Electrolysis of Copper Chloride Solution

中3 · 化学単元: イオンと電池(ダニエル電池)Electrolysis of Copper Chloride Solution 目安 15分about 15 min
Students understand that in the electrolysis of copper(II) chloride solution the positive Cu²⁺ ions are attracted to the cathode (− electrode) and deposited as copper, the negative Cl⁻ ions are attracted to the anode (+ electrode) and become chlorine gas, and that electrons flow in the wires while ions move in the solution.

Predict (before you touch anything)

When the power is connected, which electrode, + or −, do you think Cu²⁺ and Cl⁻ will each move toward?💡 +と−の電気は引き合い、同じ種類の電気はしりぞけ合います。Opposite charges attract each other, and like charges repel.
If the + and − of the power supply are swapped, what do you think will happen to which electrode gets copper and which gives off gas?💡 電極の位置ではなく、その電極が電源のどちらの極につながっているかに注目しましょう。Focus not on where each electrode is, but on which terminal of the power supply it is connected to.

Try it

In the starting state (Voltage 3.0 V, Concentration 3 / 6), watch which electrode the blue Cu²⁺ (2+) and the yellow-green Cl⁻ (−) move toward. Also look for the copper-colored layer on the Cathode (−), the yellow-green bubbles from the Anode (+), and the e⁻ particles on the wires.
Set "Voltage" to 0.0 V. Check what happens to the ion motion, the deposit and the bubbles, and confirm the top display shows "No current: random motion (no reaction)".
Set "Voltage" to 6.0 V and "Concentration" to 6 / 6. Compare with 3.0 V: how fast the ions move, how fast copper is deposited and bubbles appear, and how quickly the "Cu deposited", "Cl₂" and "e⁻" counts at the top increase.
Press "Reverse polarity (swap + / −)" and confirm that the Cathode/Anode labels switch, along with which electrode gets copper and which gives off bubbles.

Check

Which electrode did Cu²⁺ and Cl⁻ each move toward, and what happened there?→ Cu²⁺ は陰極(−極)へ動き、電子を受け取って赤銅色の銅として電極に積もった。 Cu²⁺ moved to the cathode (− electrode), gained electrons and built up on it as reddish copper. Cl⁻ moved to the anode (+ electrode), gave up electrons and rose as yellow-green bubbles of chlorine gas.
What happened to the ions when the voltage was set to 0.0 V?→ イオンは特定の向きに進まず、ゆらゆらとランダムに動くだけになり、銅の析出も気泡の発生も止まった。The ions no longer moved in any particular direction; they just drifted randomly, and both copper deposition and bubbling stopped.
What changed when the voltage or the concentration was increased?→ 電圧を大きくするとイオンが電極へ速く移動し、析出と気泡の発生が速くなった。 Raising the voltage made the ions move to the electrodes faster, so copper deposited and bubbles formed faster. Raising the concentration increased the numbers of Cu²⁺ and Cl⁻ in the same ratio (Cu²⁺ 12 and Cl⁻ 24 at 3 / 6; 24 and 48 at 6 / 6).
In the display at the top, what was the relationship between the numbers of Cu deposited, Cl₂ and e⁻?→ e⁻ の数は析出 Cu の数のおよそ 2 倍で、Cl₂ の数は析出 Cu の数とほぼ同じだった(例:Cu 23、Cl₂ 23、e⁻ 46)。 The e⁻ count was about twice the Cu deposited, and Cl₂ was about equal to Cu deposited (for example Cu 23, Cl₂ 23, e⁻ 46). This is because one Cu²⁺ takes 2 electrons, and two Cl⁻ give up 2 electrons to form one Cl₂.

Think further

Write the overall chemical equation for the electrolysis of copper chloride. Why do you think carbon is used for the electrodes?→ CuCl₂ → Cu + Cl₂(陰極:Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻ → Cu、陽極:2Cl⁻ → Cl₂ + 2e⁻)。 CuCl₂ → Cu + Cl₂ (cathode: Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻ → Cu; anode: 2Cl⁻ → Cl₂ + 2e⁻). Carbon conducts electricity but hardly reacts with chlorine or the solution, so the electrode itself does not dissolve or react and the products can be studied clearly.

In this model the number of ions in the solution is kept constant, so it does not show the blue color fading as Cu²⁺ is used up. Reversing the polarity resets the deposit and bubble counts, and the copper on the former cathode is not shown dissolving. The bubbles are drawn yellow-green for clarity; remind students that chlorine is toxic and good ventilation is needed in real experiments.
