Ion Model Neutralization Simulator

Students understand that in neutralization H⁺ from the acid and OH⁻ from the alkali join to form water (H₂O) while Na⁺ and Cl⁻ stay in the solution as ions, that the solution becomes neutral (pH 7) when the numbers of H⁺ and OH⁻ added are equal, and that the volume of sodium hydroxide solution needed is proportional to the concentration of the hydrochloric acid.

Predict (before you touch anything)

As sodium hydroxide solution is added to hydrochloric acid, what do you think happens to the Na⁺ and Cl⁻ ions in the solution?💡 食塩(塩化ナトリウム)を水に溶かしたとき、水の中ではどのような粒子になっているかを思い出しましょう。Recall what particles are present when table salt (sodium chloride) is dissolved in water.
If sodium hydroxide solution is added at a steady rate, do you think the pH will rise steadily little by little?💡 液中に残っている H⁺ の数が最後の数個になったときを想像してみましょう。Imagine the moment when only the last few H⁺ ions are left in the solution.

Try it

In the starting state (NaOH added 0.0 mL, HCl conc. 0.50 mol/L), record the particles in the beaker, the counts of H+, OH-, Na+, Cl- and H2O, the pH and the BTB color.
Press "Add" and let it drip for a few seconds. Watch OH- that falls in meet H+ and turn into H2O. Press "Stop" and check how the counts changed.
Move the "NaOH added" slider to 20.0, 24.5, 25.0, 25.5 and 30.0 mL. At each value record the pH, BTB color, particle counts and the point on the neutralization curve.
Change "HCl conc." to 0.20 mol/L and 1.00 mol/L, and check how the "Neutralization point: NaOH ... mL" value and the position of the steep rise on the neutralization curve change.

Check

As NaOH solution was added, what happened to the numbers of Na⁺ and Cl⁻?→ Cl⁻ は 15 個のまま変わらず、Na⁺ は加えた分だけ増えた(25.0 mL で 15 個)。 Cl⁻ stayed at 15 and Na⁺ increased with each addition (15 at 25.0 mL). Neither was used up, and they did not join to form NaCl; both stayed in the solution as ions.
At 0.50 mol/L, after how many mL did both H⁺ and OH⁻ become 0 and the pH reach 7? How many H2O were there then?→ 25.0 mL のとき。 At 25.0 mL. The BTB turned green (neutral), and there were 15 H2O, the same as the starting number of H⁺.
How did the pH change around the neutralization point?→ 20.0 mL It rose slowly: about 1.3 at 20.0 mL and still only about 2.3 at 24.5 mL, then jumped to 7.00 at 25.0 mL and about 11.7 at 25.5 mL. BTB changed from yellow to green to blue. After the neutralization point, OH⁻ began to remain in the solution.
How did the neutralization point change when the HCl concentration was changed?→ 0.20 mol/L It was 10.0 mL at 0.20 mol/L, 25.0 mL at 0.50 mol/L and 50.0 mL at 1.00 mol/L, proportional to the acid concentration. The starting number of H⁺ (6, 15, 30) was also proportional to the concentration.

Think further

What would you get if you evaporated the liquid in the beaker at the neutralization point? Is the liquid at that point the same as pure water?→ 液中に残っている Na⁺ と Cl⁻ が結びついて塩化ナトリウム(塩)の結晶が得られる。 The Na⁺ and Cl⁻ left in the solution would combine to form crystals of sodium chloride (a salt). The liquid is neutral, but it is a sodium chloride solution with Na⁺ and Cl⁻ dissolved in it, so it is not pure water.
Why does the pH change so suddenly near the neutralization point?→ pH pH depends on the concentration of H⁺ (or OH⁻). While there is a lot of H⁺, removing some barely changes the pH. Once the last H⁺ is gone, any OH⁻ added simply remains, so a tiny extra amount switches the solution from acidic to alkaline.

The setup is 25 mL of hydrochloric acid with 0.50 mol/L sodium hydroxide solution added, and the pH is calculated from the real titration formula (ignoring water's own ionization and temperature). The particle count is a representative model (concentration × 30) and is rounded, so 1 H⁺ still appears just before the neutralization point. BTB is shown yellow below pH 6.0, green up to pH 7.6, and blue above that.
