Neutralization Titration: pH Curve and Heat
Predict (before you touch anything)
If you keep adding alkali to hydrochloric acid at a steady rate, how will the pH change? Will it rise in a straight line at a constant rate, or in some other way? Sketch the shape of the graph you expect.💡 水溶液の中に、まだ中和されずに残っているH⁺がどれくらいあるかを考えよう。 Think about how much H⁺ is still left un-neutralized in the solution. What is different when there is a lot of H⁺ compared with when almost none is left?
Neutralization releases heat. If you keep adding alkali, will the temperature of the liquid keep rising forever?💡 熱が出るのは、H⁺とOH⁻が結びつくときだけである。 Heat is released only when H⁺ and OH⁻ combine. Think about what the solution added after all the H⁺ is gone does to the liquid.
Try it
With the default settings (HCl concentration 0.50 mol/L, NaOH drip rate 1.0 mL/s), dripping starts automatically when the page opens. For the first few seconds, watch the readout (Added, pH, Temp, Liquid) and the color of the beaker. Use "Pause" and "Resume" to stop and read values if needed.
Watch closely as the added volume approaches the dashed line (Equiv. point 25.0 mL). Check how the pH curve, the BTB color and the temperature curve change, and the moment "Neutralized! pH 7" appears.
Let it run to 60 mL (set NaOH drip rate to 3.0 mL/s to save time) and record how the temperature changes after the equivalence point and the final pH.
Press "Reset", set HCl concentration to 1.00 mol/L, and press "Start". Record the position of the equivalence-point line and the highest temperature.
Press "Reset" again, set HCl concentration to 0.10 mol/L, press "Start", and record the equivalence-point position and the highest temperature in the same way. Compare the three runs.
Check
What shape did the pH graph have? What was the pH at the equivalence point?→ 最初はpH 0.3ほどで、滴下してもゆっくりとしか上がらない(20 mLでもpH 1.3程度)。 It starts at about pH 0.3 and rises only slowly (still only about pH 1.3 at 20 mL). Near the equivalence point at 25.0 mL it shoots up almost vertically, passing exactly through pH 7 (the green dot), and then levels off around pH 12–13. It is an S-shaped curve, not a straight line.
How did the temperature change? Where was it highest?→ 液温は20 ℃から上がり続け、当量点(25.0 mL)でいちばん高い約23.4 ℃になった。 The temperature rose steadily from 20 ℃ and was highest, about 23.4 ℃, at the equivalence point (25.0 mL). After that it began to fall, reaching about 22.0 ℃ (+2.0) at 60 mL.
How did the color of the BTB solution change?→ 当量点の手前までは黄色(酸性)のままで、当量点を過ぎると青色(アルカリ性)になった。 It stayed yellow (acidic) until just before the equivalence point and turned blue (alkaline) after it. Green (near neutral) appears only between pH 6.0 and 7.6, and that range spans a tiny volume right at the equivalence point, so the beaker seems to switch from yellow to blue almost instantly. The "BTB color" bar at the top shows that the color actually shifts gradually from yellow through green to blue as the pH changes.
When you changed the HCl concentration, how did the equivalence point and the highest temperature change?→ 0.10 mol/Lでは当量点は5.0 mL、0.50 mol/Lでは25.0 mL、1.00 mol/Lでは50.0 mLになり、濃度に比例して当量点が右へ移った。 The equivalence point was 5.0 mL at 0.10 mol/L, 25.0 mL at 0.50 mol/L and 50.0 mL at 1.00 mol/L; it moved right in proportion to the concentration. The highest temperature was about 21.1 ℃ at 0.10 mol/L, about 23.4 ℃ at 0.50 mol/L and about 24.6 ℃ at 1.00 mol/L, so the more concentrated the acid, the higher it got.
Think further
Why does the temperature fall after the equivalence point even though sodium hydroxide solution is still being added?→ 当量点で塩酸のH⁺はすべてOH⁻と結びついて水になったので、それ以上加えても中和は起こらず、新しく熱は出ない。 At the equivalence point all the H⁺ from the acid has combined with OH⁻ to form water, so adding more causes no further neutralization and releases no new heat. Room-temperature (20 ℃) solution keeps being added, so the same amount of heat is shared by more liquid and the temperature gradually approaches room temperature.
Why does doubling the HCl concentration double the volume needed to reach the equivalence point? Explain using the numbers of ions.→ H⁺とOH⁻は1個ずつ結びついて水になる。 H⁺ and OH⁻ combine one to one to form water. With the acid volume fixed at 25 mL, doubling its concentration doubles the number of H⁺ ions in the beaker. Since the NaOH solution added has the same concentration (0.50 mol/L), twice the volume is needed to supply the same number of OH⁻ ions.
Common misconceptions
Students often think the pH rises steadily in proportion to the amount of alkali added. In fact it barely changes while plenty of H⁺ remains, then changes sharply with a tiny addition around the equivalence point.
Students often think that the more alkali you add, the more reaction happens and the hotter the liquid gets. Heat is released only while neutralization is occurring; beyond the equivalence point the temperature falls.

The pH is recalculated from the balance of acid and base each frame, and because both are strong, the equivalence point is exactly pH 7. The temperature model includes only the heat of neutralization and ignores heat loss to the surroundings and differences in heat capacity or density, so in a real experiment the maximum is lower and the liquid cools toward room temperature over time. Because pH 6.0–7.6 occurs only extremely close to the equivalence point, green is barely visible in the beaker; link this to how a single drop changes the color in a real titration.
