip (the map seen from above), check which way the blue triangles and the red semicircles of the stationary-front symbol point: south or north.
Set Warm air (south) strength to 8 and Cold air (north) strength to 3. Watch how the front and the rain area move, the readouts ("Warm air wins (front moves north)", "Difference +5"), and how the weather at the station ★ changes.
Press "Reset", then set Warm air (south) strength to 2 and Cold air (north) strength to 9, and observe the direction and speed of the front.
Press "Reset" and set both sliders to the same value, 8 and 8 (or 2 and 2), and check whether the front moves.
Check
Which way does the frontal surface slope, and how does the warm air move? Which way do the symbols on the front in the bottom strip point?→ 前線面は北側(寒気側)に向かって高くなるように傾いていて、その下に冷たく重い寒気がくさびのように入りこんでいた。 The frontal surface rises toward the north (the cold side), with cold, heavy air lying beneath it like a wedge. Warm, moist air from the south slowly rides up this gentle slope, cooling as it rises, so clouds form above the area north of the front. In the bottom strip, the stationary-front symbol alternates blue triangles pointing south (toward the warm side) and red semicircles pointing north (toward the cold side).
With strengths 5 and 5, where was it raining? What was the weather at the station ★?→ 雨は地上の前線より北側(寒気側)の広い範囲に降り、南側(暖気側)は晴れていた。 Rain fell over a wide area north of the surface front (the cold side), while the south (warm side) was sunny. Because the front hardly moved, the station ★ north of the front stayed in the rain and the "raining for … s" counter kept increasing.
With warm air 8 and cold air 3, what happened to the front and to the weather at the station ★?→ 「暖気が優勢(前線北上)」と表示され、前線は雲・雨域といっしょに北(右)へ移動した。 Warm air wins (front moves north)" appeared, and the front moved north (to the right) together with its clouds and rain. Once the front passed the station ★, the station was on the warm side and showed "sunny (the rain has stopped)". Within several seconds the front reached the north edge of the screen.
What happened with warm air 2 and cold air 9, and with both set to 8?→ 2と9では「寒気が優勢(前線南下)」「勢力差 -7」となり、前線は南(左)へ、+5のときより速く移動した。 With 2 and 9 the display read "Cold air wins (front moves south)" and "Difference -7", and the front moved south (left), faster than at +5. With 8 and 8 the difference was 0, so it showed "Stationary (rainy season)" and the front hardly moved. What controls the front's motion is not how strong each air mass is, but the difference between them.
Think further
Cold-front rain usually stops quickly, so why does stationary-front rain last so long? Explain using what you saw in the simulation.→ 停滞前線では暖気が緩やかな前線面に沿ってゆっくり上昇するので、北側の広い範囲に層状の雲ができる。 At a stationary front the warm air rises slowly along a gentle frontal surface, forming layered clouds over a wide area to the north. And because the two air masses are balanced, the front barely moves, so the same region stays under those clouds for a long time and the rain continues.
In Japan the rainy season ends when the Pacific high (a warm, moist air mass) to the south strengthens. Which operation in the simulation corresponds to this, and how would the rainy-season front move?→ 「暖気(南側)の勢力」を「寒気(北側)の勢力」より大きくする操作に当たる。 It corresponds to making Warm air (south) strength larger than Cold air (north) strength. The front is pushed north, and places that had continuous rain end up on the warm side and become sunny. That is the end of the rainy season.
Common misconceptions
Students often think stationary-front rain falls right on the front or on the warm side. Clouds form where warm air rides up the frontal surface, above the north (cold) side, so the rain falls widely north of the front.
Students often think the front moves violently if both air masses are strong. What matters is the difference in strength; if they are equal, the front stays put.

The large view is a south–north cross section; the bottom strip is a map view of the ground from above. "Strength" is an arbitrary 0–10 index, and the front simply moves at a speed proportional to the difference (real fronts move according to pressure patterns and upper-level winds). The frontal surface is also drawn much steeper than in reality so it is easy to see; real frontal slopes are only about 1 in a few hundred.
