Life of a Low: How an Occluded Front Forms

Life of a Low: How an Occluded Front Forms 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand the life cycle of a mid-latitude low: the faster cold front catches up with the warm front, the warm sector shrinks and an occluded front forms, and then the low weakens and its central pressure rises.

Predict (before you touch anything)

Which moves faster, the cold front or the warm front of a low? If one catches up with the other, what do you think happens to the warm air between the two fronts (the warm sector)?💡 寒気と暖気では、どちらが重く、地面に沿って入りこみやすいかを思い出そう。Recall which is denser, cold air or warm air, and which can more easily push in along the ground.
In the Northern Hemisphere, which way does the surface wind blow around a low?💡 低気圧の中心は周りより気圧が低い。 The center of a low has lower pressure than its surroundings. Remember that air tends to move from high to low pressure, and recall wind directions you have seen on weather maps.

Try it

Playback starts automatically, so first press "⏸ Pause". Set the Timeline to 10% and record where the warm front (red), cold front (blue) and warm air area (orange) are, which way the wind arrows circle, and the central pressure.
Slowly move the Timeline through 10% → 30% → 45% → 60%, watching how wide the warm air area between the cold and warm fronts is, and when the purple occluded front first appears near the center.
Set the Timeline to 70% and then 95%. Check whether any warm air area is left, how long the occluded front is, and read Stage, Central pressure and Trend at the top and the caption below the map.
Return the Timeline to 20% and toggle "Show rain areas" on and off. Compare on which side of the warm front and the cold front the rain areas (blue hatching) lie, and how wide each one is.
Press "⏮ Restart" and then "▶ Play", and watch the whole life cycle to find when the central pressure stops falling and starts to rise.

Check

Which way did the wind arrows circle? Did they also move toward the center?→ 風は反時計回りに回りながら、少しずつ中心に向かって吹きこんでいた(うず巻き状)。 The wind circled counterclockwise while gradually blowing in toward the center, in a spiral. This is the surface wind pattern of a low in the Northern Hemisphere.
As the Timeline advanced, how did the warm air area and the fronts change?→ 10%では温暖前線が中心の東側、寒冷前線が南側にのびて、その間に暖気の領域が広くあった。 At 10% the warm front extended east of the center and the cold front south of it, with a wide warm air area between them. The cold front swung around faster and closed in on the warm front; from about 40% it caught up near the center and a purple occluded front began to form. The occluded front grew outward, and by about 70% the warm air area had vanished from the ground, leaving only the occluded front.
Where were the rain areas relative to the warm front and the cold front?→ 温暖前線では、前線の前方(進む向きの側、寒気側)に幅広く雨域があった。 For the warm front, a wide rain area lay ahead of the front (on the side it moves toward, the cold-air side). For the cold front, a narrow rain area lay only along the front and behind it (on the cold-air side); there was no rain in the warm air area ahead of it.
How did the central pressure change?→ 0%で1002 hPaから下がり続け、75%ごろに最も低い約972 hPaになった(傾向は「↓ 下降中(発達)」)。 It fell from 1002 hPa at 0% and reached its lowest, about 972 hPa, around 75% (Trend: "↓ Falling (strengthening)"). In Stage 4 it began to rise, reaching about 983 hPa at 95% ("↑ Rising (weakening)"). The lower the pressure, the closer together the isobars were.

Think further

Why does the low weaken after the occluded front forms?→ 低気圧は、暖気が寒気の上へ上昇することで発達する。 A low strengthens as warm air rises over cold air. When it occludes, the warm air at the ground is squeezed between cold air and lifted aloft, so the warm sector at the surface disappears. With that source of rising warm air gone, the low weakens and its central pressure rises.
Compare the time between the passage of the warm front and the passage of the cold front at one place early in the low's life and close to occlusion.→ 初めは暖域が広いので、温暖前線が通ってから寒冷前線が来るまでに時間があり、その間は気温が高く比較的おだやかな天気が続く。 Early on the warm sector is wide, so there is a long gap between the warm front and the cold front, during which it is warmer and the weather is relatively calm. Near occlusion the warm sector is narrow, so the two fronts pass in quick succession and the warm period is short. After occlusion, the occluded front passes without warm air ever reaching the ground.

In this model the center of the low stays fixed in the middle of the screen and the fronts swing counterclockwise around it. Real mid-latitude lows also travel east with the westerlies as they develop, so point this out when comparing with weather maps. The pressure values (1002 hPa → about 972 hPa → about 984 hPa) and the widths of the rain areas are representative choices, not data.
